The result of the discussion was: delete. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 16:53, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT fgnievinski (talk) 23:54, 28 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support in principle, but merge to parent categories. (This is only relevant if the subcategory is not deleted in the discussion below.) Marcocapelle (talk) 00:53, 29 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. This was part of an ill-considered larger project, most of which has already been deleted. The one article in this category is already in the parent categories. If the subcat is deleted per the CfD below, there will be no need at all for this category.--Srleffler (talk) 04:13, 1 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: non-defining fgnievinski (talk) 23:51, 28 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment, there is also Category:SI base units, partially overlapping. Marcocapelle (talk) 01:00, 29 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. This was part of a larger project that was ill-considered. Most of the other articles, categories, and templates have already been deleted. --Srleffler (talk) 04:09, 1 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Fictional dragons. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 16:55, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:SMALLCAT as small and unlikely to be expanded. In fact, some of the current articles here are dubious at best, such as Sandworms or Skeksis, leaving almost no relevant entries. The ones that are, are already in other subcategories of Category:Fictional species and races. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 22:35, 28 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 16:56, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Although I am aware of WP:SMALLCAT, I don't think an artist with as few albums as Christina needs them splitting into sub categories in this way. Its unlikely that people will go searching for Aguilera-specific compilation albums as she is not renowned for them >> Lil-unique1 (talk) — 18:22, 28 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Not required. The singer has released majority English language albums, just two have been Spanish. This is effectively a double cat - Aguilera albums that are also English language. Its fancruft-y >> Lil-unique1 (talk) — 18:20, 28 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: no consensus. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 17:06, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: rename, these are Ukrainian nationals, but in Ukraine Crimea has never been an oblast. See Autonomous Republic of Crimea. Alternatively merge to Category:People from Crimea. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:03, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - using de jure claims for categorizations is a dead end. People that are born in and live in the Crimean Oblast, a real world entity with real life institutions with which its inhabitants relate on everyday basis, is legit category scheme. Wiki categorization isn't a form of diplomatic recognition. Adding a disclaimer that area is disputed is perfectly fine, however. --Soman (talk) 18:56, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Under Russian regime it is also not an oblast. Besides, whether these people currently still live in Crimea is uncertain, while they lived (in the past) in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea for sure. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:31, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.

  • REname to Category:People from the Crimea. Crimea is a peninsula, so that its extnet is clear. The status of the area - Oblast 1954-1992; Autonomous republic of Ukraine 1992-2014; and de facto Autonomous republic of Russia 2014-present makes no difference to where (as a geographic location) they live. Peterkingiron (talk) 17:42, 20 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose, Crimea was an oblast from 1945 to 1991, and the included individuals appear to have been born during that period. CMD (talk) 11:03, 21 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Which is an even stronger argument to merge to Category:People from Crimea - it is not useful to categorize people by a former Soviet polity they were born in while they are notable as Ukrainian nationals. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:18, 23 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Categorization by place of birth is pretty standard. I'm sure the individuals are also in other categories that relate to nationality. CMD (talk) 07:06, 23 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Out of curiosity I had a look, and the first one I clicked on opens with "Sergey Leonidovich Dorenko...was a Russian TV and radio journalist", so they do not appear to have all been notable as Ukrainian nationals. CMD (talk) 07:08, 23 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Exceptionally so, and it does not make any difference. The fact that he was born in a subdivision of the Soviet Union is entirely trivial. We may categorize people by place of birth (although WP:COPDEF seems to discourage that too) but not by former subdivision. Marcocapelle (talk) 03:25, 24 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If it's trivial to categorise by place of birth then you need to argue for a deletion of all the categories of places people are from. Either way, this rename is incorrect. The former subdivision was the place of birth for these individuals, and they may never have been to the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. CMD (talk) 23:12, 24 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Whether it is generally trivial to categorize by place of birth is a whole different discussion. These people are currently in a place category, e.g. in Category:People from Yevpatoria, and my argument is that people do not have to be categorized by former Soviet subdivision on top of their categorization by place. • Comment - add "(Bolivia)" to the cat as well, to avoid confusion with Venezuela, Colombia, etc. --Soman (talk) 16:23, 21 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • That deserves a separate discussion, besides that discussion should be about the entire tree starting at Category:Sucre. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:26, 21 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • merge 20th and parent, keep 21st which has 4 entries so far. – Fayenatic London 21:34, 21 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    • With one editor who wants to go further than the nomination and another editor who does not want to go as far as the nomination, it seems that the nomination is a nice in-between solution. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:31, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Support nom. If Fayenatic London's suggestion was followed, Category:History of Sucre would only have one article and one subcat, Category:21st century in Sucre, which would still have 4 articles, leaving History of Sucre too small. No particular opinion on Peterkingiron's suggestion. — Qwerfjkltalk 21:11, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Support all three mergings. I support adding "(Bolivia)" to the entire tree starting at Category:Sucre as well. --Privybst (talk) 09:11, 6 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT. There's only one Shaggs tribute album (Better than the Beatles), so not a useful category. Popcornfud (talk) 15:07, 20 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - defining characteristic of the album. "...is a tribute album consisting of cover versions of songs by the American band the Shaggs" - if this is not a defining characteristic then we might as well give up. Oculi (talk) 15:59, 20 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - I am going to paste in here some comments I made in 2014] about Category:Dusty Springfield tribute albums from a similar discussion. The rationale is the same. Over the years, there have been other proposals for deletion of similar categories which I have not necessarily participated in, but resulted in the deletion of the categories. I wonder if the time has come to take another look at the overall Tribute albums category and see if there is consensus (or at least an absence of objections) to finish categorizing most Tribute album category members similar to how Better than the Beatles and Just a Little Lovin' have been categorized.
Comments from similar discussion on Dusty Springfield tributes from 2014:

"I would not strongly object to this, but let me explain why I created that and numerous other single-entry subcategories within Category: Tribute albums. The Tribute album category was populated with many entries, some of which were easy to eyeball and identify with the artist or band to whom the tribute was being made, but many of which were not immediately clear. The Shelby Lynne album currently in the category in question, Just a Little Lovin', is an example of this. If users were not familiar with that song, they would not be able to at a glance tell who the artist was whose work was being covered. It seemed much more browsable and user-friendly to minimize the number of album articles directly in the category for Tribute albums, and categorize them by the artist or band (or other uniting theme, such as Category:Tribute albums to music-related organizations). This allowed them to be identifiable at a glance as to who the artist was that was the subject of the tribute, and it allowed alphabetical organization by the covered artist (in this case, under "S" for "Springfield".) Now, I understand that there are also concerns about over-categorizing, and I want to be respectful of that. Additionally, this is one of those jobs that I started a while ago, and meant to come back to sooner, but got sidetracked and so put off on to the back burner. However, I still think that the general approach has merit. If the consensus on the Dusty category is to keep it, then I would return to the Tribute album category and continue work on creating subcats for artists being tributed on the individual articles remaining in that category. Please let me know if I can expand on any of these comments... ...I don't know if there are additional relevant articles, but I do want to encourage my fellow Wikipedians to ask themselves if in this specific situation (that is, tribute albums) it is of greater service to WP users to use subcategories even when there is only one article. It is my belief that it is."

Thanks to all for their contributions and let's discuss further as appropriate, whether on this or another WP talk or discussion page. KConWiki (talk) 16:40, 20 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak delete and upmerge per WP:NARROWCAT. If this category is deleted, the article should be upmerged into Category:Tribute albums and Category:The Shaggs (I just created this category to account for this article). As for KConWiki's point, List of tribute albums is probably a better place to organize tribute albums alphabetically by the band being tributed (I just added The Shaggs). 'Weak' because I'm not heavily knowledgeable about music, and overturning the existing convention of "<band name> tribute albums" should be done carefully to avoid losing defining characteristics in categorization. Retro (talk | contribs) 14:10, 21 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'm kind of confused by the arguments here. It seems to me that having a category that's only over going to have one thing in it is pretty useless and pretty much what the WP:SMALLCAT policy appears to rule out. If we want a user-friendly way of browsing then the list article you mention is surely the way to do it, right? It's possible I simply don't understand the comment from KConWiki above, though...? Nominator's rationale: merge, "before the 19th century" is an arbitrary cutoff. Marcocapelle (talk) 04:27, 28 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment -- The significance of 19th century is that is when RSPCA and other animal protection charities were formed and cruelty against animals was outlawed in UK and some other places. Peterkingiron (talk) 18:47, 29 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename (and recategorize pages) to have this be Category:Animal cruelty incidents before the RSPCA (which was founded in 1824). Peterkingiron's rationale makes a ton of sense. TartarTorte 23:22, 29 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • I do not agree. Post-1824 animal cruelty and pre-1824 aren't any different, and besides the RSPCA was a British organization while it is a global category. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:49, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Here the word "incidents" is not neutral. There are some films that become the subject of controversies because of the allegation of animal cruelty. But sometimes allegation can be false. So we can cover all animal cruelty related articles to a single category by renaming this category. Also its mother category Category:Film controversies contains categories of same name structure (such as Casting controversies in film, not Casting incidents. Mehedi Abedin 01:35, 28 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose for now, the current name matches the name of the parent Category:Animal cruelty incidents and the sibling categories. When they are nominated in conjunction we might discuss alternatives such as Category:Cruelty to animals in film, per article title Cruelty to animals. Marcocapelle (talk) 04:31, 28 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose, the an incident and a controversy are two different things. An incident is a factual event, a controversy is a subjective thing that might happen as a result of an incident but the two things are not the same. The incident describes the event itself while the controversy describes the aftermath. >> Lil-unique1 (talk) — 18:39, 28 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
