Category:Australian labor union officials convicted of crimes[edit]

The result of the discussion was: upmerge to all parents (where necessary). – Fayenatic London 16:45, 2 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This category is a clear example of Overcategorization, being small with very limited potential for growth and also a narrow intersection of two existing categories - Category:Australian trade unionists and Australian criminals. Also, the category is anomalous when you compare with the current scheme for categorising Australian people by occupation, which does not generally include whether they have criminal convictions, see Category:Australian lawyers or Category:Australian corporate directors. Incidentally, the use of the term 'labor union official' is incorrect in Australian English. Warrenjs1 (talk) 00:13, 23 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Keep I don't agree with nominator's comments. Corruption in trade unions in Australia is wide spread and w. Recently the Govt has set up the Royal Commission to inquire and report seeRoyal Commission into trade union governance and corruption. The category will definitely grow. If the title is incorrect as per the Australian English please feel free to suggest the correct one.Shyamsunder (talk) 20:11, 23 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Support, on the basis there is not even a Category:Australian trade union leaders and the poorly sourced, largely off-topic Royal Commission into trade union governance and corruption article doesn't demonstrate there is widespread corruption in Australian trade unionism. My one question would be whether Category:American labor union officials convicted of crimes should have been included in this nomination (though is a larger category). Sionk (talk) 23:48, 23 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support/Triple Upmerge To all parents. 3 articles is not enough to convince me that a separate national sub-category is needed. RevelationDirect (talk) 19:23, 24 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Upmerge -- If kept "labor" should become "labour" or better still "trades", since Australia uses British English. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:54, 26 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment The tree starting from Category:Criminals by occupation is entirely focused on non-private sector occupations. This should be re-balanced to better reflect crime and corruption across occupational sectors. SFB 20:18, 27 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete last rung problem; too focused. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 01:33, 29 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge--Ymblanter (talk) 07:35, 13 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Following on from discussion here, Jewish Australian sportspeople is not a topic of wide study that merits a category. I have been unable to locate any material which studies Jewish people in a sports context that is specific to Australia and not part of broader study of either Australian Jews or Jewish sportspeople in general (the parent categories here). Similarly, I have never heard Italian ancestry discussed in an Australian sport-specific context. It's simply not a topic of study, hence why global search results simply mirror the content of that Wikipedia category. Compare these two categories with the valid category we have in Category:Indigenous Australian sportspeople - a topic which has generated much study in itself [1][2] and spawned many organisations related to this matter.
The final nomination is an upmerge for the parent which, in the event of merging of the other two, would only contain one category. SFB 18:11, 22 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Albums are not written. No corresponding category, either. Richhoncho (talk) 13:27, 22 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete I have reviewed all the albums and left only the ones for which Whiting wrote more than one or two songs on the whole album. This has left us with zero articles in the category. We have Category:Songs written by Ant Whiting for the song writing credits and Category:Albums produced by Ant Whiting for the production credits. This category adds nothing to those two already well-applied categories. SFB 18:41, 22 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - speedy even. Not an established category scheme as albums are produced not written. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 22:36, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Modified Volkswagen vehicles[edit]

The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Volkswagen Beetle modifications and create parent Category:Modified vehicles. – Fayenatic London 13:35, 2 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: per WP:NON-DEFINING and WP:OVERLAPCAT. I don't think the original manufacturer is defining for products that were modified with after-market changes. In this case, everything in this category is a modified Volkswagen Beetle and is also in Category:Volkswagen Beetle, which I created before I noticed this category. There is no similar category for other automakers. RevelationDirect (talk) 01:05, 21 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Note: Notified the category creator and this discussion has been included in Wikipedia:WikiProject Automobile. – RevelationDirect (talk) 01:27, 21 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, but maybe rename: One of these rationales is just WP:OTHERSTUFFDOESNTEXIST; there was never any category of anything that was similar to any other category of anything until we created them, and we would never create categories except in big groups if this rationale were actually applicable. OVERLAPCAT is not even remotely similar to this case ("Category:Volkswagen vehicles with four wheels" would be such an example). I tried to get behind NON-DEFINING (I started drafting this as a "weak support"), but on closer inspection, I can't. Being both a case of vehicle modification in general, and a Volkswagen mod in particular, are in fact both defining characteristics of the items in the category (or at least the ones I'm familiar with - it's possible one or another is miscategorized). It's not categorization by manufacturer of the original vehicle, it's categorization by the common name of the vehicle group to which the mods apply; the sort of name led to by those criteria just coincidentally is the same. This case is a good example of a subcat, because there are so many mods that fit this category; it's an unusually popular kind of mod, and has been for over 40 years. Other subcats of Category:Vehicle modification (vans, motorcycles) are more general, but a) one for cars would be OVERLAPCAT, and b) if there were lots of articles about Ford mods in particular for some reason, that would be a valid subcat, and even if there were quite a number of articles in the motorcycles category, and a notable number of them were about Harley-Davidson mods in particular, it would be reasonable to create a subsubcat for that. There is no "do not name categories after companies or product lines" principle at CfD. The sheer number of VW entries will simply inspire someone to subcategorize them again later, if the cat. were deleted. If it were, the articles should be categorized in Category:Vehicle modification as well as Category:Volkswagen Beetle, if applicable (some may be non-Beetles). If none are non-Beetles and the cat. is kept, it could be renamed Category:Volkwagen Beetle modification to match the parent better, or Category:Volkswagen modification otherwise.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  09:44, 21 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the explanation of why you created the category. If this is deleted, I agree that the contents should be upmerged to Category:Vehicle modification (they are all already in Category:Volkswagen Beetle). RevelationDirect (talk) 12:43, 21 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Al-Qaeda[edit]

The result of the discussion was: Impossible - the most we could do towards this would be to add a {{lowercase}} to the category pge; however, pages categorized there would still have the current version of the name. Of course, this doesn't prevent similar nominations where "Al-Queda" isn't at the beginning. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 22:08, 23 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Rename. the definite article "al-" is always lowercase, unless beginning a sentence. Article titles are in sentence case according to WP:TITLEFORMAT and the Manual of Style for Arabic. This issue has caused great trouble with unknowledged editors persisting in adding Al-Qaeda mid sentence but who can blame them when, even though the main Wikipedia article is titled al-Qaeda, categories state "Al-Qaeda" on a seemingly consistent basis. I suggest a similar move of: Category:Al-Qaeda activities, Category:Al-Qaeda facilities, Category:Al-Qaeda members, Category:Organizations affiliated with Al-Qaeda, Category:Al-Qaeda safe houses, Category:Works about Al-Qaeda‎, Category:Al-Qaeda activities in Iraq, Category:Al-Qaeda attacks, Category:Al-Qaeda propaganda, Category:Al-Qaeda propagandists, Category:Al-Qaeda members by nationality, Category:Al-Qaeda members by role‎, Category:Assassinated Al-Qaeda members. Similar issues may be raised with many if not all articles containing the Arabic definite article, al. Pinging P-123 GregKaye 09:16, 22 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment/not really doable through a rename. For the head category and any category that begins with "Al-Qaeda", "renaming" it is pointless and in fact not doable: the first letter after the colon in a category name is always capitalized. The nomination is therefore suggesting that we should rename a category to its current name. (Click on the nominated category and the proposed category—you will end up in the same place.) The only thing that could be done to fix this is to employ a Template:DISPLAYTITLE command so that it appears as a lower-case "a" from within the category. But from the exterior of the category (i.e., from viewing any page apart from the category page itself), the "A" will always be capitalized. Good Ol’factory (talk) 09:33, 22 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Speedy close as non-relevant, technically impossible discussion. Note in the url that al-Qaeda is actually at Al-Qaeda. @Gregkaye: I don't see any possible objection to the use of DISPLAYTITLE in the category space so please proceed. SFB 18:26, 22 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Speedy close technically impossible. Wikipedia does not support lowercase first letters for pagenames. If you want to rename other categories, then nominate them for renaming. Categories not tagged with the renaming template should not be renamed, as they have not been nominated. Even CFDS has a template to tag catgories for renaming. -- 67.70.35.44 (talk) 05:19, 23 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • Oh? Take a look at the category now. I may close this as addressed. Vegaswikian (talk) 18:41, 23 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
      • It's not addressed, Gregkaye, the nominator, specifically points out in a comment above to SFB, Category:Organizations affiliated with Al-Qaeda, Category:Works about Al-Qaeda‎, and Category:Assassinated Al-Qaeda members, which was the point I was addressing ("other categories") about not being tagged. -- 67.70.35.44 (talk) 22:06, 23 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete without prejudice to re-creating if more content is created. – Fayenatic London 13:04, 2 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:OVERLAPCAT. The CBD in Montgomery County is The Woodlands, which has Category:Companies based in The Woodlands, Texas to list companies based there. The only thing in this category is that Woodlands sub-category and most counties don't have a company category. No objection to recreating the category later if some content appears later, which is likely considering how fast the area is developing. RevelationDirect (talk) 04:00, 22 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Keep Southern Star Brewing Company is based in Conroe. WhisperToMe (talk) 05:19, 22 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I normally go with 5 articles to create a category but that is my own guideline since there isn't an official fixed number. I really have no objection to the concept of a county-level cat so I'll defer to other editors if they think one article and one sub-category will aid navigation.RevelationDirect (talk) 15:19, 22 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Albanian Sufis. – Fayenatic London 13:18, 2 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Rename. The category is being used to tag articles on Albanian people that belong to Bektashi Order, which is a tariqa of Sufism, not Shia Islam which is one major branch of Islam. Moreover, Bektashi is one of the recognized religions in Albania and other Albanian populated countries in Balkans, together with Islam, Roman Catholicism, Orthodoxy. There are no Shias in Albania. Whoever created the category didn't do it on purpose, but the mistake is huge. Mondiad (talk) 01:06, 22 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I just saw there is such a category. The problem is that Suffi would include both Bektashi and Halveti order, which is less spread but still present and cannot be unified with Bektashi. (Other Suffi orders are not present in Albania, so don't make a difference in this case). Can we have both categories Category:Albanian Bektashis and Category:Albanian Sufis as a broader one? Mondiad (talk) 01:45, 23 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It sounds as if the nom should go ahead, with it and a Halveti category, becoming sub-cats of the sufi one. Peterkingiron (talk) 17:14, 26 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge to Category:Albanian Sufis. There is so little content that having a national Bektashis subcategory wouldn't be very helpful at all. We haven't even started Category:Bektashis yet. That category is worth having, but I doubt it would currently be large enough to warrant national subdivision at this time. SFB 03:11, 18 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: Delete. Both articles are in the buildings by place tree which eliminates the need to upmerge. Vegaswikian (talk) 18:07, 29 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Delete. Following the recent merger of "Defunct prisons in COUNTY" Wales categories, it is clear these two "Prisons in COUNTY" categories are not needed, per WP:SMALLCAT. They have only one article in each and both these articles are already in Category:Defunct prisons in Wales, so no further merger is required. Sionk (talk) 00:14, 22 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
