The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Works about labor. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 17:51, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: These overlap so significantly that broad categories like a film/journal could easily be categorized in either without any distinction. "Works" is an unfortunate pun here ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 20:56, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm don't see it. If I look at the subcategories, for instance, "Works about child labour" and "Mass media portrays of the working class" are not necessarily anything about the labor movement. "Films about labour" includes the subcategory " Films about criticism and refusal of work‎ (13 P)". The subcategory "Songs about labor" includes "trade union songs", sure, but also Dolly Parton's "9 to 5", which has nothing to do with the labor movement; "Chain Gang", similarly; "Sixteen Tons", "She Works Hard for the Money", and so on. If you don't like the combined category, then I think it would make more sense to have two separate categories than to merge "works about labor" into the labor movement category. But, I created the combined category for exactly the reason you originally cite -- that there is an important overlap in interest and subject. Lquilter (talk) 21:49, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Alternative: rename to Category:Works about labor, for brevity, of which Category:Works about the labor movement can still remain a valid subcategory. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:38, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Alternative: rename to Category:Works about labor. Of course there is an overlap between a category and its subcategory, namely the whole of the subcat. As Lquilter points out, merge doesn't work at all. Oculi (talk) 13:12, 10 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support merge to Category:Works about the labor movement per WP:PRECISE, and prune as appropriate. I think only calling it labor/labour will create a huge category of anything referring to any sort of exerted effort or work. - jc37 16:55, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jc37: but that is exactly what this category is about. If we would purge everything that is not about the labor movement then that would need a new parent Category:Works about labor after all. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:14, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So, looking over Category:Works by topic, it looks like you're absolutely right. My comments would appear to apply to that whole tree lol. But since we're just talking about a single branch, I Support your proposed rename : ) - jc37 17:23, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Alt rename to Category:Works about labor per Marco, and prune as appropriate.

The result of the discussion was: no consensus. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 17:52, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: "Films by studio" category for a studio that doesn't have a Wikipedia article about it. An article previously existed, but was draftified in 2022 as poorly sourced advertorialism and then got deleted there after six months of failure to have been improved -- and this category was attempting to bypass all of that by using the category itself as a substitute for a mainspace article, namely by adding an infobox and an article introduction directly to the category itself, which is not an appropriate use for a category either.
Obviously no prejudice against recreation if and when the studio has a properly written and properly sourced article in mainspace, but categories are not an alternative to articles. Bearcat (talk) 17:56, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment — the category space abuse has been fixed. This has plenty of entries, while many others in Category:Indian films by studio have fewer. It might be better to encourage somebody to write a main article, rather than penalize for not having one yet.

The result of the discussion was: reverse merge. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 17:52, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Duplicate category - car chasm (talk) 20:33, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge or reverse merge per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:41, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Reverse Merge. While both forms seem to be in use in that tree, I think I see more "X in location". - jc37 16:55, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Reverse Merge — both now tagged — better as suffix, ancient Greek isn't a proper demonym.

Nominator's rationale: What is the point of this small, orphaned, obscure category? Dronebogus (talk) 11:23, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Out of curiosity, what makes it small and orphaned? The category seems to have a similar number of entries to other categories. Also, given how Prep for Prep is mentioned in the biographies of the linked articles wouldn’t that make it not obscure? (I.e. this would be like a university or company affiliation category) AcademicUpdates (talk) 16:05, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, not a defining characteristic. Marcocapelle (talk) 11:51, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Given its people are affiliated with the organization from elementary school through after college and it is listed in their bios as one would list a college, wouldn’t it be defining? AcademicUpdates (talk) 16:07, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Okay, so you have graduates, trustees, teachers and former directors within this category. Is this a catch-all for any person affiliated with this program in any capacity? There's no description for this category, so what pages are supposed to fit? From WP:CREATECAT: it is helpful – to both readers and editors – to include a description of the category, indicating what pages it should contain, how they should be subcategorized, and so on. Doing a quick search it doesn't look like there are many returns of articles that mention Prep for Prep. Snickers2686 (talk) 21:52, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the suggestions, I've gone ahead and added a category description. Other notable secondary schools have categories that are similar to this (such as Category:Phillips Exeter Academy people), so should one exist in the same way for Prep for Prep as well given it has more than a dozen entries? AcademicUpdates (talk) 06:42, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - I think this may just be vague enough to fall under WP:ASSOCIATEDWITH. - jc37 16:55, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete — orphaned, created by WP:SPA. Categorize by populated places and institutions, not the names of NGO programs that merely assisted in placement. With that name, I'd assumed it was a tutoring NGO. Sadly in NY, there still exist "preparatory" schools, the "posh" English elite education system. The rest of us have to make do with actual public education by the Scottish model. Fortunately, the US Founders chose the superior Scottish model over the English model.

Nominator's rationale: Non-defining characteristic per WP:NONDEFINING, not to mention quite a US-centric category. --Animalparty! (talk) 10:34, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom, but I guess a list in the main article would be ok. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:52, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - should be a list, if anything, to explain context, etc. - jc37 16:55, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Non-defining characteristic per WP:NONDEFINING. International/multinational organizations may have different legal status in different countries: they might warrant mention in a list about said law, but being sanctioned by any country is not a commonly or consistently applied characteristic for any of these groups. --Animalparty! (talk) 10:22, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom. The main article contains a list of organizations which is fine. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:53, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: rename. An additional rename can be discussed in another discussion, @William Allen Simpson. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 18:04, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Just looking for some opinions on this unilateral, manual move of topics relating to the City of Kingston (an area of Greater Melbourne). Obviously the new name matches the article title which is desirable, but I feel it is quite ambiguous - the most obvious other city called Kingston is the capital of Jamaica, but there are several others, that was the thinking behind my original naming for the topic as Category:City of Kingston (Victoria) when created at the end of last year. If others feel the new name is more suitable, no problem, but I do feel it needs a look at, and as far as I know there was no prior discussion, certainly not involving me. Crowsus (talk) 01:35, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Please also list and tag the subcategories that you propose to be moved back. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:11, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I had changed this and the other subcategories from "... City of Kingston (Victoria)" to "... City of Kingston" as:
    1. "... City of Kingston" were not in use.
    2. They now conform to the other subcategories in Category:Local government areas of Melbourne
I also wasn't aware of the proper process of renaming categories on here when I did change the names (Categories don't have the easy move function like pages do). -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 10:15, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • If no-one objects, I propose to merge this set speedily under WP:G6 in order to promptly undo the out-of-process moves by ThylacineHunter (talk · contribs) before the empty original category pages get deleted. – Fayenatic London 10:07, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately you didn't do so in time, and all the (Kingston) suffixed categories have been deleted as empty... Crowsus (talk) 23:22, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
