Return specialist

You'll probably notice what I did to the Ted Ginn, Jr. article, and I know we've both edited that before there. I really think "Return specialist" is the right phrase to use there rather than to write both out, plus doing the latter takes up two lines in the infobox which I'd prefer to avoid. Do you have any idea what we might be able to do about this? Make a Return specialist article? Redirect the phrase somewhere? I understand why you're wary about linking it to Kickoff returner, but I feel like that phrase is the best way to go no matter where it links. Actually, I didn't notice the edit. I had taken Ginn's article off my watchlist a couple weeks ago. As for the edit you made, I don't oppose it. The reason why I said them separately was because the Dolphins' roster template had him as a "KR" and "PR" at the time of the edit. I know a lot about the football rules and stuff, but I'm not familiar with the positions exactly. Hey, after Tony Romo held the snap on the failed PAT in the playoffs last year (which I saw in San Francisco on vacation), I thought that maybe everybody on every team doubled up at some position. It does look quite horrid having two lines in the infobox for the position, and I haven't seen that happen anywhere else, so that's definitely something we should avoid. I'm not sure if we should create a return specialist article because I'm sure there are many kick returners who don't return punts, and vice versa, and therefore a unified article wouldn't necessarily apply to some of them. Yeah I mean some guys handle both jobs, it just depends. Devin Hester, Dante Hall, Ted Ginn, Jr., guys like that, guys that are really good returners or are at least expected to be (in Ginn's case) usually handle both, so "Return specialist" is a much better label for them than "kick and punt returner." But yeah, there are plenty of teams that have different guys do each. Just depends on if you have one of those guys that's got great athletic ability and some serious return skills.

Also, I'm not so sure I agree on that last edit. I think parentheses is perfect for that sentence. It's not incorrect to write that way, and the sentence itself is just a little thrown-in piece of info not directly related to Ginn's career. Devin Hester can play practically every offensive position. Kick returner, punt returner, wide receiver, running back, you name it. Heck, Smith could put him as the team's third quarterback on the depth chart, and he'd still probably do better than any quarterback the Dolphins have... no offense. They are just pretty bad this year.

Gramatically, I don't think there's anything wrong with [using parenthesis in that case], but since it was a complete sentence, I would think that we could at least just leave the two sentences separated as two sentences, minus the parenthesis. In my opinion, either using a comma to join the two together or even using a semicolon instead of the parenthesis would be alright, as well. Ksy92003(talk) 00:34, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Linking cities and states

I really think it'd odd the way you link both the city and state separately, and I'd like to find out what the preferred method of doing it is here. I mean it seems to me if you have an article, for example Berkeley Lake, Georgia you link to it directly. The way you're doing it, it'd make since to link Houston Texans as [[Houston, Texas|Houston]] [[Houston Texans|Texans]] or college football as [[college]] [[college football|football]]. The reason why I link it is kinda hard for me to explain. I'm not sure if I can explain it. When I make those changes, I don't do it individually. I only make those changes when I'm making other edits already because I personally don't think it matters that much. I just think it would be helpful to link to both a city and a state. There is no right or wrong way, but this would be something interesting to ding out about, maybe at WP:MOS or something. But I don't go out of my way to make those changes; I only make those edits when there is another edit I'm making to that article. So personally, I don't think it is a big deal, and there isn't really any problem with doing it either way. Ksy92003(talk) 22:18, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Before I make this comment, know that I'm not arguing with you about this, if it sounds like I am. Both ways link to the city in a proper manner. To me, it would make sense that if somebody wanted to click on the link to go to the city's article, then they'd probably click on the city name instead of the state. Both ways are good in my opinion, but on second thought, it would still be best to have them all the same way.

I saw on my watchlist that an anon made a 1,000+ edit on a page on my watchlist and looked at their contributions, and saw that their most recent edit was to the help desk, and out of curiosity, I checked it out. It had nothing to do with the fact that it was you. Is there anything wrong with looking at one person's contributions and joining in on a discussion that person started? It's the same thing as if you were joining in on a conversation at WP:ANI. I didn't go there because it was you. I went there because I saw that the anon had a 1,000+ comment about something you did, and I went to give my opinion. I'm sorry that I have opinions about things.

I was not following you around, and I'd appreciate it if you'd assume good faith. I'm sure that if I did something that you thought was wrong, and somebody had come here about it and taken it to ANI or something, that you would give your opinion also. I didn't criticize you, and even if I did, I'm free to make those comments if I think that you were wrong. I'm sorry if you didn't like what I had to say there; it's not my fault. When I was blocked, that happened when I didn't know that it was against a policy, and the user I was "stalking" was the one who unblocked me after I explained to him that I didn't know it was against policy. As for this case, I saw he made a huge edit, and I looked at his contributions because I wanted to know why he left you that comment. In that last sentence, I meant that there is something that I want to say, but I'm smart enough to know not to say it for fear of being blocked for WP:CIVIL should you take it that way. I said I was working on this. I'm thinking about what I say before I say it, and I'm not going to take the risk of saying something I feel I need to say because you might block me for WP:CIVIL.

And it doesn't matter much to me how much you sympathize with me. In my opinion, you're just one person, and whatever goes on between us doesn't change how other people think of me. If you don't want to sympathize with me, I could care less.

And I know you well enough. In the past weeks, you have come to my talk page acting mad at me for such trivial issues. In two cases, you have gotten mad at me for trying to resolve a long-lasting conflict and once for making a fair, good-faith comment on a noticeboard. Both of these actions I've taken are encouraged, and you've discouraged me in each case. So why wouldn't I think that you would block me for a potentially-uncivil comment? Hector Lopez failed at WP:GAC mainly because we did not have any information other than his professional baseball career. I would suspect if we could find anything about him from before 1952 we would meet with success. Do you know if they use any sort of click through or traffic monitor on pages. It had been quite a while since your last edit. Where have you been? User:BrianY (Hornberry) already started the page for the next season and I started all the standings templates. I don't have time to create the game log for the Angels too, but I don't think I have much time to work on the game log. I see that you strongly opposed Hdt83 for having four RFAs in five months. I strongly supported him because he's a very helpful person. He was the first person to put something in my talk page which was a welcome message. He gave me advice the first month I made my account. Well, I just hadn't edited for a while because I had a bunch of homework to do last night: AP Calculus, AP Spanish, and Government. I wasn't able to focus on Wikipedia until after I had completed all that last night. I'll work on the Angels' stuff when I have the opportunity. I'll have a lot to say if A-Rod comes to Anaheim.

As for the RfA, I didn't strongly oppose him so much because it was his fourth RfA in five months... it was mostly because it was his fourth self-nom in five months. This really gives the impression that he is desperate to become an admin, so to speak, and that he really wants to have the power. My oppose was mainly based on just that. Maybe I should make that my name =D I jumped on the Rox' bandwagon when they won 21 of 22. When Oakland won 20 consecutive games in 2002, I didn't jump on their bandwagon because they kept my Angels from winning the AL West. But we know what happened later that postseason, don't we you A's fans? Heck, I was even talking with some A's fans I saw at the Kings/Sharks hockey game I went to tonight and brought that up. "Hey, you may have won 20 games in a row, but we were the ones to win 11 games in October, '02!"

Fortunately, the A's are selling all their talent (Mulder, Hudson, and Zito all since '02 is ridiculous) and are relying on who these past couple years, Thomas and Piazza? Hey, maybe Mo Vaughn can come out of retirement and help them... unless he breaks his leg in the top of the first inning of the first game of the season, like he did for the Angels. Although in Vaughn's defense, if it weren't for him, the '00 Angels (might not be '00, maybe '99) wouldn't have been the only team in MLB history to have four 30+ home run hitters (Tim Salmon, Troy Glaus, Garret Anderson, and Mo Vaughn) in a season. This is funny because you look at the Angels now, and you wouldn't imagine that they are the only team to achieve any sort of home run-related accomplishment.

Sorry for rambling on; I just wanna say something because I don't wanna go to bed now, at 12:30... especially with daylight savings time; we get one more hour of sleep =D But speaking of the Bay Area, at the hockey game tonight, when Jeremy Roenick came out of the Sharks tunnel, where I was just because I wanted to say "you suck, J.R.!," I was booing him and said "you suck" and all that [because he wasn't that great when he played for the Kings two years ago]. He just pointed at me and winked at me. Of course, thanks to karma, he ended up scoring the game-winning goal, much to the disgust of 18,118 people at the "Sports and Entertainment Capital of the World." Funny how things like that happen, huh? It'd be like you going to Barry Bonds and saying to him "here's a syringe... oh sorry, you already have enough" and then him going out to hit a walk-off grand slam into McCovey Cove to clinch the NL Pennant in game 7 over the Los Angeles Dodgers. But in this case, it was worth it just to be able to have one of the greatest American hockey players ever acknowledge something that I said to him, especially negatively. Roenick is a classy guy, and he's always giving pucks to the fans and talking with them, having fun with them. It's actually quite a shame that Kings fans boo him beecause he wasn't great with us. Thanks for the help. This week I am working on the Wistert Brothers. Looking at Al Wistert, I think his article could really benefit from two types of templates. He could use 1948 and 1949 championship team templates. Who would you go to for either of these things? Unfortunately, unlike the NBA and MLB or even the NCAA, we have not produced championship teams for the NFL. Is there a reason for this? I don't know why we don't have annual football templates, although I believe Chrisjnelson (talk · contribs) has tried to start this for the Pro Bowl templates. If you want to create the templates for that, and have the resources to do so (I don't know where to get the football players from) then feel free to take that task upon yourself. History of baseball team nicknames

Thanks for improving the somewhat-weaselly wording about the Angels. "No small amount" is a way of saying "kind of a large amount". But your way of putting it is quite sufficient. Meanwhile, I still think the Dodgers should follow the Angels' lead and rename themselves "The Brooklyn Dodgers of Los Angeles". Baseball Bugs ^{What's up, Doc?} 04:01, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

If the Dodgers were to change their name to that, I think that'd be pretty cool. I really would like it if they did because they are one of the most historic sports franchises ever, and they had great history in Brooklyn... if they were to call themselves the "Brooklyn Dodgers of Los Angeles" then that'd be a great way of incorporating their great history in New York with their history in Southern California.

There's a subtle difference between "not small" and "large". But the former can look weaselly. The Dodgers won't rename themselves. That would be a negative, as there are many who are still resentful that the Dodgers abandoned Brooklyn. But it's a good fantasy. :) Quick: Can you name the members of the defunct leagues, the National Association (1871-75) and the American Association (1882-91), which are operating today in MLB? Extra credit for naming the last operational ballparks which originated from (1) the Players League of 1890; (2) the Federal League of 1914-15; and (3) the NA and the AA. There is a specific part of the code for the NFL infobox that allows that to happen. Jmfangio (talk · contribs) was going to try to do the same for baseball before he got indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry. Chris is the one person I can think of who is familiar with the parser function used in the infobox codes, and I would assume that he would know how to do it if he wanted to. You need about a 3 paragraph lead for an internet era All-star professional athlete GA. You could add one summing up his statistical accomplishiments (x 50 goal seaons, y all-star games, z playoff appearances)

You might add an entire lead para about his playoff career if he did anything significant.

For GA you are going to have to give the article a tertiary resource feel. I.E., you are going to have to cite enough secondary sources that it sounds like everything you are saying is being said by a reliable source and that all facts are attributable or could be easily verified.
