The result of the discussion was: rename. – Fayenatic London 06:58, 9 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: At the very least, this definitely has to be renamed -- the standard form in geographic categories is just "New Jersey", not "the New Jersey". That said, I'm not entirely convinced that this actually needs to exist at all -- it doesn't satisfy either of the required conditions for geographic diffusion of a parent category, as Category:Gay villages in the United States is not large enough to require subdivision by state and the intersection is not a WP:DEFINING characteristic in its own right. (It does already have a few categories for other states which will also need to be reconsidered if people agree with me about this.) Accordingly, I'm taking it to a full CFD, just in case other people agree with me, instead of just listing it for a speedy renaming. But at the absolute minimum it definitely has to be renamed. Category:1990s American LGBT sitcoms[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge (non-admin closure). Marcocapelle (talk) 04:07, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Three WP:SMALLCATs, all created just to contain a single sitcom. Parent Category:American LGBT-related sitcoms is not large enough to need subdivision by decade -- even granting the debatable proposition that it actually needs to exist at all, it contains just eight other entries, for a total of nine once W&G is upmerged back into it. There's simply no need to obsessively subcategorize things this narrowly. Bearcat (talk) 20:54, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Non-governmental organizations of elected officials in the United States[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Government-related professional associations in the United States.
Nominator's rationale: The fact that they are non-governmental organisations is not defining nor helpful. In line with similar categories. Rathfelder (talk) 09:11, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Or Category:Government-related professional associations, which I have just discovered. Rathfelder (talk) 18:35, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Non-governmental organizations of elected officials in Nigeria[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Political organizations in Nigeria. One is stated to be non-partisan so I have also added it into Category:Government-related professional associations. – Fayenatic London 07:16, 9 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Ill defined and superfluous Rathfelder (talk) 09:09, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose The whole point of this category is clearly-defined in its title: that the organisations are non-governmental, i.e. that they are not emanations of the state or federal govt. This distinguishes them from all the governmental bodies which such people belong to.
I note the contrast between this nomination to delete and the nom above to rename the equivalent American category. I hope that @Rathfelder has very good explanation for the different actions, because the only distinction I can see is that Rathfelder wants to delete the African category. Not a good look :( --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:19, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Non-governmental organisations with Irish names[edit]

The result of the discussion was: keep. At least based on this poorly conceived nomination. xplicit 05:18, 17 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Non-defining Rathfelder (talk) 09:08, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose What ? You will need a much better reason then something as vague as "Non-defining". It is very clear what category is about. Djln Djln (talk) 13:27, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@BrownHairedGirl: You might be interested in this discussion. Djln Djln (talk) 13:40, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
So why does Rathfelder propose deletion, rather than merge to both parents? Why does Rathfelder want to remove these NGOs from both Category:Non-governmental organizations and Category:Entities with Irish names?
And what exactly does Rathfelder consider non-defining about non-governmental organisations with Irish names which doesn't apply equally to Category:Schools and colleges with Irish names , Category:Sports venues with Irish names, Category:Political institutions with Irish names, etc? Why exactly are NGOs a problem when no other subcat of Category:Entities with Irish names has been nominated?
This looks like a thoroughly ill-considered drive-by nomination. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 13:59, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - there is Category:Entities with Celtic names. One might argue that this is categorisation by shared name or one might prefer to leave well alone. Oculi (talk) 15:31, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • I would support this as a nomination in the spirit of WP:SHAREDNAME, but a broader nomination may be required. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:18, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • We agreed to delete all the NGO categories two years ago - Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2016 April 5. Very large numbers of them have gone. It makes no sense to keep these. We dont have categories for organisations with French, Dutch or Spanish names. Rathfelder (talk) 21:23, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • I would be happy to rename the category "organisations with Irish names‎". I'm only following through the implications of our earlier decision to abolish the NGO categories. I dont actually see the categories based on the language of names is very helpful, but I dont object to it. I guess it relates to a political issue in Ireland. Rathfelder (talk) 12:19, 29 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Rathfelder: it's a great pity that you still demonstrate zero comprehension of the distinction between deleting a category and merging it to its parents. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 16:02, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak keep, though I'd like to see a better name than "Entities..." After all, I am an entity with an Irish name. Grutness...wha? 02:26, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: keep (non-admin closure). Marcocapelle (talk) 04:13, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: He is the only (known) director with the name Bala. --Kailash29792 (talk) 06:24, 20 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Support: Its fine if the title gets renamed. I'm okay with it. Srivin (talk) 12:19, 20 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete (non-admin closure). Marcocapelle (talk) 04:17, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: A category for a modern TV series that contains a bunch of emperors, empresses, and ministers from the 14th century. Timmyshin (talk) 02:38, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete – Yup, these are all real people. Not appropriate for a TV series category. LaundryPizza03 (talk) 06:02, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Having been portrayed by an actor or actress in a historical drama television series, 650 to 700 years after their death, is not a WP:DEFINING characteristic of these people. Just because it's on the real people who the TV characters were inspired by, instead of the actors who were in it, doesn't make it any less of a WP:PERFCAT violation.
