substances are not reabsorbed by the pre-synaptic membrane, there is a specific uptake, called the reuptake. It includes specific transport-proteins localized in the membrane of the cell. These transporters are existing for 5-HT (blocked by SSRIs) (and other monoaminergic transmitters, respectively) and choline (a methabolic product of acetylcholine)! So in the given definition 5-HT and ACh are not neuromodulators!! Please give some literature advices!--137.248.201.76 18:12, 18 October 2005 (UTC) (Zsynth)[reply]

The term Neuromodulator is not well defined. The substance does not govern the effect, the receptor does, or more precisely the way the receptor is used in the system. Therefore, substances such as acetylcholine can serve as a neurotransmitter at the neuromuscular junction, but can serve as a neuromodulator in central synapses.
