The Second Agricultural Revolution

The Second Agricultural Revolution was a historic period that began in Great Britain [1] in roughly the year 1650 and lasted until early in the 20th century. Through the use of innovation and ingenuity, this time period had many lasting impacts on the agriculture industry, which not only affected the following years but modern society as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ummvepNNf_c

Inventions

Through this time period, many inventions came to be. One of the most influential is the idea of crop rotation, which is still used today. This new technique allowed for farmers to grow different crops in the same field which allowed for both seasonal rotation as well as increased nutrients in the soil, providing an increased crop yield. Other new technologies from this time period include the threshing machine, seed drill, and barbed wire. All of which increased time efficiency for farmers and the production/quality of crops. [2]

Impacts

Before the Second Agricultural Revolution, there was an unspoken need for change as the world relied on subsistence farming which proved to be extremely inefficient. This time period converted society to begin to rely on commercial agriculture which allowed for growth in other areas of society. The impacts from this time period are great. Through the more efficient use of technology to grow food, it also led to an increased quality of life. This in turn also led the birth rate to increase and populations to soar across Europe as well as North America.
