Hello, and welcome to my user page![edit]

I am the one and only TheTechie! I joined 1525 days ago, and have been editing Wikipedia since. I have been renamed once to this current name from Mseingth2133444 (/ɛmɛsiːɪŋθ/ or "em-es-ee-ing-th"), and was renamed on 2024-03-21 (PT). I have made over 3000 edits to the English Wikipedia (across all namespaces, not just article namespace). I usually am doing recent changes patrol. If you need to contact me regarding Wikipedia, please leave me a message on my talk page; this can be easily done by clicking the "talk" link on the top and starting a new section.

About me[edit]

Like my username suggests, I am a techie, a person who really likes technology. As such, this is what I'm interested in editing in (when I'm not doing anti-vandalism, new page, or recent changes patrols).

What Techie stuff do I do in my free time[edit]

Linux[edit]

I actually have an old HP with Linux on it. Funny story, I accidentally wiped Windows when trying to install Ubuntu (which used to work but doesn't). So I had no choice, and installed Linux Mint, which worked. Funny story, that's where my signature is from, it's inspired by the prompt from the Mint Terminal. I am loving it! Usually, I try out different desktop environments (I have Ubuntu GNOME, KDE Plasma, Mint MATÉ, Mint XFCE, and Mint Cinnamon installed). If you run into any issues with Linux, feel free to ask on the Computing Wikipedia Reference Desk, but do not ask me on my talk page. After all, Wikipedia is not a social media website.

Coding[edit]

I also know some coding and do some in my free time. I know Python the most, some HTML/CSS/JS (not JQuery though), and a little bit of C#, C, and assembly code.

My history on Wikipedia[edit]

New account to autoconfirmed[edit]

On March 13, 2020, I registered an account with the username of Mseingth2133444. Back then, I didn't do much. I did a few generic edits and played around in my sandbox. By April 7, I became autoconfirmed. But not much long after, I left Wikipedia and forgot about my account. Until 3 years later...

The return[edit]

Three years later, in October 2023, I returned to Wikipedia. I don't exactly remember how it happened, but I think I wanted to change a setting or something which required an account. But I realized I had an account just lying around for 3 years with no edits. So I returned as a sort of trial. I liked it, so I started editing a bit, editing iOS 17 in particular. I only made one edit in November for reasons I can't remember, but in December I was back in full force.

Anti-vandalism[edit]

During my return period, or maybe even after, I discovered the sheer amount of vandalism on Wikipedia. So I wanted to help. I discovered Twinkle (and later Ultraviolet and RedWarn). So I started reverting vandalism and leaving warnings, mostly on tech-related articles. One time an IP I was trying to get to stop even removed an MFD tag for a draft I wanted to nominate for deletion. The IP was removing the MFD template so often that I was nearing 3 reverts (back then, I didn't know that 3RR didn't apply to vandalism). It was even so bad that even the extraordinary Liz got confused and left me a talk page message (can be viewed in my talk page archives). But while I was reverting vandalism, I also had a goal...

The path to extended confirmed[edit]

When I started seriously editing Wikipedia, I wanted an achievement. I decided that I would work towards extended confirmed status, as it's yet another user right (I love user rights!), and some pages that I wanted to edit were ECR protected due to lots and lots of vandalism.

On March 8, 2024, it finally happened. I became extended confirmed. It was a great achievement.

New name[edit]

Right before I got my pending changes reviewer user right, I renamed my account. Why? Well, firstly...no wait, never mind, I'll put it in a list.

  1. It was long to type.
  2. The 2133444 at the end was just nonsense in my opinion, as was Mseingth (I think Ms stood for Microsoft or something, but I can't just remember). I think I only chose that username because it wasn't taken. Shameful.
  3. I wanted a username that reflected my interests, and luckily TheTechie wasn't taken. So I took it.

More user permissions[edit]

Right after renaming, I got the pending changes review user right on March 23, 2024. It was amazing for me to actually get a new permission, as some articles I edited had pending changes that I couldn't do anything about. Now I could.

Later, on May 7, 2024, I got the new page reviewer right as a trial until June 8, 2024 (before which I can ask for feedback on my patrolling). This had three pluses: I could do NPP reviewing, I could do AFC reviewing (which I had really wanted to do for a long time), and I could reduce the NPP backlog (when I started I think it was 8 years for articles, last time I checked, it was under 3).

So that wraps up where I am now. I hope to become a rollbacker in the near future, and earn more user permissions (and maybe even be an admin one day). Thank you for reading about the history of TheTechie (hey, that's me!)

What does "he/they/she" mean?[edit]

Good question! It just means that I'm okay with you addressing me by either he/him, she/her, or they/them pronouns. I did this to keep my gender identity private, while allowing editors to exercise utmost flexibility when referring to or talking to me. You are free to use any of these pronouns to refer to me. If I reveal my gender identity in the future, which is a big if, I will likely still allow editors to use those pronouns.

Why don't I allow editors to use neopronouns?[edit]

While I fully respect anyone who wishes to use neopronouns, with all respect, I do find it a bit confusing sometimes (with the exception of ey/em). Maybe it's because the he/they/she pronouns have been in English longer than we can count, but that is why I don't allow editors to use neopronouns when referring to me, with utmost respect.
