Fleeting Indecency is an American rock band formed in Bordentown Township, New Jersey in 2018 by Erodori Gabriel and Colin O'Brien.

History[edit]

Fleeting Indecency was formed in Bordentown Township, New Jersey, a town located southeast of Trenton, New Jersey. Gabriel and O'Brien met while they attended Bordentown Regional High School in 2017 after meeting through mutual friends. They also shared common political and musical ideas. They formed Fleeting Indecency in June 2018 after sharing lyrical ideas with one another. The band cites the presidency of Donald Trump, the criminal indictment of former Bordentown Township Police Chief Frank Nucera Jr, and the current affairs of US politics as their driving factor to start a band.

The band recorded demo tapes throughout the end of 2018 and into 2019 consisting of cover songs from other bands and spent most time demoing individually, then getting together to share lyrics and instrumental parts. These demos were released on YouTube on February 9, 2019 and consists mostly of Gabriel's solo tapes.

On April 12th 2019 the band released a limited release single called I Won't Let Them Forget on Bandcamp on April 12th 2019 exclusively on Bandcamp after someone O'Brien knew in a online community committed suicide and donated all proceeds from the single to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. [1] The song was an entirely acoustic driven song recorded by O'Brien a few nights after he heard of the person's passing. The song was removed from their page a few days later.

They released their first official single, a cover of The Mountain Goats song Color In Your Cheeks in November 2019 on Bandcamp and all major streaming services. On March 10, 2020, the band released the first single from their debut album called Shrine of Resurrection.

Later on in the year, the band teased the released of a new single with a video repeating the lyrics "I won't let you be forgotten, I won't let them forget.", this turned out to be the chorus of the original demo for I Won't Let Them Forget which was re-released on all platforms on May 8, 2020 in a re-recorded fashion, with O'Brien on vocals and guitar, and Gabriel on keyboards and bass. The song quickly turned into their top streamed song in a matter of days.

In November 2020. Gabriel publicly came out as transgender, after suffering from gender dysphoria for many years.

Throughout the end of 2020 and into 2021. Fleeting Indecency released multiple EP's and albums. Most material released during this time period was recorded solely by Gabriel either acoustically with pianos and guitars or completely electrically. O'Brien denied leaving the band, stating that he was still working on his own material for their first album as a duo and he was letting Gabriel release material as she pleased. O'Brien has stated that the band has started working on their first collaborative album, but had problems recording stemming from the ongoing pandemic and conflicts with his day job. They recorded a live performance of I Won't Let Them Forget in April 2021 and released it in July 2021.

O'Brien eventually and briefly left the band in 2021 to focus on non musical endeavors. Gabriel continued to release music solo under the name and released the instrumental albums First Frost and Press Start. O'Brien moved away from New Jersey to Cleveland, Ohio in mid 2022 and continued to work on songs for the band from a home studio in the city.

In March 2023, the band released the demo track of "I Won't Let Them Forget" in honor of a high school friend both Gabriel and O'Brien knew who had committed suicide a few months prior. All proceeds raised went to suicide prevention organizations.

In August 2023, Fleeting Indecency finally announced their first collaborative EP called Ejected Identity with songs written and sung by O'Brien for the first time since 2020. Gabriel was largely absent from this recording but is credited with producing songs, along with Joel Phillips, who is credited alongside O'Brien as a writer.

Activism[edit]

Fleeting Indecency has been involved in activism including supporting organizations that advocate for LGBT rights and suicide prevention, as well as many left-wing organizations. Fleeting Indecency consistently donates money to suicide prevention foundations via their song "I Won't Let Them Forget", which was written by Colin for a friend he lost to suicide.

Both Gabriel and O'Brien have strong left-wing values and opinions, Gabriel is a member of the Green Party. Both are active dues paying members in the Democratic Socialists of America.

Influences[edit]

The band has cited Against Me! and Blink-182 as one of their main influences. Gabriel's influences are more pop driven and include Madonna, AJJ, and The Mountain Goats, while O'Brien's influences are more space rock oriented and include Angels & Airwaves, Failure, Starset, and Real Friends.

O'Brien was heavily influenced by Tom Delonge and has credited him as the musician that made him pick up a guitar.
