Category:General elections by country[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: relisted to CFD 2013 Dec 1. (NAC) Armbrust The Homunculus 01:35, 1 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: This category was created to house parliamentary elections. These are variously referred to as general elections, legislative elections, parliamentary elections and federal elections. However, the first of these (the current name) is ambiguous, as in some countries "general election" refers to mixed elections - i.e. combined presidential and parliamentary elections (examples include Mozambique, the Philippines, Zimbabwe etc etc). Parliamentary elections is an unambiguous name, and hence is proposed as a preferable title. It also appears that this was the original category (it's two years older than the general election one), but was rather than bring it to CfD, an editor just emptied it into the General elections one.
One of the subcategories (Finnish general elections) is currently the subject of a CfD, but I will also nominate the following categories for renaming as part of this because the names of the categories do not match the names of the articles in them (the suggested names all match the article titles used for that country):
Number 57 20:03, 19 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep the parent as a container category. However the subcategories should be specific according to the title of the assembly. Peterkingiron (talk) 11:42, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • Container for what though? Parliamentary elections or mixed elections? Number 57 12:12, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The above is preserved as an archive of the discussion. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.

  • The category should be renamed because the team name is defunct. The team name lasted between 2006-10. This keeps consistency with team names that were once used and no longer are by a group. Further information is also being created in relevance to the topic.NYCWikiKid (talk) 03:42, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - per PRIMARYTOPIC. If the parent article changes name - through consensus determined WP:RM - then we can reconsider. GiantSnowman 10:51, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • In Favor. The main article (Fort Lauderdale Strikers) is in dire need of updating. It overlaps with two teams (though from a same club). The Miami FC needs their own history to be detailed while it can be mentioned in relation to the present Fort Lauderdale Strikers (2011-). Let's continue working on expanding the information. This category is in need of renaming and it will have a related article that I am currently working on. Thanks. NYCWikiKid (talk) 14:59, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As the nominator, you're permitted to !vote. Sir Sputnik (talk) 20:13, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well, they did change their name to Fort Lauderdale Strikers in 2011, but the concern I have with this page is Miami and Fort Lauderdale are two different cities. They're like, 23 miles apart from eachother. Not sure if that's a legit reason for leaving this category as it is, but personally I would find merging this cat to FTL Strikers a bit controversial if it was nominated for merging. – Michael (talk) 20:32, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Villages in the Borough of Ashford. Anyone can purge, if neccessary. (NAC) Armbrust The Homunculus 01:04, 1 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Delete or rename. "Around" is vague. Most of these are in the Borough of Ashford (I think the only exception is Sellindge) and most villages in the district are included, so maybe remove that article and rename as Category:Villages in Ashford (borough) to match the parent category or Category:Villages in the Borough of Ashford. Peter James (talk) 19:24, 19 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • REname per nom. Purge as needed. This is currently a POV-based category, which cannot be allowed. Peterkingiron (talk) 11:44, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • This category page is vital and should not be deleted as the second user is suggesting. It is important that it be renamed to the suggestion I made in order to create awareness of the year and the league to which the players are being referred to as this set was part of an outdoor league. The team would play in the same year in an indoor league with a variant roster. Check the next entry below.NYCWikiKid (talk) 03:42, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • In Favor of renaming. Peter, just to clarify this quote "WE should not have a new category when a club changes its league", this is contrary to other teams that have a history of being in different leagues (e.g. Category:Seattle Sounders (1994–2008) and Category:Seattle Sounders FC). So far, here in Wikipedia, we give each team their own category. There were two Minnesota Strikers. One, an outdoor team in the NASL, and the other an indoor team in the MISL. That is a major difference and the reason why these categories are being improved. The category should definitely be renamed. Thanks. NYCWikiKid (talk) 15:05, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - the League is sufficient disambiguation, and even that may not be necessary. No objection to merging as proposed above. Sir Sputnik (talk) 20:29, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - per Primary Topic argument. Disambiguation provided by the specification of league seems sufficient. Fenix down (talk) 11:27, 23 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • As clearly stated above, this page should not be deleted, and should be renamed as I propose. It is important to differentiate between the leagues and style of play the club participated in as in 1984 they were in the NASL (an outdoor league) while between 1984-88 they were in the MISL (an indoor league) while using the same name.NYCWikiKid (talk) 03:42, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • This should most definitely not be renamed to "Orlando Lions players". That would highly be undefined as there were several incarnations of teams with that name. This category in question can eventually be linked to an umbrella category named "Orlando Lions players", where different teams have players listed within their own category as the one above. This category primarily being discussed should be renamed to what I suggest as this set of players from the ASL/APSL are from 1988-90. This was the year that this particular franchise played. Please let's get the facts straight.NYCWikiKid (talk) 03:42, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No you cannot link this to an umbrella category because that violates WP:OVERCAT, so like I said, it should be renamed to "Orlando Lions players. – Michael (talk) 04:12, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What?! I'll say it once more. There are several incarnations of the Orlando Lions. Each with a different team and franchise. They each get their own category as they are distinct. However, they also belong to one group. Furthermore, this particular group of Orlando Lions also share heritage with another group - in this case the Fort Lauderdale Strikers who they merged with in 1990-91. Really, you should just stop and contact me and we can speak on good terms. NYCWikiKid (talk) 04:31, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Again, this should not be deleted. It should follow the suggestion I am making in order to create consistency with the years of the team names that were used. NYCWikiKid (talk) 03:42, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not saying it should be deleted, I'm saying it should be left alone because this is the lone topic and distinction is unnecessary. – Michael (talk) 04:02, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • The name of the team is no longer in use. Placing the years is synonymous with other defunct teams. Also they are part of a distinct club. The years are an indicator of the years the club used this particular name.NYCWikiKid (talk) 04:31, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • This information should not be merged. These are different team names (Miami Gatos and Miami Toros) that need distinction. The suggestion I made should be followed through to create clarity of the season the team played.NYCWikiKid (talk) 03:42, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it should be merged because despite the fact that they're different team names, it's the same franchise that existed for five years. You can't used distinction for every single team that is defunct. For example, in Basketball, Seattle SuperSonics began their first season of existence in 1967 and played their final season in 2008 before ridiculously relocating to Oklahoma City and becoming the Oklahoma City Thunder. Do we use distinction on the Sonics page? No, because this was the only team with the name. Why are the Miami Toros any different? – Michael (talk) 03:59, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • With all due respect you clearly do not know all the facts about the Fort Lauderdale Strikers club (I am not using sarcasm). The team was continuous between 1970-1984 in the NASL under different names from Gatos, to Toros, to Ft.L Strikers, to Minnesota Strikers. Owner continued club in Minnesota with an indoor team until 1988. Then moved back to Ft, Lauderdale with an outdoor team for the ASL. I won't go further. I am only asking that you refrain from making suggestions about deleting or renaming of this topic which you don't have full knowledge of, and simply contact me. Let's have a friendly conversation. Thank you NYCWikiKid (talk) 04:31, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • In Favor of renaming. Like other teams that have a history of being in different leagues (e.g. Category:Seattle Sounders (1994–2008) and Category:Seattle Sounders FC) or being renamed or rebranded (Montreal Expos and Washington Nationals; New York Highlanders and New York Yankees), the Miami Gatos are not the Miami Toros, though they share direct lineage and are part of the same club (the Fort Lauderdale Strikers). That is a major difference and the reason why these categories are being improved. The category should definitely be renamed. Thanks. NYCWikiKid (talk) 15:05, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Merge - per Michael. Fenix down (talk) 11:30, 23 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • The old category can be speedily deleted per WP:CSD#G7 (request by only editor of the page). The new category may be too small, unless there's a guideline or precedent for categories such as this. Peter James (talk) 19:42, 19 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • Hi Peter. Thanks for the assistance. I am the author of both. I have gone ahead and added the WP:CSD#G7 criteria to the lesser. The latter is actually being expanded. Cheers NYCWikiKid (talk) 00:56, 20 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Speedy merge (or reverse merge): obvious duplicates. Peterkingiron (talk) 11:55, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • These are not duplicates as it sounds like a negative intention.
  • I created both. The first was a typo as I already stated. The new version is the corrected title for the category. Regardless, Category:Fort Lauderdale Strikers rivalry should be deleted. Thanks. NYCWikiKid (talk) 15:21, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Rename. These two categories seem to be for different ranks of the Unified Sports Classification System of the USSR and Russia. The plurals Master/Masters and Sport/Sports should be made consistent. Tim! (talk) 09:27, 19 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Definitely delete Master of Sports category, probably delete Honoured Master category. Neither classification appears to be independently notable enough to sustain a separate article and both appear to conflict with WP:AWARD. Jerry Pepsi (talk) 00:47, 20 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
