Joseph C. Kvedar, MD, (February 5, 1957) is Founder and Director of the Center for Connected Health[1] a division of Partners HealthCare, which operates Massachusetts General and Brigham & Women’s Hospitals. He is also Associate Professor of Dermatology, Harvard Medical School[2], and a Board certified dermatologist[3]. Kvedar is associated with the field of Connected Health[4][5][6], in which consumer technologies are used to improve patient care.

Education[edit]

Joseph Kvedar was educated at the University of Vermont, where he received Bachelor of Arts (1979) and Doctor of Medicine (1983) degrees. He was an Intern at Boston University Medical Center (1983-1984) and served his residency in Dermatology at various Harvard Medical School-affiliated hospitals (1984 to 1988). During that time, Kvedar participated in a research fellowship in the Department of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School and subsequently (1985-1986) was a Research Fellow in the Department of Biochemistry at Brandeis University[7].

Connected Health[edit]

In 1994, Kvedar began investigating the use of digital technology to facilitate remote care in his dermatology practice[8]. Kvedar was appointed Medical Director of the Telemedicine Center at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1995. In 2006, the organization changed its name to the Center for Connected Health.[9][10]

Kvedar has been acknowledged as a "pioneer" in connected health[11] and has received several awards and accolades for his work (see "Contributions and Honors").

As Director of the Center for Connected Health, Kvedar’s work has extended to patient care programs in cardiology[12], endocrinology[13], gynecology[14] and emergency medicine[15], as well as primary care in rural Cambodia[16].

Contributions and Honors[edit]

Kvedar is a Past President of the American Telemedicine Association (ATA)[17] and an advisor to the teledermatology task force. [18] He is also Past Chair of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Task Force on Telemedicine and a member of its Sulzberger Institute for Dermatologic Education Committee.[19]

Kvedar is an Associate Editor of the journal, Telemedicine and eHealth[20] and has authored over 90 publications on connected health (see "Bibliography"). He co-authored the definitive teledermatology guidelines.[21]

In 2007, Kvedar co-edited Home Telehealth: Connecting Care within the Community (RSM Press, London)[22] which reports on the applications of technology to deliver quality healthcare in the home.

Kvedar is also a Board member of the Care Continuum Alliance[23]. He is a founding member and alternative Board member of the Continua Health Alliance.[24] He also serves as a strategic advisor at Physic Ventures[25] and is a mentor at Blueprint Health[26].

He is a member of multiple continuing medical education (CME) committees at Harvard Medical School, including the Harvard Medical School CME Innovation Committee and the Committee on Continuing Education[27]. Kvedar has also served as Combined Dermatology Residency Program Director since 2000[28].

In 2009, Kvedar was honored by the American Telemedicine Association, with its Individual Leadership Award[29].

In 2008, he was acknowledged with a Distinguished Academic Achievement Award by the University of Vermont Medical Alumni Association[30] and, in 2003, was honored by the New England Business and Technology Association.[31]
