The result of the discussion was: delete. (non-admin closure) Marcocapelle (talk) 09:03, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Eponymous overcategorization for just one newspaper and its associated television station. This is not enough spinoff content to warrant a category for them -- it would be fine if there were a lot of spinoff content here, but for just two articles that already crosslink each other anyway it's just a navigationally unnecessary WP:SMALLCAT. The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:History of Samos. There was other content here besides the eponym itself that needed to be moved. Bearcat (talk) 00:01, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: delete per WP:SMALLCAT, only contains the eponymous article and a subcategory. No need to merge, I have already added the article to Category:History of Samos. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:01, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: delete per WP:SMALLCAT, the categories only contain the eponymous article and a subcategory. No need to merge, I have already added the articles to Category:Subdivisions of Kievan Rus'. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:31, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Ukrainian medical doctors[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: no consensus. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 06:49, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: To align with the subcategories Category:Ukrainian women physicians, Category:Ukrainian physicians by century and Category:20th-century Ukrainian physicians (and Wikipedia Commons). While "medical doctors" is the term used in many English-speaking and British or ex-British countries, this does not apply to the Ukraine. Hugo999 (talk) 00:35, 18 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The vast majority of Category:Physicians by nationality are physicians. We should be consistent unless there is good reason not to be, otherwise we are giving the impression that physicians and medical doctors are in some way to be distinguished from each other. Rathfelder (talk) 14:13, 17 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
earlier discussion at CFD/S
  • Comment Will move to full discussion; as I recall the earlier "medical doctors" versus "physicians" was about retaining "medical doctors" categories for British and ex-British countries but that hardly applies to the Ukraine. Hugo999 (talk) 23:54, 17 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. "Medical doctors" is more known term in post-Soviet states than "physicians". 91.124.81.152 (talk) 16:18, 18 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    [citation needed]. -- Black Falcon (talk) 20:18, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong oppose -- This is applying an American definition of "physician" to other parts of the world, where Physician is a hospital speciality, not a general practitioner. Peterkingiron (talk) 17:41, 18 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Physician is a much older term than medical doctor, and we have built an enormous category tree on it. We cant use the term doctor because it is ambiguous. Neither "Medical doctors" nor "physician" is a Ukrainian word. Rathfelder (talk) 19:30, 18 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. "Physicians" is the parent category. A number of countries use "Medical Doctor" rather than "Physician" as the local usage (as previously decided) but none in continental Europe apart from Gibraltar or in ex-Soviet Central Asia (the "stans"). Neighbours of Ukraine all use "Physician"; Belarus, Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania & Russia. PS: A few countries not ex-British use Medical Doctors not Physicians: the Dominican Republic, Iceland, Panama and Saudi Arabia. Hugo999 (talk) 21:50, 18 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, Physician is the main article and I have seen no evidence so far that former Soviet states clearly prefer British English over American English. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:01, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support to match Category:Physicians, per Marcocapelle. -- Black Falcon (talk) 20:18, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:44, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: The articles in this category (apart from the eponymous article* which may need to be upmerged) are articles about corporations, buildings, TV channels etc for which having a weather beacon (for a period) is non-defining - the articles (e.g. Näsinneula) don't generally mention the weather beacon in the lede. Note: the article  contains a list. DexDor (talk) 12:14, 18 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
and Weather Machine. DexDor (talk) 20:35, 18 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Many of the articles in the category aren't about buildings. DexDor (talk) 20:35, 18 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Years and decades in Castile[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge/delete per nominator. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 19:39, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Example
The full list of nominated categories can be found in this section.
Nominator's rationale: merge per WP:SMALLCAT, mostly just one article per category. This is follow-up on a previous nomination that was supported in principle but considered to be too broad so that country specific details could not be discussed. So here is a first separate country nomination. Marcocapelle (talk) 09:19, 18 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support but limited to Castile, but at this stage merge to decade in Iberia (covering Portugal, Castile, Aragon and a few other states) and see what that looks like, rather than straight to a Europe category. We can then see what that looks like before merging further. Peterkingiron (talk) 17:37, 18 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Presumably you are then okay with merging to years in Europe? Creating an entirely new category tree for decades in Iberia is quite a different issue. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:20, 18 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Relisted from CFD 2018 February 18 to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:09, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Quibble withdrawn -- Sampling suggests that in the medieval period years in Europe (and even an unsplit "years" category) are unlikely to get overpopulated. HoweverI still wonder whether there should not be a third upmerge target: Category:1120s in Iberia (defined as what is now Spain and Portugal). If this proposed tree proves to have a lot of underpopulated members, we can then delete it. Peterkingiron (talk) 21:24, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • Comment I would be opposed to the creation of Category:1120s in Iberia. Geographic land forms ought not to have a "by year" tree structure. The same goes for the Italian peninsula and the islands of Great Britain, Guinea and Timor. A "by century" structure which mainly draws on the categories of the various political entities within that geographic land form should be adequate. Laurel Lodged (talk) 13:40, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • Oppose "years in Iberia" - per Laurel Lodged.GreyShark (dibra) 14:01, 16 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support all as proposed by nom. Laurel Lodged (talk) 10:12, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Final Fantasy locations[edit]

The result of the discussion was: merge. (non-admin closure) Marcocapelle (talk) 09:06, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Seems like it will be a WP:SMALLCAT for the foreseeable future, category is unnecessary. ZXCVBNM (TALK) 16:12, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge - Category was bigger many years ago, but is unlikely to ever expand beyond 2 articles anytime in the forseeable future. --PresN 13:10, 27 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Both articles are in categories related to Final Fantasy, so just the one merge seems fine. --Izno (talk) 16:11, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Works about knees[edit]

The result of the discussion was: delete (non-admin closure). Marcocapelle (talk) 09:10, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This is a silly category, containing only one sub-cat and a single article, which really doesn't belong in the category, IMO. Just because the word "knee" is in the name of the movie doesn't mean it's "about knees", ferkrisake. Anomalous+0 (talk) 14:11, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete Fails WP:NONDEF. Frankly it seems impossible for a work to be "about knees" unless it's some kind of educational documentary, and I doubt any of those are notable.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 16:15, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete (non-admin closure). Marcocapelle (talk) 09:19, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This is a superfluous and completely unnecessary category. (It is comprised entirely of one subcategory, Category:Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.) In the event that there is ever another atomic bombing -- perish the thought -- it can be resurrected at that time. (Assuming, of course, that we don't need resurrecting, ourselves... ) Anomalous+0 (talk) 09:04, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. Bearcat (talk) 00:07, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Being on this trail is non-defining for many/most/all of the places in the category (e.g. Bahia Honda Key and Lemon Bay).  Siesta Beach doesn't mention the trail and Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden doesn't mention birds. Note: Great Florida Birding Trail and List of sites in the South section of the Great Florida Birding Trail may need to be upmerged.
For info: Many places-on-trail categories have previously been deleted - e.g. CFD from January. DexDor (talk) 07:17, 26 February 2018 (UTC) (Adjusted DexDor (talk) 08:34, 3 March 2018 (UTC))[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete (non-admin closure). Marcocapelle (talk) 09:22, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Trivial category. Wikipedia is not a travel guide; the presence of a ticket exchange window at a station is not significant enough to justify a separate category. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 07:15, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: This is a really trivial category and its inclusion in indie music seems pretty ropy at best... ―Justin (koavf)TCM 06:30, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per Ilovetopaint; the parent Category:Indie music has been replaced with Category:DIY culture. —Bruce1eetalk 13:55, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete – it is not defining. I have never seen a policy suggesting that presence in an infobox amounts to 'defining'. Oculi (talk) 18:25, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - in the sample of articles I looked at it was clearly non-defining e.g. not mentioned prominently in the lead. In some cases the songs on the album were recorded in a variety of places and/or (e.g. OK Computer) the definition of "home studio" appears to have been interpreted loosely. Restrict and purge might be an alternative to deletion. DexDor (talk) 06:44, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Restricting to albums primarily recorded in a home studio is reasonable, but I don't see how a manor doesn't count (so long as somebody actually uses it as a home).--Ilovetopaint (talk) 21:28, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge both. (non-admin closure) Marcocapelle (talk) 09:31, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Propose merging:
Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. The one article Andrea Derjaj is already in Category:Albanian male boxers, so no need for dual upmerge. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 04:02, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
adding Category:Cyclists from Kavajë whose 3 articles are already in Category:Albanian male cyclists. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 17:20, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Would you consider nominating Category:Cyclists from Kavajë (3 articles) as well?--TM 16:48, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Wikipedia:Gender[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge. Renaming the target would require a further nomination. – Fayenatic London 22:38, 29 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Category:Wikipedia gender is an administration category for pages related to gender on Wikipedia. It is not helpful to further segment it by gender, especially when all three categories are rather lightly populated at the moment. (@Apokrif: pinging the category creator) -- Black Falcon (talk) 02:42, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep both. Category:Wikipedia:Women is well-populated, and has much room for expansion. The systemic bias against women in en.wp is the focus of a lot of work, and Category:Wikipedia:Women is where it should all be tied together. I dunno if Category:Wikipedia:Men is capable of so much expansion, but best to keep it for balance. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:31, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that there is room for expansion, but what is gained by separating pages about systemic bias against women from the broader category for gender on Wikipedia, especially when there are comparatively so few pages related to men. I can see how a split would be helpful if the parent category grows too large, but right now it seems too early to start splitting the category. If kept, the categories should be renamed to Category:Wikipedia men and Category:Wikipedia women, per Wikipedia:Category names#Special conventions. Cheers, -- Black Falcon (talk) 05:28, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom, the three categories together have a very limited number of pages, not making it worthwhile to diffuse. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:52, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support merge within the project structure, there isn't sufficient content or cause to make this division. Gender rules for real content don't apply to project trees. Also, the parent category surely should be Category:Wikipedia:Gender, no? SFB 02:37, 18 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Overcategorization by ethnicity. Nothing unique about American MMA artists of Italian descent. TM 01:08, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That was an oversight on my part. I forgot to add the dual merge to the nomination. Thanks for catching it. I've added it to the proposal.--TM 13:39, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
