Please do not synonymize Scientology with the Church of Scientology. Regardless of the novelty of a set of doctrine, beliefs and practices differ significantly from organizational structure as a concept. The modern "Church of Scientology" is the 501(c) registered name of the organization, run by the governing body Religious Technology Center and differs historically and significantly from both L. Ron Hubbard's organization and the belief system as a whole, comparable to how organizational Dianetics differed from the recontextualization and advent of Scientology. Scientology has spawned a number of off-shoots, including self-identified Scientologists who practice varying degrees of Scientology outside of the the Church of Scientology, hypnotherapists, and other spiritual and/or self-help movements.

Please do not state with assertion that any organization is objectively a cult, as that is an argument of quality that disrupts the encyclopedic tone.

If you would like to include arguments in favor of any organization being a cult, feel free to frame it within its authors' research and cite your sources. If you would like to argue in favor of Scientology being a cult, please access the relevant sociological pages: High Control Group, Brainwashing, Thought reform, Disorganized attachment, list of cults, New religious movements, Scientology controversies, et al.
