Philip C Kendall, Ph.D. ABPP is a Distinguished University Professor, a Laura H. Carnell Professor of Psychology, and Director of the Child and Adolescent Anxiety Disorders Clinic at Temple University. His research is prolific in the social and medical sciences but he is best well-known for his research into cognitive-behavioral treatments for anxiety. He has published over 650 papers and has an h-index of 105 (in 2017).[1] His work has earned him numerous awards. This research has been funded by various agencies including the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and the MacArthur Foundation.[citation needed] Dr. Kendall received his undergraduate degree from Old Dominion University and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the Virginia Commonwealth University.


Research[edit]

Dr. Kendall's research concerns child and adolescent clinical psychology.  His major focuses are on anxiety disorders (and the treatment thereof) and on developing computer-aided mental health services.[2] This research has yielded at least 20 treatment manuals/workbooks and numerous treatment programs, many of which have been translated into other languages. His work into mental health services is the basis for his online clinic, Child and Adolescent Anxiety Disorders Clinic. His work is frequently cited by American Psychological Association programs (ranking as the fifth most-cited individual in 2017) and covers topics including the "treatment of anxiety disorders in youth, cognitive-behavioral theory, assessment, treatment, research methodology, and [...] the conceptualizing and understanding of the psychopathology and treatment of children and adolescents".[2]

Dr. Kendall has authored over 35 books and more than 20 treatment manuals and workbooks—some of these works have been translated into other languages.[1]


Professional Roles[edit]

Dr. Kendall is active at Temple University, where he is a named chair and bears a Distinguished University Professorship.[2] He is a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences, as well a past president of both the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology (Division 53) of the American Psychological Association and the Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy (now known as the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies).[1] Dr. Kendall remains active in his capacities as a researcher and clinician.


Honors and Awards[edit]

Dr. Kendall's work have garnered him numerous awards from professional organizations. As a professor, he received the "Great Teacher" award from Temple University. In 2016, he received the Aaron T. Beck Award for Significant and Enduring Contributions to Cognitive Therapy from the Academy of Cognitive Therapy.[1] Dr. Kendall was recognized by the ABCT with an award for his “Outstanding Contribution by an Individual for Educational / Training Activities".[2] In 2007, he was awarded the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology Distinguished Career Award.[3] He has been honored with the Outstanding Alumnus Award from Old Dominion University and Virginia Commonwealth University. He also received the inaugural Research Recognition Award from the Anxiety Disorders Association of America.[1] In 2006, he was given the Society of Clinical Psychology's Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Science of Clinical Psychology.[1]
