Category:Sports in Killeen, Texas[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Killeen, Texas. bibliomaniac15 05:28, 19 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:SMALLCAT. Contains only 1 article. User:Namiba 14:33, 6 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Upmerge. I did a search, and all that I could find to add to it was one measly redirect. The "People from..." category is probably big enough to split out a sportspeople subcat, but even then this wouldn't be big enough. Grutness...wha? 03:51, 7 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep I count now 22 entries so SMALLCAT is no longer applicable. --Just N. (talk) 16:36, 12 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Category:Sportspeople from Killeen, Texas is a separate category and has no bearing on whether this category exists. There are still 2 articles in this category.--User:Namiba 12:56, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: selectively merge (non-admin closure) Marcocapelle (talk) 05:36, 14 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Category contains only a subcategory for sportspeople from a small city in West Virginia. No need to merge as subcategory is already in Category:People from Clarksburg, West Virginia. User:Namiba 14:32, 6 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Upmerge. I did a search, and found two articles (one of them only marginally connected to Clarksburg) and two redirects. Which makes it borderline but only if you're in a generous mood. Grutness...wha? 04:01, 7 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Category:2017 in the Republic of Macedonia[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: reverse merge. plicit 02:05, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: both categories concern the same topic and should be merged although the name of the category is a really tricky subject Robby (talk) 06:51, 1 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • The category has meanwhile been emptied except for one subcategory and the alt proposal below for a reverse merge addresses my second objection, which makes the procedural oppose moot. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:28, 30 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • reverse merge North Macedonia does not exist until 2019, so we should not use the term before that. I know the Greeks want us to handwave reality and pretend the term exists from 1991, but that is not at all a reflection of reality.John Pack Lambert (talk) 12:33, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    • comment "I know the Greeks want us" I am Greek. Most people in my country still use the term Skopje for North Macedonia, and dislike the new name because it still includes the term "Macedonia". We have had a lot of nationalistic propaganda about how essentially Greek was Macedonia, despite all written sources covering how multiethnic and multilingual the region has been since the Middle Ages. Claiming exclusivity seems absurd to me. Dimadick (talk) 06:46, 27 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • I agree with John Pack Lambert. We should avoid categorisation implying that entities existed which did not at the time specified.Rathfelder (talk) 19:47, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Reverse merge per JPL. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:28, 30 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

That leads me to think that articles & categories referring to the area prior to February 2019 should refer to or be titled Macedonia, a disambiguation page. Are there any names/terms on that disambuguation page that would be acceptable for North Macedonia prior to February 2019? Or perhaps creation of a new page/category is in order (even if just redirects to North Macedonia), perhaps something like "North Macedonia pre-February 2019"? This is a recurring issue as so many countries/regions have had name and/or border changes (Poland, Austrian Empire, etc.) Gjs238 (talk) 15:30, 6 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Presumably Republic of Macedonia (redirect) was the common name at the time. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:07, 6 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • There were endless wiki discussions pre-2019 which settled on 'Republic of Macedonia'. Let us not re-visit these. Oculi (talk) 18:20, 6 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree, let's not rinvent the wheel if not necessary. Gjs238 (talk) 22:08, 6 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Reverse merge as suggested. We try to avoid anachronisms, but we cannot use Macedonia as that is ambiguous. It refers to an ancient Greek polity (ruled by Alexander the Great and ancestors); a Greek province; a Slavic republic (formerly a constituent republic of Yugoslavia). Greece contested the use of the name as they considered it to be a territorial claim on their province (now, I think, South Macedonia), leading Greece to refer to the country (insultingly) not by its name but by its capital. WP settled on "Republic of Macedonia", which was its official name (except in Greece); and we should stick to that. On the other hand it is exactly the same place as the present North Macedonia, so that 2018 in Republic of Macedonia should be parented by Category:Years in North Macedonia. What would look like an anomaly should be explained in a headnote. Such a category could also include articles for the Yugoslave republic of Macedonia. Peterkingiron (talk) 15:00, 12 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • 'Merge per nom. No need to confuse people. North Macedonia is the right name. --Just N. (talk) 16:44, 12 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. bibliomaniac15 05:28, 19 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Previously named "People from Cabinda", contained Category:Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda politicians and Category:Cabindan independence activists. Currently empty. – Fayenatic London 14:45, 6 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Completely redundant category. No other category exists that groups upcoming games by a particular genre or theme. The current by-year structure is sufficient. CoolingGibbon (talk) 22:11, 29 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
