User:Drmies submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:
:I nominate Hafspajen as Editor of the Week for being an all-around nice guy and content creator. Hafspajen is actually a returning editor--they used to be Warrington--and has created and worked on tons of nice big and silly little articles, including a couple of DYKs. We've collaborated on quite a few of them, and The Sand-Covered Church was especially neat. Hafspajen thinks his English and his referencing skills are not up to snuff and I think he's bothered by this sometimes, but what he thinks he lacks he makes up for with his usual enthusiasm. He really loves the place and its potential, and I'm sure Editors Yngvadottir and Sagaciousphil agree that he deserves some recognition. And did I mention he loves dogs and protects them and their articles? And leaves sweet and appropriate images on images to make people feel better if they're down? He's a gem. DYK credits

Hi Hafspajen, I credited you, Yngvadottir and Eric on the DYK for Gingerbread house - you can see the actual nomination here. SuggestBot seems to have done odd things to your talk page - the background is all grey starting from a section higher up? SagaciousPhil - Chat 17:10, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for fixing that, Gareth - it was making my eyes go all funny! SagaciousPhil - Chat 18:46, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, I thank you for pointing it out. Much better now — do hope our kind host approves ..(!).. Cheers! — | Gareth Griffith-Jones |The WelshBuzzard| — 18:51, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Gingerbread house

Harrias talk 00:02, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Psst, it got over 5,000 views; add it to DYKSTATS! Yngvadottir (talk) 16:17, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
' Oh nice, Yngvadottir. I was wondering a bit, I don't think that it stayed as DYK even the whole 24 hours, it was changed pretty rapidly. Hafspajen (talk) 16:24, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
They change the DYKs every 8 or 12 hours, I'm not sure which these days. Yngvadottir (talk) 16:41, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Really? Sometimes they are there for a whole day. Hafspajen (talk) 16:45, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) x 2!!!! Maybe the very kind and ever so efficient/helpful Yngvadottir could add it to the stats, as it takes me hours to work out how to do it (and I think I get the figures wrong half the time! ) By the way, Hafspajen, it was up for 12 hours (from midnight until noon, UK time) - it depends on what time cycle is set at DYK, occasionally it's only eight hours. SagaciousPhil - Chat 16:47, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've added it to the December stats [1] SagaciousPhil - Chat 17:48, 28 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats on the Gingerbread house DYK - perfect timing

Perfect timing. I made two contributions

  • I uploaded the new video of the making of the 2013 White House Gingerbread House. Much better than that Nixon stuff!
  • I packed the galleries (mode=packed) same space taken up, but white borders eliminated, the pix appear much larger. This might take some getting used to, but is definitely better IMHO. Feel free to revert this, but, please take a minute to decide first.

Again congrats! Smallbones(smalltalk) 04:52, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks, Smallbones. Love that White house action picture. Much better than that Nixon stuff! About the galleries - Well As I tell everybody - uneven galleries gives me the creeps. Can't you do it so they are displaced evenly? Hafspajen (talk) 12:28, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I don't think we can control whether the galleries come out even or uneven, either with packed mode or without it. It all depends on the reader's settings as far as the width of his/her screen and maybe the size of the type they've selected. You can set this so that your screen comes out even, but that's just one reader. I might check after the holidays with the tech folks at WMF if there is some workaround, but I'd guess it's not easy. Congrats again - it looks beautiful (at least on my screen)! Smallbones(smalltalk) 14:48, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to please you. If it depends on the reader's settings as far as the width of his/her screen - there sould be a solution for this, no? I am using full screen. At this moment on my screen Gingerbread houses gallery and the Other shapes gallery is twice as big as the Historical gingerbread shaping moulds gallery. The Merry-go-round in gingerbread - picture stans alone as a single picture in a third row, an all the pictures in the Gingerbread houses gallery and the Other shapes gallery are of different sizes. I don't know how it looks like on yours. Don't know how other editors experience my work, and this makes me a bit confused. Hafspajen (talk) 15:02, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Hafspajen, I hope you're having a great Christmas! You can be very proud of the Gingerbread house article - it looks really good. Just to say that the galleries look entirely different on my MacBook than on my iPad, so the screens etc do make a difference. I love the image of the White House made from gingerbread! Now it's time for me to have some beetroot soup before finishing cooking - everyone is waiting and I don't think "but I'm complimenting my friend" will be a good excuse for a burnt Christmas dinner! SagaciousPhil - Chat 15:15, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks! it was great enough. Now that would be a terrible thing (burnt Christmas dinner)! But the Gingerbread houses wouldn't been there where they were (tonight - I may say) - without YOU. You have to tell me how does it looks on your MacBook and on your iPad, when you have some spare time! This confuses me a geat deal, how am I suppose to know how my work look like everywhere. Hafspajen (talk) 15:34, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This might fit in one of your galleries above. It might also cheer you up a bit. Can you find a painting of "Verifiability?"

Your work looks different everywhere! BTW, I increased the size (height) of the gingerbread molds so that they appear bigger compared to the others. The heights were set the same, but since the widths of the molds was narrower, the overall pix were smaller (and even "appeared" shorter). Here's an exercise for you to get an idea of what happens when you change one of your settings. I'm on a MacBook Pro notebook, and this will all look different if you are on a different machine. Get out of fullscreen so that you can change the width of the browser window manually. Look at the galleries and change the width in and out. See how the galleries jump around. Well there are an esesentially infinite number of people on a very large number of different types of computers with maybe a dozen different settings each that they can set. Somebody will be viewing the article as you saw it at each step of the in-and-out exercise. Now change the zoom setting to 125% from 100% .... Hope this helps All of this relative display stuff is a built-in design choice of the wiki software, and to a large extent to HTML in general. Smallbones(smalltalk) 16:17, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • This sounds like a serious problem to me. Isn't any way of making articles the same way everywhere? We had this problem raised once with one computer programing guy, but I am not sure that anything happened. YOu should try to look on the fullscteen. I say that the galleries looked better the first version on full screen. But the real problem is that it looks like there is no way to make everybody happy - and that people editing on one screen have no idea how it looks like for the others - and this sounds really distressing. Do you follow me? Hafspajen (talk) 16:55, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I follow and felt much the same way when I figured this out. Remember back when certain websites would say "this site appears better when using Internet Explorer"? I think they were right IF you were using the standard windows machine, with the standard settings, in the standard way they expect you to use it. But, these days there is no standard computer, no standard browser, no real standard settings, and people don't compute/browse in any standard ways. I believe that the relative display biases built into html and the wiki software isjust an acknowledgement of this. Suppose we set everything here to appear perfect on the MacBookPro with a Chrome browser, everything on the default settings. Now a new supermachine comes along (takes great photos and movies while talking on the phone and having a video meeting at the same time you browse on the internet and search a database and tricords) - its settings will change the displays and we'd have to rework everything when everybody adopts it. BTW, you can rejigger many of your settings in Wikipedia via the preferences tab. Now I'm not sure I'd want to change the situation, and don't know how to change it. Smallbones(smalltalk) 17:30, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • And look Gingerbread house was viewed over 5,000 times yesterday! –––> [2] I'll re-check the figures tomorrow morning and then add it to the DYK stats for you - probably with all different screen sizes? SagaciousPhil - Chat 09:26, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
' Nice. How many is the necessary for thr DYK-Hall of fame? The perfect timing is Sagaciousphil nomination, by the way... Hafspajen (talk) 12:52, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
At least 25,000, so it won't make it into that I'm afraid! Have you ever thought about archiving some of your talk page? It's lovely with all your pictures but getting very, very long - I will get repetitive strain injury when scrolling down it soon . When you look at my talk page, does the 'Morning Sagaciousphil' under the archive box change? I've been trying to get it to alter so it shows the name of whoever is looking at it. I've tried using the templates Current user and Revisionuser but I don't know if they are working or if I've even done it right! SagaciousPhil - Chat 13:30, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

After all that work, I'm going to make it longer again!

Sagaciousphil has hugged you! Hugs promote WikiLove and hopefully this one has made your day better (and hopefully wasn't meant as an invasion of personal space). Spread the WikiLove by hugging at someone else, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past or a good friend. Happy editing!
Hug others by adding to their talk page with a friendly message.

I have seen some — but this is crazy. This guy whose username is Unreal7, really is "unreal". He replies to bots, but not to other editors:[6] — | Gareth Griffith-Jones |The WelshBuzzard| — 23:58, 31 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Slept in the knife drawer the night before? That was funny!! (and probably really obekväm = uncomfortable and unpleasant), but sharp! Hafspajen (talk) 12:59, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The Norwegian Godt Nyttår is very similar. — | Gareth Griffith-Jones |The WelshBuzzard| — 14:40, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well, Gareth, you know, if you can talk Swedish, you actually do understand the Norwegian - and even the Danish, though their language (the Danish) is slightly more difficult for a Swede due to their custom to talk as they had their mouth full of cheese and they swallow half of their words, so one is just kind of guessing what they meant. All are probably some different dialects of the Old Norse – the old Viking language! Hafspajen (talk) 16:48, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
During World War II my father (a commissioned officer – a regular) spent the latter part of the six years war in occupied Norway rounding-up the Germans.
I was only three at the time, but later he told me how quickly he was able to converse in Norwegian. — | Gareth Griffith-Jones |The WelshBuzzard| — 19:41, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes, it makes sense. I notice myself that the English sometimes has quite similar words to Swedish and Norwegian words. Could be the reason why your father had such succes learning Norwegian (but he was probably talented at languages - and people from Wales are multilingual from the begining, no?). Rounding-up the Germans was surely a blessing for the poor Norwegians, they actually had concentration camps. Not so pleasant stories are told about the occupation. Hafspajen (talk) 23:00, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It was a bad time in their history. At the end of it, my father shook hands with both Haakon VII, the King of Norway, and their Prime Minister.
During the German occupation of World War II the King was an important symbol of national unity and resistance. His steadfast opposition to the German demands of surrender was important for the fighting spirit of the Norwegian population. The constitutional powers granted to the King in the Norwegian monarchial system made his position very important and enabled the government in exile to continue its work with the utmost legitimacy.
After the war the Norwegian royal house succeeded in maintaining a balance between regality and approachability. King Olav V was deemed the people's king and the spontaneous show of mourning from the population upon his death in 1991 demonstrated the high standing he had among the Norwegian people. Even republicans were among the masses lighting candles in front of the Palace.[1]
— | Gareth Griffith-Jones |The WelshBuzzard| — 22:03, 2 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hey!! I want to shake hands with the Norvegian king too!! What am I suppose to do to come this far? Hafspajen (talk) 22:28, 2 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I guess "knocking off" a number of German tourists visiting Scandinavia would not be too good an idea now that we are supposed to be "All together now, boys ethnic groups in Europe". — | Gareth Griffith-Jones |The WelshBuzzard| — 23:46, 2 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Both of them, Warrington. No: I see it now, it's the talk page. Right now I'm editing just a section, and it's fine. Would you like me to archive some for you? Or you can do it yourself--what I do is create User talk:Warrington/Archive 1, and then cut and paste the content I want moved. Advantage is, it's easy. Disadvantage, the archive doesn't have a history, but all of that is preserved in the history of the talk page. Drmies (talk) 22:28, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You were complaining that the pics were too big, while nobody could see them. Now you can, as you say, see them both. Weird. What shall we do? We Welsh have mystic powers.
It is true there are two sets; when you choose to edit, you see one set, then two, then just the second. Now look at the scroll bar. Therefore, when editing and then hitting Preview you cannot see the section you are editing without having to scroll down.
Maybe lose the Rotating Welcome sign (?) it is all over the talk pages so is not really original. Hope this helps. — | Gareth Griffith-Jones |The WelshBuzzard| — 23:43, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Maybe you shouldn't get irritated over such small things, there are other things that are far more irritating, like this, -> just hate people doing this. Are you able to help finding refrences for the content deleted? I put the sections back and now I am trying to find some resources books or what not, from where I can put in some references in the different sections. The Celebration of Boxing Day for example was removed, before and it needs some refs. Hafspajen (talk) 12:54, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Gareth - is the preview/page still very long when you try to edit it, Gareth? I think it's a combination of Hafs talk page being fairly long anyway (although he has reduced it but then SuggestBot came along and added even more to it ). When I look at it in edit mode, three pictures are in a row, then the final one moves down - perhaps if they were made just a tiny smidgeon smaller they would all fit in one row? Are the images in my edit notice too big as well? I'm not very good at image sizing and usually have to rely on Hafspajen to do that! PS:I've just previewed this comment and it doesn't seem to have duplicated the edit notice this time? SagaciousPhil - Chat 13:54, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well, sometimes I do and sometimes I don't, it happens that I edit the same article ten times and I don't remember to put one. But if you ask why I removed this picture, it was not a very good picture, so it was the reason why. Saw you put that back. Saw that you are the artist who created it too. Why I think is not a very good picture is because the composition is kind of dislocated, the picture show the legs or boots just as much as the two dogs, the puppy is way too small that one should be able to see it well, the Labradoodle in the picture is depicted from the rear, but the tail is off, is cut off out of the picture. The composition is very unbalanced, the left side is almost empty, while the right side is dominated by the Labradoodle’s back and the woman’s boots and skirt, and it does not show much of the dog’s characteristic features, so actually I think you should try to take a better picture to put into the article. There is a conflict of interest when promoting one’s own pictures. Even if I do understand the creator’s feelings for liking their own pictures, it’s not a good enough reason. Hafspajen (talk) 19:40, 11 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I've just removed the image from the article as it does not add anything because neither of the dogs can be seen properly. PS - I thought we were now in 2014 (see the heading for this section ). SagaciousPhil - Chat 20:09, 11 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Lady

Leda

Hey Hafspajen, I'm not saying this is the best, or even a usable source, but this was the first thing I found about Leda's being raped, not seduced, by Zeus: [9]. LadyofShalott 01:32, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well, yes it says in Yeats version. In many versions of the story, Zeus merely seduces Leda. This is definitely not the case in Yeats's graphic version. In the Greek mytology it is seduction, but as you say, Yeats may have his own version. But then it has to be precise meaning, in Yeats version, this and this poem. But, as a final thing, this doesn't sounds like a real rape to me. [10]Hafspajen (talk) 03:23, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for adding the pics into the draft for me, Hafspajen, it's very much appreciated! I've a long way to go on it yet but I've managed to find plenty of refs to use. I'm just hoping that once the weather improves - it's a bit wet and miserable today - I'll then be able to get some pictures of the mausoleum, which is in some woodland a little distance from the main house and up a rather rough muddy track. La maja desnuda

The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it.

I wish you would stop doing this stuff! The correct Spanish title is La maja desnuda. Why on earth use a title half-capitalized by Spanish rules and half by English ones? Please research these things more carefully & ask on the talk page first. Johnbod (talk) 16:42, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well put that back than. But Maja is a name. The girls name. Hafspajen (talk) 16:46, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No it isn't! See Majo, of which it is the feminine form. Johnbod (talk) 16:48, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • All English art books use Maja naked, (known in English as The Nude Maja or sometimes The Naked Maja). I think instead of fuming try to explain this in the article, because it is obviously a problem. It is obviously a issue, AND it is NOT explained in the lead. Hafspajen (talk) 16:52, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Added explanation. Hafspajen (talk) 17:10, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And I have to ask, Johnbod, if we shouldn't have some kind of solution here, because the The Clothed Maja has an English title, while La maja desnuda Spanish. We should have them either both English, or both Spanish. (Spanish with the proper explanation). Hafspajen (talk) 17:17, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed - in the large Category:Paintings by Francisco Goya, this now the only one in Spanish, though it is one more often referred to by the Spanish title in WP:RS. I'm dubious that these titles go back to Goya anyway. The Prado English Guide uses "The Naked Maja". But it should be done properly with a WP:RM. Johnbod (talk) 17:34, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Telling you it is confusing. Hafspajen (talk) 17:35, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not confused! Actually there is a good case for merging the two, which have been together since the 2nd was painted. It's no surprize that the Naked gets about 15 times more views that the Clothed. Johnbod (talk) 17:45, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Good for you if you are not confused. Yes, I always thought that it is weird that the two pictures are not in the same article.Hafspajen (talk) 18:12, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Monastery

Hafspajen, you've been around for a while. You should know that you can't simply carve a bit off the lead and shove it in front of the etymology. Where present, the etymology goes first in the main. You have to find the right place for the cut'n'paste, and give it an appropriate heading that reflects the info that's in the new section. If you don't know what to do with it, then leave a request on the talk page. Amandajm (talk) 23:39, 18 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Do you want me do something with that or you mean I have done something with it? Hafspajen (talk) 23:46, 18 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like you fixed that yourself. The lead WAS to long indeed, and now is not. And you came to tell me I was wrong, like to tell to people how they should behave, right? You think that people will appreciate it. Hafspajen (talk) 00:09, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I fixed it. But it really was alright where it was. It was a little long, but was still general stuff that applied to all monasteries.
The reason that I left you a message was to encourage you to think more carefully about the placement of a cut and paste in the future. The order in which material is arranged is important to the article. Because there is a clear division into lead and body-text, the beginning of the main text needs to start in the right way, not just as a continuation of the lead.
A simple follow-on works OK in very short articles about a single object, but not in an article that covers 1) a wide definition 2) the whole world 3) a big time span 4) lots of cultures.
Amandajm (talk) 05:25, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well you probably thought I needed encouraging. But where is that rule about Where present, the etymology goes first in the main. I was really looking for it everywhere and went on and on at the Manual of Style, and nothing. Hafspajen (talk) 11:42, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hafspajen, I haven't quoted "Manual of style" at you. You are right. It probably is not in the manual of style. The manual of style doesn't tell you everything. The manual of style doesn't tell you how to think. This is about looking, reading, and thinking about the best place for information to go. Common sense tells you that definitions go before more general stuff..... that is the reason why articles that included definitions always have them first in the main section. Most people don't need to have it explained to them. Amandajm (talk) 13:59, 21 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
In that case I think that sometimes the general information is more important that the etymology, unless there is some special need for knowing something urgently about it, Amandajm. We had a very pushy editor in the past who tried to put etymology as the most important thing in the world everywhere and that give me some aversion against it too. He also tried to convince people that most words had a Romanian origin, while they were actually Latin. He got himself blocked indefinitly finally. That description doesn't really go with the images of one of the best PBGV's I've seen. A four-leaf clover was consistently believed to be a lucky charm. This very old Irish verse describes why:

Four leaf cloverOne leaf is for fame,
And one leaf is for wealth,
And one is for a faithful lover,
And one to bring you glorious health,
Are all in the four-leaved clover.[2]

A point

It has been more than 300 years that Voltaire said any of those quotes, and to this day, there is not even 1 reliable source that backs them. Regarding the quotes, that we are discussing on Voltaire's page. The ones about Islam. Bladesmulti (talk) 16:15, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well, anything Voltaire said is about 250 years. Hafspajen (talk) 16:18, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Again, point was. That it has been over 250-300 years that he lived/died. Surely, there should be multiple reliable sources for attributing anything that he has said. And if we can't gather, that means the information is wrong or irrelevant for adding here? That's it. Bladesmulti (talk) 16:21, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
'That quote was from A Philosophical Dictionary, Volym 1, written by Voltaire, by his own hands. Entry, muslims - or something like that. I can't see any problem with that source. Hafspajen (talk) 16:25, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Talking about the quotes that are appearing on the section at this moment, and by other users, not yours, yours got thousands of sources. Bladesmulti (talk) 16:29, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You got a point on that. I think that usourced might be removed, but - really, this is just absurd. User:Sitush might be a solution..+ Ask for a comment. Hafspajen (talk) 16:35, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sarah Siddons article change of portrait

Hi, Hafspajen. I'm wondering why you came to the decision that the Mrs Sarah Siddons - WGA8419.jpg at 124 KB is a better pic than Thomas Gainsborough 015.jpg 189 KB. For the sake of 65 KB, the image file used earlier is actually a better reproduction and is larger and more detailed at full resolution. The image you've replaced it with has basically only had the contrast lifted, brightening bolder colours which aren't prominent in the actual original, and has lost softer detail characteristic of Gainsborough's Rococo-influenced style.

If you're keen on your replacement, I'm fine with keeping it... but it isn't actually an improvement. Cheers! --Iryna Harpy (talk) 03:00, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well you got a point on that one, more detailed at full resolution. My reason was only clearer colours, at the very size it is presented in the infobox. That infobox is making it too small, or is there any way of increasing the px? Maybe it should be in the article? Hafspajen (talk) 03:04, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I'll take a look at at all of the convolutions on infobox parameters and see what I can come up with. There isn't any intuitive way in which to address it except in the body of an article. I'll let you know whether there's an easy method of doing this. I'm sure it'd come in handy for both of us for future reference. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 03:24, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Illustration beats explanation. Western Engraving & Colortype Co.
Right, do that. Where are those good old days when the lead picture was quite OK at 300px... ( see Manual of style)? Hafspajen (talk) 03:26, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I really don't know what the thinking behind it is. Galleries as separate from Wiki Commons galleries, as well as enormous, irrelevant and gratuitous image usage proliferates articles and no one seems to care about how byte-heavy 10 views of the same building or oversized pics of supermodels are... but there's something 'wrong' about a reasonably sized image for an infobox. Nice to know I'm not a lone wolf howling at the moon. Obviously, being able to recognise the subject of an article isn't as important as a pic per 1 sentence sections. Maybe it's an exercise in making stubs look like articles. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 03:52, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
'Welll... I like images, especially in the art articles. It is wery difficult to explain a painting, much easier to show. Let's take Monsieur du Vaucel, for example. File:Monsieur du Vaucel.jpg Shall I say, Monsieur du Vaucel looks like a pear, with long white wavy wig? Much better to show Monsieur du Vaucel. But Some galleries are to much. White is an article that it just go mad with image galleries, for example. Hafspajen (talk) 04:06, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I certainly have no objection to galleries and pics in sections where they are relevant. I do get infuriated when they are essentially nationalistic propaganda (which is how I define 'gratuitous'). Sadly, I haven't found any information regarding resizing images slightly for infoboxes. I've tried the usual tweaks which only increase the size of the box, even though they target the image. I might take it to the Village pump and hope to get a sympathetic ear as I've noticed a few others have been querying the same thing since the end of December/early January. Something to do with the 'agile programming' for VE??? I'll keep you in the loop. Cheers! --Iryna Harpy (talk) 04:35, 30 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I hope too, Iryna Harpy, that you get a sympathetic ear ... put me on that list for those who has problems with it too. After all, if you say - lead images are quite alright at 300px (and most images in the lead are usally big) - then why make userboxes where the image is impossible to adjust and is even smaller than thumb size? Roslin

OK I am about done for now (and headed for bed for a couple of hours).

  • I commented out the bit about the Vienna and Florence Art Societies; I could not find that in any of the sources. If it's in the Handlexikon, that would be lovely ... if not, please see if you can track it down.
  • I left the bit about his use of colours changing, but there is no source for that either that I can find. Can you find one? Yes, that was the one about this: but could also paint psychologically incisive portraits is in here. [21].
  • I cannot see Märta Holkers' book in GoogleBooks, and I haven't found anyone else citing her on Roslin either. A page number or two would be great, especially on the bit about psychological insight; the group of pages on which she writes about him would be better than nothing.
  • Well some of the article is a translation from the Swedish Wiki, it's their refs.
Keep working on my museum - in Honor of Crisco Ad honorem Crisco
  • The *ahem* (that's a cough in English) hook speaks of a lost painting, but the detail that it is lost is not in any source that I can find - and not in the article. Can you track down where you read that and add the point?
    • Try, but I think it may be the one that burned up a giant picture is named in Nationalencyklopedin.

Apologies for the big changes. I found the referencing had not kept up with the changes in the content. You will see I've added some additional titbits of information. Yngvadottir (talk) 22:10, 17 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • No problem, the only thing I want back is the bit about psychological insight; it is in the Nationalencyklopedia, and here too, [22] at the very end but I can tell you (original r) that he really has it. One just need to look. I could probably write something about him myself and I would say the very same thing, he has it. I don't want to make him into a fasionable guy with no depth. Hafspajen (talk) 00:12, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This could be something. http://viaf.org/processed/JPG%7C500032508

  • I found the psychological perception in one of the references you added on my talkpage, and also in Malmö, and put it back - but the Malmö page also says his faces look flat to moderns, so I put that in too. The China art page is deprecated and in any case is the same text as the Web Art page, but that reminded me to put in the Hasslöv church paintings. I'll try to look again at the Handlexikon tomorrow for the picture being lost, but if you can find it, that would be helpful. The hook will have to omit that point if it can't be found. I've looked through the Malmö ref again for the colours changing and still don't see it. Yngvadottir (talk) 05:04, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks, I apreciate that. Well, it can't be helped that people in those rococo clothing look like monkeys for uss nowadays . You mean colour changing ... what colour changing? Hafspajen (talk) 07:49, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
... the bit about his colours in his paintings changing after a certain point in his career. Where's that from? Yngvadottir (talk) 23:04, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Why? Because it's not a fact but an evaluation, which was stated in Wikipedia's voice, basically... Everything really does seem to be turning into total silliness (whoops, is "silliness' going to be next on the list of "bad" words after "nonsense"?). I noticed the thread on Gerda's lovely talk page where Hafs has an image of (UUUUghhhhhh) boiled sheep's head and it reminded me of an old Scottish expression (admittedly generally from the rather more uncouth Glasgow areas ) that I am sometimes so very tempted to use: "Awa an bile yer heid ya numpty, ye dinnae ken whit yer talkin aboot." Oh no, wait - that would only be permissible if used by an Admin?? Eh, weapons. "Sketchbook on military art, including geometry, fortifications, artillery, mechanics, and pyrotechnics" Hafspajen (talk) 12:38, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Petard comes from the Middle French peter, to break wind, from pet expulsion of intestinal gas, from the Latin peditus, past participle of pedere, to break wind, akin to the Greek bdein, to break wind (Merriam-Webster). Petard is a modern French word, meaning a firecracker (it is the basis for the word for firecracker in several other European languages). Petardiers were used during sieges of castles or fortified cities. The petard, a rather primitive and exceedingly dangerous explosive device, consisted of a brass or iron bell-shaped device filled with gunpowder fixed to a wooden base called a madrier. This was attached to a wall or gate using hooks and rings, the fuse lit and, if successful, the resulting explosive force, concentrated at the target point, would blow a hole in the obstruction, allowing assault troops to enter. The word remains in modern usage in the phrase hoist with one's own petard, which means "to be harmed by one's own plan to harm someone else" or "to fall into one's own trap," implying that one could be lifted up (hoist, or blown upward) by one's own bomb.

Good news: approved. Any chance to improve the other singer. - You ask Tibetan Prayer if he likes Tibetans? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:47, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Gues, some reason has to be for its name? Or maybe he/she is Tibetan? Hafspajen (talk) 19:55, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What does this say about her? - Did you know that the pictured Pie is now on the German Main page? (Tibetan Prayer is of course the one whom you asked above.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:34, 3 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No, don't go Hafs - who would fix images for me if you're in a monastery [/* but wait, do monks have internet access in monasteries?] Sorry for sending you on a wild goose chase through the poodle articles, I was speaking about Maisie appearing here on your talk page! Oh, you are just as naughty like Bishy. OK; I will not go to any monasteries. I have been informed that monastic life is demanding; so although you do not need to be an Olympic athlete, it might feel troublesome; trying and bothersome.Hafspajen (talk) 10:19, 5 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Poem

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?

Thou art more lovely and more temperate:

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,

And summer's lease hath all too short a date:

Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,

And often is his gold complexion dimm'd,

And every fair from fair sometime declines,

By chance, or nature's changing course untrimm'd:

But thy eternal summer shall not fade,

Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,

Nor shall death brag thou wand'rest in his shade,

When in eternal lines to Time thou grow'st.

So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,

So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Hello. I didn't think it was that bad, but you can change the "width1=xxx" numbers until they look right, if you're concerned. If you think a single caption across both images would look better, you can use "footer=" - usage is explained at Template:Multiple image. --McGeddon (talk) 13:28, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It is probably my artistic temperament. Gosh, I read that and it sounds complicated. I will some day sitt down and learn how to do multiple images. Until then can you try to do so that both images are of same lenght? If not, it will have to wait until I have more time to concentrate. Hafspajen (talk) 13:37, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I find it easier to copy and paste what other people have done. For multiple images, check out what was done (three different ways) at Homer Davenport (the cartoons), Rainbow trout (the life cycle images) and Welara (a simple method). Good luck! Montanabw(talk) 01:01, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Edit warring

The very last thing I want is to cause edit wars and disruption. If my edits have been harmful or unwanted, I am truly sorry for any trouble caused and hereby promise to refrain from such edits in the future and remove myself from the discussion. It seems as if SandyGeorge, however, no wishes to see me banned, which would be a shame. I do not plan on losing my rights to edit and do not want to escalate anything so I will lay low for a while and ignore the articles about celibacy from now on. Thanks for raising this concern and hopefully this will suffice. And my sincerest apologies for any trouble I may have caused. Mythic Writerlord (talk) 20:20, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No, no trouble at all. We do have to find a solution. Hafspajen (talk) 20:22, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We do. And as for me personally, I am willing to accept the consensus that was reached by the wikipedia community in closing the AfD back in January. Also, I think it is better for me to not be involved in the discussion anymore. I do not want to cause trouble and it seems as if SandyGeorge now wishes to have me banned from this site, so I may take a break. Mythic Writerlord (talk) 20:28, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Eh, I am telling over and over again that you are probably right, right. The only problem is that one have to discuss things. If you try to discuss it, it might work. Hafspajen (talk) 20:33, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I only made one single edit to that page today and this user is already calling it "edit warring". Oh well, thanks for your support. Much appreciated. Mythic Writerlord (talk) 20:34, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you could weigh in on Coffee's talk page this would be most appreciated. You wrongly gave of the impression of me being the disruptive editor rather then Andrey, and as a result SandyGeorgia now believes I am a problemetic user who should be banned. If you could explain some things it would be most appreciated. Mythic Writerlord (talk) 20:57, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I told you I am an idiot. I made more trouble than good. Hafspajen (talk) 20:59, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, no! Don't be so hard on yourself. As far as I can see you are an excellent user doing your very best to improve wikipedia. And you made some wonderful suggestion. I am just asking you to clearify some things on Coffee's talk page before he gets the wrong impression from SandyGeorgia's edits. Mythic Writerlord (talk) 21:02, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

[/Very nosily butts in] As it looks like there are quite a few nice images to use on the Animals Portal, why not consider auto rotating them - a bit like Matty did with my archive box images? I think he does it on the Channel Islands Portal he set up as well? [closes door quietly behind me on the way back out]. SagaciousPhil - Chat 15:24, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
What is autorotate? Now there are quite a lot of nice pic I put here too. [25]. Hafspajen (talk) 15:31, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It was all the nice pics I saw on that nominees link that made me think of it. What I mean is the same trick that Matty used to make the images displayed in my talk page archive box change automatically between the five/six that I pick out. The Portal could have a selection of images that change. SagaciousPhil - Chat 15:55, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, NOW I understand what you mean. How many images can an autorotate rotate? Can it rotate, like multiple images? Hafspajen (talk) 15:59, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It would just depend on how many it's set up for. As I say mine just rotates between five or six and I change the selection used every so often. SagaciousPhil - Chat 16:11, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Now the tricky question is, can it rotate multiple images? But then one can make a collage too, no? Like Crisco could do some, and then we could rotate them. Splendid idea! Hafspajen (talk) 16:18, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • For a portal? You may want to check how P:ID does things. Images rotate automatically. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 16:42, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Mmm. Can you make image collages rotate? Hafspajen (talk) 16:49, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Just a matter of making a collage, uploading it, and using it as a standard image. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:10, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm Mandy, Fly Me? Martinevans123 (talk) 10:20, 9 March 2014

National Airlines used to have this beautiful poster that they displayed of this gorgeous stewardess inviting you onto the plane. Now her name wasn't Mandy actually, it was something like, er, oh gosh knows, "I'm Cindy", a very American name. "I'm Cindy, fly me" which was a quite sexual connotation as well, but I remember seeing in Manchester this beautiful poster and just below it was this tramp, I mean a serious tramp, quite a raggedy guy, looking up at this girl, and I thought God, do you know, there's a song there. Look at that guy looking up at Cindy-fly-me ...

So I brought it back, the idea back to the studio, where we were writing for the How Dare You! album, and put it to the guys: "Anybody interested in this 'I'm Mandy Fly Me'". I'd switched it to Mandy. And Graham said "yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Hafspajen (talk) 10:28, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it's great to feel that I was part of ... song-writing history.

♥ Hafs, I am really sorry to read about the problems you're having over at the Swedish Wikipedia but to get the gist of what's going on I'm having to run it through Google Translate and it is making it just sooooo funny! A couple of examples of the Google translation from the ANI discussion: "Without being fully loaded on the matter ..." and "... in the midst of an infected discussion." Did the good Drmies infect them with something?? I've not been able to get any work done this morning because of giggling about this - but it does let you see why Google translations should never be used. ♥ SagaciousPhil - Chat 12:41, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Bucingham palace is a building [citation needed]. The Big Ben is in England [citation needed]. Wkipedia is an encyclopedia [citation needed]. USA is a land [citation needed]. London is a town[citation needed]. Ok, I think you get me here. This gives people a power over other editors to make them work harder just to find some more citations for things that are quite obvious and highly non-controversial. The thing if Voltaire loved muslims - well, that you see IS ControversiaL. Yes. But there is no reason running around and sprinkeling citation needed on things like - Pavlova is the national dish of New Zeealand. Because it is. And no need removing it, now that is even worse. You do have friends here, Hafs, so don't take events over there to heart - you haven't done anything wrong. RfC (Request for Cakes)

Hello little Hafspaj. Is Saturday tomorrow! Little Bishonen give class in cake-eating in pocket on Saturdays (all welcome). See fridge section? All study materials in fridge stolen copied from little Hafspaj delicious cake gallery on Bishonen page. Little Hafspaj bigtime cake specialist! Feel free add more cakes in fridge, Bishonen and Darwinbish have been eating some! (No images outside fridge, please.) Kindly, bishzilla ROARR!! 22:22, 14 March 2014 (UTC).[reply]

What kind of music will you play? Hafspajen (talk) 22:37, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Elevator music only, because conversation is paramount! But if students bring live instruments, or sing barbershop, is also welcome. Any repertoire that goes well with coffee and cakes. bishzilla ROARR!! 23:47, 14 March 2014 (UTC).[reply]
  • Zilly, you will one day suprise me. hey, maybe you did that already. Elevator music ? When does live recitation by Alfred Lord Tennisball and Percy Bish Shelley start the reception? Hafspajen (talk) 00:37, 15 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Dear Bishonen Is this party here or here? You just put me and my comments in the right place. Hafspajen (talk) 14:53, 15 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Eating on userpage, conversation on talkpage. I thought I said. How are you going to eat on the userpage without registering your presence there, you ask? Well, you'll just have to try. On the userpage: drink the lemon balm tea, eat the cakes, don't edit. (Unless indeed you wish to add more cakes to the fridge, that would be welcome, as are other moderate-sized donations.[29]) On the usertalk: converse. You see? Create a new section on talk and tell everybody your opinion of the cake you're eating, or tell them something else gracious and conversible. But I see you have indeed done it perfectly, after something of a false start. Incidentally, what can you mean by "party"? I must have given completely the wrong impression. It's not a party, it's an educational experience! An Open University class! Kindly do not demean it as a mere party. P.S. For the live recitation of Victorian poetry, that is well thought of, as it is indeed delightful and goes well with cakes. It starts when you click on the youtube link. Oh, and I see from your contributions that you have been spreading the word, that is most appreciated! Bishonen | talk 16:17, 15 March 2014 (UTC).[reply]

Happy "Saint Brian's Day"

Happy Saint Brian's Day
Not just 141 Leprechaun caps. Have a good day !! Martinevans123 (talk) 15:53, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
On my way to you soon. Hafspajen (talk) 15:57, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh darn it! Was hoping this lucky charm might have kept you away! lol Martinevans123 (talk) 16:03, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hafspajen is more like the guy on the Captain Crunch box, than the guy on the Lucky Charms box. He prefers to swagger, and longs for a life on the ocean, rumour has it. However, unlike most pirates, Hafspajen decorates his own vessel. Shockingly tastefully, too!  :-)   p.s. Rumour has it that the Cap'n is actually a Viking, masquerading as a Frenchman,[31] click to see the scandal-mongers, if you dare. 74.192.84.101 (talk) 05:33, 20 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ay, and a happy green day to you, my friend!

Many little green Lithops smiles for you
Paddy's day is, of course, the time for those of us who breed plants to go out to buy the green fabric to make the bags to cover the flowers, the green bags that Leprechauns can see but vandals apparently cannot. Thank-ee kindly for the reminder! Sminthopsis84 (talk) 17:47, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

how very nice. Hafspajen (talk) 17:50, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

re:Rew

If you want to add something to the article, go right ahead. I don't own it, you don't have to ask my permission. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 17:28, 18 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think if you review it first and then add to it, then there isn't a conflict. I have known reviewers do that and it has passed through so I think it's fine as long as it is done that way. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 17:36, 18 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
In that situation, don't change the hook because that would mean there would be a conflict. Just review the current hook and don't change it and there isn't a problem with conflict. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 17:45, 18 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the music link. Maybe I could get that on DYK if/when Jesus Christ is Risen Today runs on the main page.... The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 14:35, 19 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hej Hafspajen, there is an old song, of the folksy kind, about sailing to Byxelkrok. Have you ever heard it? It'd be nice to have it in there. Drmies (talk) 20:16, 18 March 2014 (UTC) AdynatonAstypalaia[reply]

(talk page stalker) Byxelkrok = Byskogskroken? How dull, I always thought it meant Pantscrook. Bishonen | talk 23:04, 19 March 2014 (UTC).[reply]
Dull indeed. But Lomma means Pants-pocket... Hafspajen (talk) 23:14, 19 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Image thumbnail preferences

Hi. I saw your edits at the Tadao Ando article and comments on the article's talk page. I see you are an experienced Wikipedia editor, but I wonder if you knew that you can change the size at which thumbnail images are displayed in your browser by going to "Preferences" -> "Appearance" -> "Files". That allows you to specify the size at which thumbnails in Wikipedia articles are displayed on your own computer setup without forcing everyone else to use the same size just because it happens to look good on your computer screen. As mentioned in the guidelines at WP:ImageSize, forcing a "larger" image size actually makes it smaller for those readers who have a larger size set as preference. Anyway, I added a comment about this on Talk:Tadao Ando, so I hope you can have a look at the manual of style guidelines. --DAJF (talk) 00:30, 19 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Answered on talk page, we try to fix this. Hafspajen (talk) 01:21, 19 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

it's good to be the king

Not quite over... yet.

Now see, if I was the royal type, from that particular nation, then dontcha think I would have come save your buttocks over at svWiki, when you got into hot water for all that wild ♥wikiLoving♥ you and your friends from enWiki were shamelessly engaging in? The sixties are over Hafspajen! Over I say!  :-)   Therefore, because I did NOT save you, that means I must NOT be the Svensk Jewel. Clear as mud? Okay, good then. Carry on. 74.192.84.101 (talk) 04:41, 20 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You might be some long distance cousin. You did not get yourself blocked by leaving some Wikilove, but I do appreciate your concern. You are always very welcome to save me. Hafspajen (talk) 10:43, 20 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Pale Cloud

Hi Hafspajen, I left you a question there. Thanks, Matty.007 19:50, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how the situation looks now. I will ask. Like your new colour. Hafspajen (talk) 20:07, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
smiley face Thank you! I will give it a week or so to let clear candidates come out, then start looking at how to work it. Thanks, Matty.007 20:23, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Editor of the Week

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week, for , as Drmies says, being "a gem" in article collaboration and development, as well as enthusiasm. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Drmies submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate Hafspajen as Editor of the Week for being an all-around nice guy and content creator. He's a gem. Drmies (talk)
