Suggest merging Category:People of Philippine descent to Category:People of Filipino descent
Nominator's rationale: 'Filipino' is the adjective form used for all other cat and sub cat pages on Filipino people - see Category:Filipino people Mayumashu (talk) 21:32, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Rename. per nom. Filipino is the correct term to address us.--Lenticel (talk) 00:27, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

|:Category:Political prisoners and victims (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

Nominator's rationale: The problem with this category is that there is no objective definition of who qualifies as a political prisoner. The article has a list of "Examples of individuals believed (or claiming) to be political prisoners", which shows what the problem is. "Believed" by whom? I posted notices on both the article talk page and the category talk page asking for help developing an objective criteria or a better name for the category ("People called political prisoners"?) but have not gotten any helpful input. My preference is to create an objective standard, but if we can't do that then the alternative is to convert it to a list that can include attribution and dicussion of why individuals are included. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 20:42, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I support a delete but what about the by-nationality subcategories? Good Ol’factory (talk) 06:10, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • That's the problem. I think most editors would acknowledge that many folks in the Soviet Union, for example, were held as political prisoners. But this site, [1], claims that a there are four classes of political prisoners in modern Russia, including: those imprisoned for espionage, for tax evasion, for political and civic activism, and for religious affiliation. Where do we draw the line? Is every tax cheat a political prisoner? If we can't fix the category then the subcategories have the same problem. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 06:19, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • So shouldn't they also be nominated for deletion? There's little sense in deleting the parent category but keeping the by-nationality subcategories. I don't think we should delete the parent without doing the same to the subcategories. ... Good Ol’factory (talk) 06:53, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
        • As I said, my hope in bringing this up for discussion was to find a solution. Since none is forthcoming I don't see an alternative to deletion. I'll withdraw this entry and make a fresh request that covers all of the subcategories. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 19:25, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: keep. Angus McLellan (Talk) 17:52, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Category:Streets in Berlin (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Nominator's rationale: Do we really need this cat? Its principal purpose appears to "justify" move wars over ß. Several of the presentc contents have merge proposals, which would be better than the current nonsense. These are all marginally notable; if any survive, we could merge with Category:Berlin. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 19:50, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - why delete? Well-populated, and Category:Streets by city has 103 sub-cats. Johnbod (talk) 19:53, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep as well-populated part of overall scheme. If the category ever gets whittled down to a handful, then maybe it could go, but not when there are 31 articles in it. Good Ol’factory (talk) 06:21, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per Johnbod and Good Ol’factory. --Wulf Isebrand (talk) 19:42, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: Split into 2 categories. WoohookittyWoohoo! 06:08, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Suggest merging Category:Prisons and detention centres of Russia and Soviet Union to Category:Prisons in Russia
Nominator's rationale: Merge. at a minimum we would need to add 'the' before 'Soviet Union. But why not simply upmerge to the existing category that follows the form used for all other categories in Category:Prisons by country? Vegaswikian (talk) 18:45, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - What you're requesting would actually be a "downmerge" (if that makes sense). But there's a much larger issue here that pertains to a number of other categories as well: The Soviet Union was much more than Russia under another name -- it also included eg. Ukraine and Kazakhstan, and a bunch of other republics. I'm sure this very issue must have been discussed in other CFDs, but I don't know how they were resolved -- and I rather doubt that a general approach has been worked out. Hopefully somebody who's familiar with this can fill us in. Cgingold (talk) 05:51, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have not looked at the contents in detail. However if this is an issue, then it would need a manual split. The question is, is it wrong to rename and then move out any that don't belong? I left a message for a user who might have some advice. Vegaswikian (talk) 19:33, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I would split into Category:Prisons in the Soviet Union and Category:Prisons in Russia (the latter of which already exists), and recategorise articles as per their existence, i.e. if they didn't exist post-1917, then they belong only in Russian category, if they existed pre-1917 and post-1917 they belong in both categories, if they existed post-1917 but pre-1991 they only belong in Soviet category, and if only existed post-1991 they belong in Russia category. Prisons in the other 14 constituent republics of the USSR can be categorised in much the same way. Thats my 2к --Россавиа Диалог 19:48, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support split of Category:Prisons and detention centres of Russia and Soviet Union as described by Россавиа. I can support this given the logic provided. I will disclose that Россавиа was the editor I asked to comment on this since I knew that he was knowledgeable in this area. Vegaswikian (talk) 20:47, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: rename Category:World War II notable aircraft to Category:Individual aircraft of World War II. BencherliteTalk 08:40, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Propose renaming Category:World War II notable aircraft to Category:to be determined by consensus
Nominator's rationale: No category (or article for that matter) should contain the word notable in it's title, as being included in WP is in itself defining that it is notable to begin with. I'm not too sure on what this category should be renamed as, or even if it should be upmerged to the parent category. Lugnuts (talk) 17:22, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good to me. I support the wording of the rename. Lugnuts (talk) 07:42, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. Angus McLellan (Talk) 17:53, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Jewish Muslims (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

  • Delete (no merge necessary). I honestly have no idea why this was created, as it appears to be entirely redundant to the already-existing category, Category:Converts from Judaism to Islam, of which it is a sub-category. Perhaps its creator will enlighten us as to what he had in mind. Notified creator with {{subst:cfd-notify}} Cgingold (talk) 11:45, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per nom. 'Muslims of Jewish ethnicity' (what the creator apparently meant) = 'Converts from Judaism to Islam'. no merge is necessary because the 3 articles linked to this cat page be nominated are all already also linked to Category:Converts from Judaism to Islam Mayumashu (talk) 17:40, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete-per nom and Mayumashu, if those are already existing, this is a redundant category.--SRX--LatinoHeat 17:57, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete-As per nom Here because I'm here (talk) 18:28, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment In theory I'd think there'd be notable people of Jewish ancestry who'd always been Muslim. In pracyice there doesn't seem to be any such person in the category.--T. Anthony (talk) 02:12, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I agree with T. Anthony here. Are there no articles about people of Jewish ethnicity who were raised as Muslims? I find that hard to believe. The category distinction should in theory be one that's inherently sensible. Good Ol’factory (talk) 06:19, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I found two names that could possibly fit, but no more than that. Talal Asad's father was a Jewish convert to Islam. He wouldn't be a "Jewish Muslim" by Jewish law, but I think would kind of be by Islamic. Nasim Nisr of Hezbollah might fit it better than the convert category he is in now. His mother converted to Islam after marrying his Muslim father. It does not indicate if he ever deemed himself of the Jewish faith, except maybe as a way to enter Israel and spy.--T. Anthony (talk) 07:16, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have no real objection to having this category if there are in fact individuals who fit the sort of criteria suggested above. However, it would need to be renamed to perhaps Category:Muslims of Jewish ancestry (along with an explanatory headnote). I'm not sure if either of the examples referenced by T. Anthony would qualify. Maybe we could use some input from the two WikiProjects. Cgingold (talk) 12:04, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you want a category like that it should be Category:Muslims of Jewish descent, to conform to other dual nationality categories. No particular view on the main issue. Peterkingiron (talk) 23:03, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Propose renaming Category:European Super Cup Finals to Category:UEFA Super Cup
Nominator's rationale: Rename. The UEFA Super Cup is not a multi-round competition and therefore it doesn't technically have "finals". Also, since the competition is now known as the UEFA Super Cup, rather than the European Super Cup, the category's title should reflect this. – PeeJay 08:03, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Former city-states (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

  • Merge into Category:City states -- Try as I might, I'm unable to discern a real distinction between these two categories. Nearly all of the cities listed in Category:City states are, in fact, former city-states. (Aside from Monaco and Vatican City, are there any other current city-states?) I don't see any purpose in maintaining two separate but virtually indistinguishable categories. Notified creator with {{subst:cfd-notify}} Cgingold (talk) 07:39, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom. An additional category for the ones in the Holy Roman empire, not by any means as independent as others, would be a good idea too. Singapore would also count as a current city-state, but I think those 3 are the lot. Johnbod (talk) 19:47, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ah yes, Singapore -- I knew there had to be another! That makes three -- perhaps a sub-cat for current/modern-era city-states is warranted (if we could come up with the right name for it)? Cgingold (talk) 23:02, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom, though both Hong Kong and Macau would have qualified until a handful of years ago, and - depending on your definition - there's still Gibraltar, too. Grutness...wha? 01:17, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's a small-town state, I think - and technically one of the British overseas territories. Johnbod (talk) 01:20, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom. The overwhelming majority of them are "former". Dimadick (talk) 10:50, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Propose renaming Category:State Comptrollers to Category:State Comptrollers of Israel
Nominator's rationale: Rename. For disambiguation purposes. Main article is State Comptroller of Israel. State Comptroller is a DAB page where it links to articles about the Israeli position and to 4 state comptrollers for states in the United States. Notified creator with {{subst:cfd-notify}} Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:00, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
