Category:Composers who studied law (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Nominator's rationale: Delete. An intersection of profession (composer, for which the members are typically notable for) and side-pursuit (for which they are not). We don't otherwise categorize people by intersection of profession and what they happened to otherwise study or be interested in. We even usually delete categories that categorize people by the intersection of two professions, as in actor–singers, and this doesn't even go so far as to suggest these are "composer–lawyers"—they are not notable for being composers and separately notable for also being lawyers. Good Ol’factory (talk) 22:14, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Propose renaming Category:Football (soccer) hooliganism to Category:Football hooliganism or Category:Association football hooliganism
Nominator's rationale: For consistency with the main article (Football hooliganism) or the parent category (Category:Association football culture). I am not nominating the subcategory at this time as there are other issues associated with it which are best discussed separately. -- Black Falcon (talk) 22:00, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename to Category:Association football hooliganism. article pages go by WP:Common name but category pages do not, where there needs to be explicitedness. (Speculating that some users may not knowing the more formal name of 'football' is not a matter of concern for WP catting - it s one for those particular users to invest three seconds into.) The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: keep. — ξxplicit 19:58, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Propose merging Category:People of the Ottoman Empire to Category:Ottoman people
Nominator's rationale: Merge. Duplicate categories. "FOOian people" is the standard for Category:People by nationality, and Category:Ottoman people seems relatively unambiguous. The subcategories seem to use use "Ottoman FOOs". A reverse merge is also possible, though it would depart from the convention. Good Ol’factory (talk) 22:00, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • comment leaning to keep. Empires are tricky, especially when they melt down. They don't fit into the simple schemes of modern nation-states. Muhammad Ali of Egypt ruled his part of the Greater Ottoman Empire with such a degree of independence that any "Ottoman categorization", although technically correct, may mislead the unsuspecting reader into believing that he was, indeed, "a man of the Empire". "Ottoman people" seems particularly deceptive. In my opinion it should be limited to Ottoman Turks and exclude the Egyptians, Syrians, Slavs, Armenians etc. Hell, the Empire employed many thoroughbred Englishmen. Does Sir Adolphus Slade, Admiral of the Ottoman Empire, belong to "Ottoman people"? NVO (talk) 08:55, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per NVO. "Ottoman Jews" should not be in "Turkic peoples", and so on. The Ottoman empire, unlike some, recognised that its peoples had many nationalities as well as ethnicities - see Millet (Ottoman Empire). A reverse merge would make more sense - there are only 4 people in the main "Ottoman people" cat, of whom Ruhi Khalidi is a 19th century pro-Turkish Palestinian Arab who should not be there, and the others are much older. The set-up here seems no different from Category:People of the Mongol Empire, containing loads of Han Chinese in sub-cats. Johnbod (talk) 13:49, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. Based upon current usage, "Ottoman people" comprises Ottoman Turks or in one case an Ottoman Kurdish administrator. "People of the Ottoman Empire" is a much wider category. However, once this issue is settled, is will be necessary to review the articles placed in the "People of the Ottoman Empire" cat and, where possible, to allocate them to a more specific category. Davshul (talk) 18:55, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Either Keep or Reverse merge Category:Ottoman people is only a small category. If I remember correctly, Ottoman strictly refers only to the rulers - descendants of Osman. Peterkingiron (talk) 22:24, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Canadian musical performers (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Nominator's rationale: Delete. This category isn't useful and not needed by the Wikipedia:WikiProject Canadian music. I have removed it's children Category:Canadian musical groups, Category:Canadian musicians, Category:Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductees. They are elsewhere in the Category:Canadian music tree. This category was under used. It was never linked (as far a I can tell) to Category:Musical performers. I've been trying to think who should be in this "musical performers" cat. Each time I came up with a name, they could be placed into Category:Canadian musical groups or Category:Canadian musicians. Argolin (talk) 21:27, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps merge to Category:Mexican-American history and/or Category:Mexican-American organizations. -- Black Falcon (talk) 19:14, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Propose merging Category:Mexican American leaders to Category:American people of Mexican descent
Nominator's rationale: "Leaders" is not a good basis for categorization (note that Category:Leaders is a redlink), since anyone from a low-level management employee at a small firm to a head of state is a "leader". My guess, based on a review of the category's content, is that this category is intended primarily for activists and politicians: 38 of the 49 articles in this category are in Category:American politicians and Category:American activists or their subcategories. I am proposing an upmerge because deletion would remove 31 of the 49 articles from the American people of Mexican descent tree. Category:Eurovision Song Contest entrants of 2001 (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Nominator's rationale: Delete. These performers are well covered in the article and the year in which they were an entrant is not notable for most if not all of these. If this passes, then a mass nomination for the remaining categories will need to made. Note well that some of the members here are listed in multiple related categories adding to category clutter on the article pages. Vegaswikian (talk) 01:37, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - delete makes the extra claim that being a Eurovision Song Contest entrant is not defining, which I would dispute as it is an annual hullabaloo which goes on for months. Upmerge to Category:Eurovision Song Contest entrants makes the claim that year is not defining, but produces an enormous category. [see below] It is not usual to appear more than say twice in Eurovision, so clutter is not unbounded ... Category:Eurovision Song Contest entrants by nationality would be another way to go, but not incompatible with 'by year'. (Elena Paparizou is in 2 of these.) My own view is that 'Eurovision Song Contest entrant' is defining and subcatting by year is a sensible scheme. Occuli (talk) 09:35, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Propose merging Category:Isotope separation facilities of Manhattan Project (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) to the parent category Category:Manhattan Project
Nominator's rationale: The current name of this category sounds a little...odd. (And not just because it's missing "the"). And there's only three entries. Now, in some scenarios, three entries makes a category; in others, one can justify a category (in certain trees, anyway). In this one, however, I think we have a case of WP:OC, and these three articles would be better served in the parent category. - The Bushranger (talk) 03:32, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak keep. The main category Category:Manhattan Project has a lot of entries so this might be usfeful if looking for that particular sub-topic. I would classify it as harmless rather than OC; although it does need a 'the'. Twiceuponatime (talk) 07:58, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Films having post-credits scenes (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Nominator's rationale: Delete. This category was deleted in 2006, so this is re-creation of previously deleted material. Because it's been over 3 years, I thought a new discussion would be appropriate. This is a trivial and non-defining aspect of the films in question. In the past, we have deleted many categories that categorize media that happen to feature some quirk or another—songs using auto-tune, films featuring pugs, Copy Control albums, Films featuring the Devil, TV shows with voice over commentary, etc. This seems to be analogous to all these. • Delete. "Stingers" seem to be becoming the rule rather than the exception, among all the other reasons. - The Bushranger (talk) 03:27, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. No reason to overturn 2006 deletion decision, that I can see. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 14:46, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete As non-defining. Lugnuts (talk) 17:26, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep If there's a valid reason other than "we've done it before" I'd like to hear it. --uKER (talk) 11:15, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • How about my sentence in the nomination: "This is a trivial and non-defining aspect of the films in question."? Good Ol’factory (talk) 03:02, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Propose merging Category:Terms and concepts of the 2000s United States housing bubble (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) to the parent category Category:United States housing bubble
Nominator's rationale: The parent Category:United States housing bubble refers only the 2000s bubble. Having a variant "Terms and concepts of the ..." subcategory is either redundant, or stretching the category system too far. While many of the articles in this category are specific to the US bubble, several are more general (e.g. Mortgage loan, London Interbank Offered Rate, Moral hazard and, until I removed it just now, Recession). If people feel we need a glossary for the bubble, the category could be turned into a list, but my preference would be to upmerge then root out the superfluous bits. --Avenue (talk) 00:46, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: speedy delete criterion G4—re-creation of Category:Pakistani terrorists, which was previously deleted. Good Ol’factory (talk) 01:43, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Category:Terrorists from Pakistan (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Nominator's rationale: Recently created and filled up category by a new user. From little value as all articles are already well categorized and often problematic. The parent category was deleted following this Afd and i suggest to delete this new category as well for the same reasons. IQinn (talk) 23:34, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
