Summary

Description
English: Kirkhaugh footbridge The Upper South Tyne passes under this footbridge at Kirkhaugh, carrying pedestrians from the station and village on the left bank, to the church on the right bank. From a paddler's viewpoint, the bridge currently presents a significant hazard in the form of a strainer. A tree has fallen from the left bank into the river, and top branches are caught on the bridge pier nearest the left. At the fairly low level shown, the tree is easily visible and canoeists steer well clear, but at higher levels the tree will become less visible. A powerful undertow forms in such situations and a kayak unfortunate enough to be caught will be capsized and its occupant swept under the tree. The obvious risk is that he will be unable to exit the boat, or will exit only to become caught in the branches underwater.
