Very ancient decade categories[edit]

Note: For the record, implementation required changes to the templates {{BirthdecadeBC}} and {{DeathdecadeBC}}. – Fayenatic London 15:09, 16 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
more decades
Nominator's rationale: rename per WP:SMALLCAT, next to the births and deaths subcategories there is mostly only one article in each category, namely an eponymous decade article (like 1190s BC). The subcategories don't have to merged, they are contained in the century categories anyway. This nomination goes approximately up to the point in time when separate year articles are emerging (the oldest one is 817 BC but there are large gaps between them in the beginning). Nominator's rationale: This category is ambiguous. The creator wants it to mean Japanese produced shows that involve high schools, but it could also mean shows about Japanese high schools. Could this also be a trivial intersection like Japanese redheads or shows with Japanese student council presidents? AngusWOOF (barksniff) 17:26, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There are 5 other similar categories here: Category:High school television series. In these cases, "high school" indicates a genre. It's not a problem for Category:American action television series, for example. Maybe a renaming is in order: Japanese-made high school television series, High school television series made in Japan, Japanese high school television series (genre), etc. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fuddle (talkcontribs) 17:41, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Is high school actually a genre or simply a setting. If it's the latter it may be better to use something like x country TV series taking place in a high school. Though if this is deemed to be something that should be deleted we should also include the other country categories mentioned.--76.65.42.75 (talk) 04:57, 22 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • I wouldn't be opposed to it given that just about anyone can call it a "high school film" if the film contains a high school somewhere in there. Would Carrie (1976 film) be a "high school film" because the final scene takes place in a high school? In both these instances the category is too broad. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 16:49, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, but there's an expectation of restraint when categorizing articles. When Harry Met Sally is not listed under Category:Films set in restaurants, for example. (I'm not advocating keep or delete, just playing devil's advocate) Fuddle (talk) 17:05, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Armenian people of Iranian descent[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: keep. (non-admin closure) Marcocapelle (talk) 05:46, 26 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Iranian emigrants to Armenia is not the same as Armenian people of Iranian descent nor related in the same way. If the person is Armenian of Iranian descent, then you can add the person to the category. But an emigrant does not necessarily count. Hovhannes Karapetyan 13:31, 18 August 2017 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hovhannesk (talkcontribs)
  • Keep. Look at the very extensive category trees. In every case the "X emigrants to Y" category is in the "Y people of X descent" category. This is the standard categorisation model and has been used in hundreds of cases. Otherwise people tend to get confused as to which category to put people in and frequently put them in either both or the wrong one. Remember the category trees refer to nationality as well as ethnicity. There is no American ethnicity at all, for instance (except Native American), but take a look at Category:People of American descent; it merely means people whose ancestors were born in America or who were themselves born in America but have emigrated, just as this category means Armenian people whose ancestors were born in Iran or who were themselves born in Iran (even if they are actually of Armenian ethnicity). No reason to bugger up a long-established tree for the sake of pedantry. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:35, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Preferably Keep -- This is an awkward case, since Armenians are (and long have been) a significant ethnic minority in Iran and several other Middle Eastern countries. The present Armenia is merely what was Russian Armenia. The one person has a name ending -ian, implying that he is an ethnic Armenian from the minority in Iran. By convention we use national descent, i.e. here, born in Iran. It would be incorrect to categorise him as of Farsi descent. Peterkingiron (talk) 13:40, 20 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Non-notable category of high school sports team players. Overly specific and possibly promotional. alphalfalfa(talk) 08:35, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Upmerge to the alumni category and (if necessary) a sport category. We should discourage splits of school alumni by occupation unless they can be very well populated. Peterkingiron (talk) 13:43, 20 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • DElete -- The sole content is 3 Phillipines divisions which cased to exist upon the US surrender in 1942, but were apparently quickly re-established by US military, possibly as an insurgent force. The 1942 reestablishment cat is also parented by a 1942 establishment category, which seems sufficient. Certain British regiments were disbanded in 18th century and later re-established with the same number, not necessarily with any continuity. An establishment date-category should be ample. Nominator's rationale: As per WP:CfD and WP:OCEPON precedents, other existing/more appropriate categorization by works is sufficient in this case without need of eponymous category. --IJBall (contribstalk) 03:51, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete No need for this eponymous category. Everything there is already linked in the bio article. Geraldo Perez (talk) 04:00, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment China Anne McClain is a 19-years-old actress and singer, professionally active since 2005. I am not certain whether she has enough related articles for an eponymous category. Dimadick (talk) 19:50, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
