Nominator's rationale: Redundant to Category:WikiProject The Beatles templates. Also, the current scheme will put templates into the categorization of articles; that's not always bad but it's probably better to avoid, especially when these are duplicate schemes. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 20:28, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I created this category, but I now think you're right. Charles Essie (talk) 21:47, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Category:People of Huguenot descent[edit]

Nominator's rationale: As with the "Alsatian people" tree that I nominated yesterday, Huguenot is not a defining ethnicity or nationality for the purposes of "descent" categorization -- all it means is that the person had ethnically French ancestors who were Protestants instead of Catholics. That does not necessarily have any bearing on a person's own lived reality -- I have a line of Huguenot ancestry, but that fact tells you less than nothing about me because my Huguenots married Lutherans who married Ukrainian Orthodox Catholics who married Roman Catholics who begat lapsed Catholic "spiritual but not religious" moi. So if a person cannot be directly added to Category:Huguenots itself, then happening to have one or more Huguenot ancestors is not an appropriately defining characteristic for the purposes of categorization. We do not normally categorize people by the Catholicism or Protestantism of their ancestors, and Huguenots don't have a strong claim to being a special case. Bearcat (talk) 19:53, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. To some extent Huguenots were a special case, because they were an exceptionally large group of people who left France by the end of the 17th century. But Huguenot descent is of course not defining for 20th-century and 21st-century people. Instead it would be more useful to have e.g. Category:Huguenot migrants to Scotland in the tree of Category:17th-century people. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:16, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep but purge. The Huguenots were a Protestant community in France, many of whom emigrated to avoid forced conversion to Catholicism or expropriation of their assets. Huguenot descent would be highly significant for those who fled Catholic persecution during the French Wars of Religion and following the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. However this will only be a significant characteristic in people within a few generations of emigration from France. Though there continues to be a French Protestant Church in London, though I suspect all its members have long since been assimilated. I would not expect Huguenot ancestry to be significant in the biography of a person active even in the late 18th century; certainly not more recently. Peterkingiron (talk) 17:21, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Those few generations for whom it's meaningful are exactly the people who could legitimately be filed directly in Category:Huguenots anyway, and thus don't need this. Bearcat (talk) 17:49, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all while most "descent" categories are worthless; these are especially so since being descended from a combo of ethnicity + religion is almost impossible to be defining; everyone is descended from people of all sorts of religions: let me guess that nearly all Huguenots were descended from French Catholics (perhaps, a few were converts from something else, but that leads us to a similar end), so anyone of Huguenot descent is also of French Catholic descent, and 1500 years earlier likely from Gaulish Pagan descent, etc. Not defining, even if 100% of such ancestry; then we have folks who are 50%, 25%, 12.5%, and eventually a one-drop rule. The result of the discussion was: rename, without prejudice to a re-nomination for discussion. Good Ol’factory (talk) 05:16, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: rename, "people" is too general and could potentially even include politicians involved in solving the European migrant crisis. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:52, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: All of the films in the "Wild Bunch" category are included in the "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" category so there is no need for it to have its own category. Nicholas0 (talk) 19:39, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: rename (non-admin closure). Marcocapelle (talk) 07:13, 5 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Short track speed skating and regular (long-track) speed skating are considered two separate sports. Only short track has ever been contested at the Southeast Asian Games, and the medalists listed are all short-track medalists. Smartyllama (talk) 17:00, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Totally agrees with renaming this category on the bases of that speed skating and short track speed skating are considered as 2 – two different sports. The category also shows that there are only short track medalists that are categorised. So please move or rename this category as proposed. Migrant (talk) 14:06, 29 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Short track speed skating and speed skating are considered two distinct sports. Only short track has ever been contested at the Southeast Asian Games, and all articles in this category concern that. Smartyllama (talk) 16:59, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Fails WP:OCASSOC. Most of these play a tiny role in a show which is usually not even particularly relevant to the rest of their careers. wumbolo ^^^ 14:05, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
