Bothersome[edit]

There is something bothersome about the way the article is put together. While the noun "retard" does, in a way, refer to the affliction of mental retardation, it does not relate to the first bullet point in the same manner as it does to the second bullet point. When someone uses the term "retard" as a noun, they are not (in my experience) referring to the diminished mental capacity a person might have, but to the person him/herself. Please include an example in which "retard" can mean "mental retardation" or make the two points parallel.

Whoever did the edit containing the phrase "advocates of retardation" (paraphrased) should realize that one can not advocate (which would imply "promote") something that is a defect. Mental retardation does not change the affected person's abilities, and thus he is not "differently abled" but "disabled" or similar. One can not be an advocate of something that is an inherent flaw. That would be nonsense.

Tell that to the Amputation fetishists. The flaw is in the eye of the beholder. It was not so long ago that the color of one's skin or the type of genitals underneath one's clothing were seen as permanent flaws. However, the phrasing is problematic, as few people consider the reduction of mental faculties to be an actual benefit to the person so affected. Garry St. Jean redirect?[edit]

How do I fix a redirect? I was going through the Sacramento Kings page, clicked on Garry St. Jean, and it takes you to retard. Obviously somebody did a little tampering. If there is no page for St. jean, than we need it to go to an unedited page.

Pharmaceutical uses[edit]

Many manufacturers of pharmaceuticals use the term "retard" added to the name of their product to indicate that its formulation is such that the blood level of the substance stays in the therapeutic range for a longer period. Such as "Bupropion" vs. "Bupropion retard," the second preparation being in the therapeutic range for a longer period, thus requiring only a daily once or twice administration as opposed to, say, daily three-six times.
It has come to my attention that in many pharmaceutical articles, the term "retard" was mindlessly removed from after the names of medications, even though it is part of the name and not vandalism. For the same reason we have "#REDIRECT Fellatio" at Blow job. A redirect from slang to the formal term keeps people from redirecting from slang to a living person accused of having intellectual disability.
