Propose renaming:
Nominator's rationale: per the head articles 1979 European Parliament election etc, all of which have been renamed per WP:NC-GAL to put the year first, following an RFC in 2018.
The templates in these categories need renaming too, but that's another job. One step at a time. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 19:35, 2 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. MER-C 11:14, 11 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This was moved from Category:Shekhinah (singer) without proper discussion (and such moves should not be made unilaterally). That category would be deleted if nominated due to minimal content per WP:OCEPON. It remains an unnecessary level of categorization as the two subcats are already sufficiently interlinked. The "Work by" scheme for musicians is also not an established scheme or every artist with "Foo album" / "Foo songs" categories (and there are thousands of them) would have a "Works by Foo" parent. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 17:16, 2 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Oculi. Because the category was a straight move from the eponymous category, I referenced WP:OCEPON as to what has been done to similar categories in the past (they've been deleted not renamed). I still don't think this category is needed either so for now I am requesting deletion per WP:SMALLCAT due to lack of such an existing scheme. I will attempt in due course to attain consensus via the WP:SONGS and WP:ALBUMS project groups regarding the scheme in general. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 20:24, 2 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Given the present enthusiasm for 'works by', seeking consensus within WP:SONGS and WP:ALBUMS should indeed be sought first, and a bot could then do it. Oculi (talk) 20:49, 2 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Any discussion should really be held at WP:CATP to avoid WP:LOCALCONSENSUS. We shouldn't be using the Category:Works by musician branch of the tree any differently than we do Category:Works by filmmaker or Category:Works by writer. --woodensuperman 12:49, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As far as Category:Works by American musicians vs Category:Wikipedia categories named after American musicians goes, it's the musician tree that has it the wrong way round. Due to WP:OCEPON, there should be far fewer eponymous categories than works by categories - compare Category:Works by American writers (513 subcats) against Category:Wikipedia categories named after American writers (164 subcats, most of which have a "works" subcat, and could probably be trimmed). --woodensuperman 12:57, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
This is merely your POV. The eponymous musician tree has been there since before 2006 (see diff). Category:Works by American musicians was created in 2017. You also have your own interpretation of WP:OCEPON. Oculi (talk) 13:15, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The eponymous tree is a maintenance category only. The works by musician tree has been around since at least 2010 (see [1], to use the same Bob Dylan example). It's probably not intentional, but you're misrepresenting the year above, by only looking at American musician. The parallel eponymous American musician category was only created in 2012 (see [2]). --woodensuperman 13:23, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. "Works by..." categories are certainly preferable to eponymous categories (see WP:OCEPON), which is why this was moved. WP:SMALLCAT does not really apply as "Works by..." is "part of a large overall accepted sub-categorization scheme", and allows placement in many other categories otherwise closed off to this. --woodensuperman 12:25, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The "works by" scheme is part of larger overall accepted scheme but certainly not how you are attempting to define it. In fact, consensus was achieved in this proposal from February 2010 (specifically, Proposal 2), which determined the Category:Works by musician tree should be reserved for "creative works by composers and songwriters" and this is also noted on the category description. A singer singing songs for an album is no different than an actor reciting lines in a play. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 17:56, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think this really is the case. If so, then why do the albums and songs by artist default to "works by" categories if present? Consensus has likely changed in the interceding 9 years. --woodensuperman 08:07, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It was done so because of musicians who have directed films or written books as has been the only reason for "works by musician" categories to be created, so that's the scheme that has been established or else there'd be a lot more than 100 "works by musician" categories. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 06:03, 9 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Invalid rationale, this is part of a larger category scheme. Dimadick (talk) 14:47, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete the eponymous category: the bio article should be the main article of the Works by category, though there is barely enough to merit its existence. Peterkingiron (talk) 14:49, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, the two subcategories are already interlinked by virtue of the Albums and Songs templates. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:10, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: The Marshalsea prison, like those in Dublin, was always given the definite article. It was named after the Marshalsea Court, which in turn took its name from the office (or marshalcy) of the Knight Marshal of the Royal Household, one of the judges. There are about 250 categories relating to the Northern Territory. Over 90% of them use the form favoured by both the territorial government and most of the population - "Foo in/of the Northern Territory". The above categories are the only ones not following that form, one of which uses the unnecessary disambiguator "(Australia)" as well. Either Rename these or rename all the other 240-odd to match the no-article form. Grutness...wha? 14:42, 2 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support renaming - Should have articles. Anomalous+0 (talk) 01:03, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
