Rivkah Brown (born 1992) is an English journalist. She currently serves as editor-in-chief at Vashti Media, as well as commissioning editor and reporter for Novara Media. She previously filled this role for The Independent.

Early life and education[edit]

Brown is from Stamford Hill, East London.[1] She attended the Henrietta Barnett School in North London. She went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in English from Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 2014 and a Master of Studies in World Literatures in English from the University of Oxford in 2016. For the latter, she earned an Ertegun Graduate Scholarship.[2]

Career[edit]

Upon graduating from Cambridge, Brown began her career writing Edinburgh Fringe Festival reviews for Broadway Baby,[3] as well as film and television reviews for Aesthetica. Later in 2016, she served as Co-Editor-in-Chief at The Inkling, a Medium-based essay magazine, and helped with publicity for the independent film The New Man. Brown worked as a policy advisor in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) in 2017.[4]

After interning at the Financial Times and contributing to publications such as The Guardian, The New Statesman, the London Review of Books, Ha'aretz and Dazed, Brown became a senior commissioning editor and columnist for The Independent in 2019 as well as Editor-in-Chief at Vashti Media. She wrote a number of articles for the former criticising the British monarchy.[5] She also produced podcasts for UnHerd.[6] In the run-up to the 2019 general election, Brown was a member of the campaign group Jews Against Boris (later Jewish Solidarity Action).[7] In January 2020, Brown wrote an article on Holocaust revisionism in Poland, prompting a Twitter "pile-on" upon being criticised by Polish-born Conservative MP Daniel Kawczynski, who doubled down on his remarks in Parliament. Shortly after, Kawczynski came under fire for speaking at a far-right conference, on which Brown wrote "Kawczynski is a symptom of a disease endemic within British Conservatism".[8][9]

Brown joined Novara Media in 2021 as commissioning editor and reporter. During her time at Novara, Brown has covered stories about internal Labour Party politics (such as Apsana Begum's harassment by her ex-husband),[10] the housing crisis,[11] and transphobia.[12] Brown also became known on the platform for her vox-pop-style street interviews.[13] In addition, she has appeared on programmes such as Channel 4 News and LBC.[14][15]
