Talk:List of open access nonprofit journals

Academic journals were originally outlets of knowledge where a society or an academy contributed with peer review, and received advances in their field. Today this has changed as journals have become important sources of income for for-profit publishers who usually do not pay for the work academics do such as peer review but do charge them and their institutions, sometimes twice as in hybrid open access. This page attempts to list the journals that still follow the original spirit of journals, which is to promote the advancement of a field (not profit from it) with the addition of open access which is possible with today´s technology.

Notes: In order to add journals to this list please ensure that the organizations publishing the journals are nonprofit. This list differs from the open access journals list in the non-profit portion. For example, BMC journals are not shown here as they are for-profit. Another difference with the open access journals list is that they do not need be notable, altough indexed and peer reviewed. These three requirements (open access, indexed and peer reviewed, and not for profit) should preclude predatory open access journals as well as for profit journals that have open acccess options. Finally hybrid open access is not included because of the double payment problem, as the journals are essentially closed with exceptions, not open.

Jounals for which I have not been able to verify if they are non-profit or not are commented out. I expect to fix that in the next couple weeks. Also, journals that invest profits on the development of a particular society are fine as their main purpose is not generating profits but advancement in a field.

This may not be the best solution, but Indexing by ISI and scopus is currently the most reliable (simple) way that I know to ensure basic journal quality. If you have a better way to do this it is welcome! please discuss :) manumanu
