The result of the discussion was: Withdrawn as moot. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 18:44, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Current Requests for adminship[edit]

Nominator's rationale: Delete. Appears to be obsolete. The template {{RfA tally}} that used to populate this category no longer does so. But I'm posting here instead of proposing to speedy it, just in case there is something going on that I've missed. R'n'B (call me Russ) 20:26, 12 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I wish you asked me before nominating this, it is obsolete and I don't object to deletion. I have deleted it per WP:CSD#G7. I think this could be closed. Chillum 20:35, 12 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: rename. MER-C 07:42, 21 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Consistency with other portal categories. DexDor (talk) 20:25, 12 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support All categories are for grouping pages, so this name is redundant. SFB 17:40, 17 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: rename. MER-C 07:42, 21 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Consistency with how portal categories are usually named (e.g. see Category:Germany portal). DexDor (talk) 20:08, 12 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. As the creator of these portal categories, I'm very happy to rename them in line with the English Wiki convention. Just wouldn't like to see them deleted outright. Cheers. --Bermicourt (talk) 21:13, 12 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment it would make more sense to rename all the other categories to match these two, since it clearly indicates this is a category for a Wikipedia portalspace portal, and not some other kind of portal -- 65.94.43.89 (talk) 06:18, 15 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
For info: There are over 900 categories on en-wp named in the "Category:Foo portal" format. DexDor (talk) 17:23, 15 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
But it's not a bad point and we have bots that can handle mass renaming. I'm chilled either way. --Bermicourt (talk) 14:45, 17 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: keep. MER-C 13:20, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Delete. There are 54 countries in Africa. Let's opt for [Category:Writers of Nigerian descent]; [Category:Writers of South African descent]; based on "nationality." (We do not currently have [Category:Writers of Asian descent], [Category:Writers of European descent], [Category:Writers of North American descent], Category:Writers of South American descent] as container categories; with the sole exception of Australia which is a continent and a country). To include "national" countries simply because they are predominately black is WP:OR. Can each writer of Jamaican or Haitian descent be sourced to confirm African descent? Let's stop creating these categories surrounding "African" descent and treating the entire continent as a single country and ethnicity. Africa is the most diverse continent in the world. [1] By creating these categories, we skip over a large portion of more accurate research, in favor of what's familiar, a rash generalisation of a group of people judged solely by the color of their skin. If this category must remain, opt to remove all national countries from it. See former category: Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2013 February 9#Category:Dominican Republic people of African descent. Savvyjack23 (talk) 19:59, 12 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep -- This is a contaner category for categories for people outside Africa, probably with no specifically known descent. If anything is to be attacked it should be the subcategories. If they disappear, we would be left with an empty category, which would be removed as a matterof course. Peterkingiron (talk) 14:07, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Clear Keep - As the category's creator, my intent was very simply to provide an umbrella category - a container category -- for already-existing (sub)-categories for writers in various countries who are of African descent. There's not much more to say about it.
I do take offense at Savvyjack23's ludicrous remark, "a rash generalisation of a group of people judged solely by the color of their skin", which is clearly intended as an accusation of racism. Nothing could be further from the truth. In the future, you really ought to restrain yourself from making comments of that ilk. Cgingold (talk) 11:24, 17 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Also, quite a sizeable portion of Africans are not black! SFB 17:42, 17 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep This article fits the scope of WikiProhect African diaspora, which does not limit itself to "black" Africans. In many cases the descent predates any of the modern African states and even the ethnic group/s is uncertain. It is a useful umbrella category. Dimadick (talk) 20:39, 17 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • As long as we have subcats such as Category:French writers of African descent then this category should be kept. DexDor (talk) 06:03, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge. – Fayenatic London 21:46, 21 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:OC#SHAREDNAME DexDor (talk) 06:03, 12 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Note: There is already such a dab page. DexDor (talk) 21:46, 12 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete -- We have nothing but a dab-page and two national categories, which seem to have nothing ion common but the name. Peterkingiron (talk) 14:09, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
