- India's most-wanted man, Veerappan (pictured right), is killed by local police forces after 20 years on the run.
- A referendum in Belarus to permit President Alexander Lukashenko to run for a third term passes, but election monitors dispute its fairness; opposition leader Anatoly Lebedko is arrested and allegedly severely beaten in protests over the outcome.
