This sentence follows the previous paragraph that is discussing "self-stability", i.e. whether a bicycle can balance on its own, so without the added clarification the reader may think that Jones proved something about bicycle self-stability, which he didn't. undo

I would be fairly sure other manufacturers have made similar products.
