GULBAHAR SINGH

                                        Film Director

Introduction : Mr. Gul Bahar Singh is a sikh based in Kolkata, India, a graduate in science. He is a film maker known for his socially critical directing style. He has touched on many themes and genres. His deft handling and treatment of social issues such as cast discrimination, old age problem, atrocities against women are commendable in his films. He has been recipient of prestigious National and International awards. He has also served as a jury in National & International film festivals.


Early Life : Born at Pakur (now Jharkhand) in a Sikh middle class family, is the thirteenth child of his parents and youngest in the family. He studied in Pakur, Kolkata and Faridabad. Defying the tradition of business in the family, he has carved a nitch for himself and self trained himself to become a film maker. He took several rounds of Kolkata film studios to learn and observed nuances of film making. While watching films shooting, editing and music recording in the studios, he made acquaintances with some film directors and understood the technique of film making while observing their working. He realised that the film making is absolutely depend on personal creativity, hence only technique is to be learned. He learned Bengali language before venturing into his first film, a documentary “WEEDS” on street children which received rave reviews and put him in the league of film makers of Bengal at that time.

Personal life : Gul Bahar Singh is married and has been leading a happy life with his wife, Gurmeet Kaur. He has lost his only daughter in 2004.The tragedy has rendered him emotionally and creatively deserted for a quite long time.

Career : He won his first national award in 1986 for his documentary film “ ANUKARAN” which has a theme of status of women in India. “BIOTECHNOLOGY; Some possibilities” won him a national award in 1986. A feature film financed by N.F.D.C. “ SUNDARI ( Hindi )” was shown in Calcutta film festivals and Participated in VIth, International film festivals in Sochi ( MOSCOW), received “ DIPLOMA FOR PARTICIPATION. A short film “ BHEET”(Bengali) won a National award in 44th National film festival as best film on Family welfare film. “GOTIPUA” a documentary, has won National award in 45th National film festivals. A feature film “THE GOAL” Featuring Irrfan Khan in main lead, has WON GOLDEN LOTUS in 47th National Film Festivals” as best Children film, produced by Children Film Society, India, a special Jury award at 11th,Cairo International Children’s Film Festival, Egypt, special mention by the jury of International Federation of Film Societies, IFFS at the festival at Zlin 2001 in Czech Republic. Selected in India Panorama, 2001, also participated in Golden Elephant Children’s Film Festival 2001. Hyderabad, A Short Film for BBC on leprosy during this time has made name internationally. “DATTAK”(THE ADOPTED) A feature film for NFDC- Rajit Kapoor, A.K.Hangal, participated in the 5th Shanghai International Film Festival, China in competition as only entry from India in China and also Hawai International Film Festivals 2001, 7th Bradford Black & Asian Film Festivals, U.K. Participated in 20th Fajr International Film Festivals,Tehran (Iran).The film has been participated in Cannes film festival and sold in its marketing right in the market. “DHATRIPANNA” a short film won National award in 50th National Film Festival,2003. Minisrty of Informatiuon &Broadcasting.Govt of India.He has made a tele film “Jogajog “ on Rabindranath Tagore’s famous novel by the same name and a nine part Tele serial “Nishi Kutumb” Written in Bengali by Manoj Basu. Both these programmes were based on Bengali Literature and highly appreciated by viewers and crtics. Both these programmes were made for Kolkata Doordarshan in 2005-2006.served as jury in 16th, Cairo International film festival 2006, Egypt. Currently has made a Biopic [1] With Hema Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).Malini, &[2] & Sachin khedekar, which is based on the book “[3]on the life and times of Vijaya Raje scendia of Gwalior written by Smt Mridula Sinha, Governor of Gao.. The trailer of the film was launched by Amitabh Bachchan on 30th March,2017 in Mumbai and the film has successful release on 21st April,2017 all over world.
