The result of the discussion was: no consensus. (Note that WP:RELIST says it should not be a substitute for a no consensus closure. If the closer feels there has been substantive discussion, and disparate opinions supported by policy have been expressed, but consensus has not been achieved, a no-consensus close may be preferable.) (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 01:15, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Category lacks members. Let'srun (talk) 21:51, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How many members does it lack? Keep; part of well-defined, highly-structured categorization scheme. Deletion will break parallelism between neighboring branches of the category tree and reduce ease of navigation. Jweiss11 (talk) 22:29, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Keep per Jweiss11. Cat contains multiple articles. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 22:41, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge can be re-created if more articles are written. SportingFlyer T·C 23:17, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep: Per Jweiss. Useful for navigation and we need to consider that the category itself is a subcat which helps with navigation. If merged the target is category would not be added to all the categories of the one being merged, which would hinder navigation. Merging would be a net negative to the encyclopedia. Hey man im josh (talk) 00:18, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep nom statement is incorrect. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 03:08, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge for now, having only two articles in the category is not helpful for navigation. No objection to recreate the category when some more articles are available. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:00, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge for now per Marcocapelle. –Aidan721 (talk) 14:21, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. Merging this will not help navigation at all - it will only make it more difficult to navigate articles, something that goes against the purpose of the entire reason we have categories. BeanieFan11 (talk) 16:05, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • That's iff someone wants to find the coaches as well with one less click - but in the name of order and sense I'd rather go with the other option; if I wanted to find seasons of college football teams and Talladega was on my list, I'd go to Category:College football seasons by team. This merger would mean that Talladega is no longer there, which gives the appearance that there's no Talladega season articles due to it no longer being on the very well-maintained categorization scheme of ~20 years that this would be disrupting for...what purpose? BeanieFan11 (talk) 16:54, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Wikipedia policy should never trump a WikiProject. Let'srun (talk) 18:43, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Lists of association football penalty shoot-outs. (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 22:33, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Categorization by a trivial characteristic. User:Namiba 15:23, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I support all of this, as it's a better implementation of my suggestion. Joseph2302 (talk) 18:18, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • clarify "re-parent"? I oppose creating a "category:Lists of Foo" if there is no "category:Foo". Moving the lists to a subcat and purging the current one to just the main article I don't object to. jnestorius(talk) 22:15, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bisexual politicians by nationality[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: keep. (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 22:36, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: merge, trivial intersection, per WP:EGRS. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:34, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. These intersections are helpful for diffusion of the larger category, and various LGBT identities are not treated the same, for example being a transgender politician in the united states is treated very differently than being a lesbian or bi politician. Mason (talk) 20:54, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If not kept, then each category should also be merged to the respective identity category, eg. Australian non-binary politicians‎ should be merged to Category:Australian non-binary people‎ Mason (talk) 20:55, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom. Place Clichy (talk) 20:47, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Merge per nom. Omnis Scientia (talk) 15:31, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. The issue here is that in a good many of these countries, the "LGBT politicians" parent is already too large, and in need of diffusion on size grounds. For instance, the American categories here alone, if upmerged back to their Category:American LGBT politicians parent, would push that category to over 700 people, making it very much too large and in need of diffusion on size grounds.
The nomination has also failed to account for the fact that each category would also need to be upmerged to the appropriate Category:Gay politicians, Category:Lesbian politicians, Category:Bisexual politicians, Category:Transgender politicians or Category:Non-binary politicians parent, thus also making them too large and in need of diffusion on size grounds. For instance, killing off all of the "gay" subcategories above, and upmerging everybody back to Category:Gay politicians, gets that category exploded to 965 people — making it very much too large and in need of diffusion.
The standard practice has always been that we start with one core "LGBT" category as a base — but then once that one merged core category becomes large enough that diffusion is needed, then it can be quartered up into separate gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender subcategories. Each one of those does not need to separately reprove its own individual "definingness" separately from the definingness of LGBT as a whole — each of them is merely a passenger in the LGBT car, not its own car that needs its own separate definingness test above and beyond the definingness of the LGBT parent. We have to take into account the size of a merged "LGBT" category as well — if one of those becomes large enough that diffusion is necessary, then splitting it up into separate "gay", "lesbian", "bisexual", "transgender" and or "non-binary" categories is automatically fair game, because the size of merged parent categories is also an issue that we have to account for. Bearcat (talk) 22:11, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose convinced by the arguments the parent categories are already too large. SportingFlyer T·C 09:30, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep When I read through this nomination, I originally supported the merger but Bearcat makes some very valid points. A generic LGBT category can easily get too large to be useful. I think the focus should be on whether or not the categories are logically structured to be useful for readers rather than feelings about sexual orientation/identity. To be blunt, no one has brought up this point but me but it seems like these categories on sexual identity or sexual orientation seem to get nominated for deletion a lot. I'm more concerned about miscategorization (I'm thinking about Category:Ancient LGBT people) than whether or not categories should be merged. I've found articles where individual subjects have been categorized as LGBT when that aspect of life has never been mentioned at all in the article. But that's another matter than this nomination. The result of the discussion was: reverse merge. (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 17:57, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Two categories which serve the same purpose except that they use different terms (also WP:OVERLAP). Merge the new one with the older one. Omnis Scientia (talk) 09:34, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Support, but I think we should leave a redirect. Mason (talk) 12:45, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Omnis Scientia (talk) 13:20, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge and redirect per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:00, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge and redirect but the other way round - commentators is used by the parent category. SportingFlyer T·C 21:41, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • That is a good point - reverse merge appears to be a better solution. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:02, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@SportingFlyer, definitely agree. My plan actually was that we should merge this as is because the target category is the older of the two (someone told me a while back that the older category's history should be preserved if possible) and then speedy rename it to "Women sports commentators". Omnis Scientia (talk) 22:47, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 04:09, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Almost none of the articles here are actually codenames, just characters with false identities. An alternative might be moving it to Category:Fictional pseudonymous characters and reparenting it to Category:Pseudonyms, but I'm unsure if that's defining. Note: Deletion/move implies all subcategories would be deleted or moved in the same way. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 10:20, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Untrue, Ghostface (identity) is not a single character.★Trekker (talk) 15:06, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree that Ghostface isn't a "character", he is a fictional character whose role is taken by various people in-universe by wearing the mask. (identity) takes an overly in-universe perspective - from the audience's perspective he is still a character. I've created an RM to that effect suggesting the moves be rolled back. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 17:53, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Regardless of whether the move succeeds, a single article is insufficient to justify a whole category. That can simply be moved to Category:Pseudonyms. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 17:55, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, or at least purge articles about characters. I assume that after purging too little is left to keep the category. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:54, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: Speedy Keep. Nomination withdrawn (non-admin closure) Let'srun (talk) 03:27, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Only two members in the category are redirects; not a useful layer for navigation. Let'srun (talk) 04:14, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Keep per Jweiss11's comments. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 21:00, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep; part of well-defined, highly-structured categorization scheme. Jweiss11 (talk) 04:52, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge, a category with just redirects is not helpful for navigation. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:01, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Marcocapelle, those redirects bring the users to 1946 New Mexico Conference football season and 2022 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference football season, which contain detailed content about Adams State football seasons. Seems pretty helpful for navigation. Jweiss11 (talk) 06:21, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Update: this category now contains five items including three stand-alone articles. Let'srun, is that sufficient for you to withdraw this nomination? Marcocapelle, would you like to revise your stance here? Jweiss11 (talk) 17:42, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
