Category:1760s in California[edit]

The result of the discussion was: No consensus. Maybe there is a solution here, but from reading these discussions, I'm not seeing it. Is the solution a detailed category structure under Foo1 and the tree included under Foo2 as a subcategory at a high level? I have not closed this earlier, and no one has picked up the ball, since I expressed a preference in some earlier discussions. However I don't see how this close shows any bias based on those previous opinions. Vegaswikian (talk) 18:28, 20 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: The state of california did not exist in this time. it was part of Alta California, a different political entity. we dont have Category:1775 in the United States for the same reason. We should either consider merging with 1760's in Mexico, or if there are enough articles, create categories for 1760's in Alta California. Mercurywoodrose (talk) 22:15, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose deleting — California is used as a geographic place name for diverse studies, beyond a geopolitical name. In addition, there is much precedent in Wikipedia for [Cat:"Geographic subdivision's present name" by decade]; by year]; by century] being used far preceding its literal and geopolitical establishment. One can look just at those 'countries' who claimed a part of California within their domaines pre-statehood:
Category:Decades in Spain goes back to Category:1180s in Spain, though then and for nearly four more centuries a combo of numerous sovereign governance entities, with dramatic swings in predominant religions and gains and losses in European and global empire, that were not united under one crown and established as one entity named Spain until the 16th century. Before this the 'Spanish' Americas (including geographic California) and portions of the Iberian Peninsula were under the Crown of Castile, while European and other Iberian domaines were under the Crown of Aragon.
Category:Decades in Mexico goes back to the Category:1420s in Mexico, though it had been through various named world renowned and smaller indigenous civilizations, then the colonial era as New Spain under the Crown of Castile in 1521, before officially named Mexico with independence in 1821.
Category:Decades in Russia goes back to Category:1110s in Russia, though not known by that then and through many name changes since, it has only been called Russia (with various adjuncts) since 1547. Over the centuries before and since, through all its governance systems, and gains and losses of empire/iron curtain territories in Asia, Europe, and western North America, all 'by year/decade/century categories use the geographic Russia term. Even through the period named the Soviet Union, except for Category:1940s in the Soviet Union, it's still Russia by decade/year from the 1917 to 1991 existence of the USSR.
Category:Decades in the United States goes back to the Category:1700s in the United States, so that one can cross-compare the colonizing events and impacts on Native Americans by Great Britain, France, Russia, and Spain (and others), and evolving American expansionism, upon what became the present day U.S. section of the continent.
Oppose changing to [:Category:1760s in Alta California]. Alta California is only a historically accurate name for the latter Spanish colonial period 1804—1821, and Mexican period 1821—1846. However, physical Spanish colonial presence began in 1769. Furthermore, their presence ended in the northern S.F. Bay Area, with colonial Russians active from 1812 to 1842 just up the coast, who did not use the Spanish name.
Oppose changing to Category:1760s in New Spain . New Spain included the Caribbean Spanish West Indies and Asian Spanish East Indies. The 1760s (through the 1820s) in geographic California need a less globally sprawled decade category than [Category:1760s in New Spain] to be findable by the average wikipedia reader.—Look2See1 t a l k → 05:53, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Delete. WP:SMALLCAT There is only one city (Kingston) in Ulster County. There are not likely to be any more for a while. Daniel Case (talk) 15:39, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That assumes that Kingston is validly categorized as a "city in the New York metropolitan area". I dispute that. it's too far away from the city to be a realistic commute; as such Ulster residents do not have to pay the extra sales tax to support mass transit that Orange and Dutchess residents pay. Ulster residents also have to pay extra for their copies of the New York Times.

Once we eliminate one of the categories, I do not see that subcategorization scheme exceptional as applying. Daniel Case (talk) 00:25, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Rename (per nom, and then CFD again later) or Delete these unnecessary categories now. We already have Category:Armoured cars, Category:Military light utility vehicles, Category:Wheeled armoured personnel carriers and many others. Categorizing by level of armour isn't really workable as (1) many vehicles come in variants with different levels of armour, (2) many vehicles are armoured in parts (e.g. underneath against mines), (3) for many (old or new) vehicles we may not know what level of STANAG 4579 the armour is. It's better to categorize by broader classes of vehicle (truck, APC, IFV, tank etc) combined with country-of-origin and period - that way it's much easier to find things.
