Category:Izyaslavichi family (Polotsk)[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 18:09, 30 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Consistency with the eponymous subject’s article Iziaslav of Polotsk. Compare sibling categories in Category:Rurikids and Category:Kievan Rus' royalty.  —Michael Z. 22:09, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The disambiguation looks unnecessary on the surface, but there is a more prominent branch under Iziaslav I of Kyiv, which would be the primary subject for this title. Although the other article and category do not exist, the name is used in this form, for example in the big table in Grand Prince of Kiev (I have no idea whether it’s standard nomenclature or only happens to be used in Wikipedia).  —Michael Z. 22:18, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Superpowers[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Withdrawn. Purged and re-parented during discussion, made into proper set category. (non-admin closure) William Allen Simpson (talk) 06:43, 30 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: There have only ever been 4 worldwide superpower nations, and only 1 hyperpower nation, so delete WP:SMALLCAT. Lately, it has been filled with historical great and regional powers. After renaming, many should be split to Category:Great power or Category:Regional power.
This category originated as superhuman superpowers. However, it was taken over without discussion. It has become an uncoordinated mess of barely related articles that frequently should be in more specific categories.
William Allen Simpson (talk) 16:31, 6 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, marked as alternative. Delete was my initial thought, but was willing to entertain some repurposing.
William Allen Simpson (talk) 22:58, 6 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • I was focusing too much on the subcategories alone. At second thought I am counting some 10 articles that truly are about the topic "superpower". So purge rather than delete. Possibly rename to Category:Superpower (singular). Marcocapelle (talk) 12:23, 7 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, Qwerfjkltalk 21:41, 14 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • I hadn't yet thought of superpowers in the meaning of "Fictional superhuman features or abilities", that is an interesting addition to the discussion. @William Allen Simpson: do you agree this a convincing argument for merging to Category:Hegemony after all and converting Superpowers to a dab page? Marcocapelle (talk) 14:19, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As I'd mentioned in the nomination, this category originated as superhuman superpowers. (You and I both try to investigate the history of categories we discuss. Many thanks.) Do not merge to Category:Hegemony. There is already a Superpower (disambiguation) page, but a sovereign state able to project its power globally is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC.

  • Oppose changing to singular. Categories are about a collection of items and should be plural. I would oppose merger to hegemony as that is a narrower concept than the role of modern superpowers. Peterkingiron (talk) 17:08, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Per WP:SMALLCAT. This category contains only 3 other categories and is unlikely to significantly grow in the near future. User:Namiba 15:51, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - it's not WP:SMALLCAT since the category contains over 40 members, ie articles (in 3 subcats). (A subcat is not a 'member' of a category; this could be made clearer.) Oculi (talk) 16:31, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Reasonable I started the category. My thinking at the time was that it belonged as a sub-category of Category:Allentown, Pennsylvania, which I do still believe. The nominator above is correct, however, that it is a small category and not likely to grow. It's merger is reasonable because it would categorize it with other regional schools. The idea of doing this even crossed my mind prior to this nomination. I see the basis for doing it and the argument for not doing it is only that the category's affiliation with Allentown also made and makes some sense. It looks this proposal would meet both objectives, however. Keystone18 (talk) 17:33, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support -- The individual categories are legitimate, but with only 3 or them SMALLCAT suggests merger. Peterkingiron (talk) 17:15, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Operas based on the Jason-Medea myth[edit]

The result of the discussion was: rename. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 18:11, 30 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: "The Jason-Medea myth" is an unclear descriptor and doesn't appear to be in common usage even in scholarly sources. Most of the operas are based on Medea (play)‎, which would fit into the existing category Category:Works based on Medea (Euripides play). The others can be moved to Category:Works about the Argonauts. MClay1 (talk) 14:22, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT (2), with no possibility of expansion. Both are currently in parent, so deleting will work as well.

Nominator's rationale: The distinction between a gas giant and a more general giant planet is too small to be relevant to fiction. A gas giant is a giant planet which is mostly hydrogen. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 12:36, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: This set of categories (at Category:Olympic women's footballers by country, which would be emptied) are a complete outlier: no other group at Category:Summer Olympics competitors by sport and country has been split by gender, even those which are team sports with a large number of entrants and involve no mixed gender events (eg Field hockey, Handball, Basketball). I created the Denmark group yesterday before I looked at it fully. PS, apologies for adding these 5 separately, I tried to do as a bundle but couldn't work out how to use the Twinkle template in that way. Please re-format if easier. Keep The men's and women's tournaments are completely separate competitions. Separate competitions should have separate categories. That is why there are different categories for men and women footballers. Plus they are subcategories of there respective categories connected to their national teams. Djln (talk) 20:32, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Once the men's national team players are categorised as such (i.e within Fooian soccer players/footballers, alongside Fooian women's internationals rather than one being a subset of the other), the Olympic players can go in the internationals tree too without gender having to be involved. By the way, categories have been created for the USA's bronze, silver and gold medallists in soccer, which are mixed even though the participants have been split! I have no strong opinion on whether those specific medallist ones should be there (only that nation has a full set of medallists by sport, e.g at Category:Olympic silver medalists, other nations have a few random intersections like Croatia's water polo medallists and China's 2016 medallists). This means the likes of Hamm and Lilly have 6 categories for the Olympics (1996/2000/2004 footballer, US women's soccer player, US soccer gold medalist and US soccer silver medalist, we could at least reduce that by 1 if the medalists were subcats of a mixed player set).
