William Campbell Steere Jr. (Bill Steere) was CEO of Pfizer from 1991 until his retirement in 2001. [2] He focused Pfizer's business on its research-based, global pharmaceutical business.[2]
Career[edit]
Steere began working at Pfizer as a medical service representative in 1959 immediately after graduation from Stanford University where his father William Campbell Steere Jr. had been professor from 1950 to 1954[3] and dean of graduate studies until 1958.[4]
Steere was VP from 1982 to 1984, then EVP from 1984 to 1986. He served as President of Pfizer Pharmaceuticals from 1986 to 1990, President of Pfizer from 1990 to 1991 and CEO from February 1991 to December 2000. He remained on as an influential director on the Board of Directors until 2011. "Steere served as the President and Chief Executive Officer at Pfizer until 1992. He served as the President of Pfizer Pharmaceutical Group. He has in-depth knowledge of the health care industry. He has been the Chairman Emeritus of Pfizer Inc. since July 2001. Steere earned a B.S. in Biology in 1959 from Stanford University[5] where his father William Campbell Steere Jr. had been professor from 1950 to 1954[3] and dean of the graduate division of Stanford University from 1950 to 1958.[4]

Early years at Pfizer[edit]
"Joined Pfizer directly from Stanford University in 1959, beginning as a sales representative. He held a variety of United States and international sales, marketing, and general management positions and became president of Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in 1986. "In late 1999, Steere announced Pfizer's intention to merge with Warner–Lambert, which, like Pfizer, was a fast-growing, global, health care company whose roots extended back to the mid-1800s. In June 2000, Pfizer and Warner-Lambert began operating as a single company with more than 85,000 colleagues worldwide."[2]
Strategies[edit]
In the mid-1990s there was a push in the United States towards managed health care. Many drug companies cut their sales force. As the then new CEO of Pfizer, Steere poured money into sales and advertising and hired more sales representatives.[6]
Philanthropy[edit]
"In 2002 Mr. Steere and his wife Lynda helped endow the new William and Lynda Steere Herbarium of The New York Botanical Garden, the foundation of the Garden's botanical research program."[1]
