- Homo floresiensis, a new species closely related to human beings, has been discovered on the island of Flores in Indonesia, according to a report published in the journal Nature. The discovery came in the form of 12,000-year-old fossils, and the species is presumably now extinct; however, it is the most recent human relative known.
- A vote by the European Parliament over the approval of the new European Commission has been delayed after incoming president José Durão Barroso (pictured right) asks for more time to reshuffle his team.
- The Cassini spacecraft makes its closest flyby yet of Titan, resulting in images up to 100 times better than anything seen before.
