Works by categories[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete (non-admin closure). Marcocapelle (talk) 19:08, 20 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Included in this nomination are the following similar categories:
Nominator's rationale: There is no need for the added level of "works by foo" categorization when there is only the subcategory of each for "Films directed by Foo". For example, there is Category:Works by Clive Barker with multiple subcategories but not Category:Works by Peter Billingsley despite there being Category:Films directed by Peter Billingsley. This appears to be the accepted scheme. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 21:43, 11 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • In the case of Category:Works by Afdlin Shauki this has been achieved by creating a copy of the 'directed by' subcat and calling it 'screenplays by'. Not to be encouraged. Oculi (talk) 07:56, 19 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • And I don't see that as being any different than a music act who has only "albums" and "songs" subcategories. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 18:52, 20 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge (non-admin closure). Marcocapelle (talk) 05:58, 19 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Propose merging:
Nominator's rationale: There is no Category:Scottish film stubs, and no Template:Scotland-film-stub. There may be a case for creating one, but unless it exists and is oversized, then there is no point in sub-dividing something which doesn't exist. Nominator's rationale: Entries already listed on Wikipedia:Userboxes/Anime and manga/N-Z; a cat is not justified. —swpbT 19:33, 11 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. I confirm that at this time the member pages remain in suitable other categories (robberies by country, crimes by year) so no merge is required. – Fayenatic London 20:53, 29 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: delete, Category:Robbery by year has existed for four years and still contains only one year subcategory. The number of notable robberies isn't so large that diffusion by year is really needed. No need to merge, the articles are already in appropriate Robberies and Crimes categories. Category:Austrian people of Silesian German descent[edit]

The result of the discussion was: partial merge and delete. – Fayenatic London 20:58, 29 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: purge and merge, the category consists of four Austrian people whose parents were born in Austrian Silesia so they don't belong in the category (not of German descent) and should be purged. And as a fifth one there is Georg Wahl who was a German Silesian working in Austria for about 15 years. So he wasn't descending, he was just a German and should be moved to Category:German emigrants to Austria. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:25, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment -- As I said on a related discussion, being the descendant of a Displaced Person from the parts of Germany incorporated into Poland and other countries at the end of WWII may be highly defining, but Silesian is not an ethnicity. Perhaps rename to Category:Austrian descendants of displaced Germans, with the meaning of being a German displaced person, i.e. a refugee from lands lost by Germany at the end of WWII, being defined in a headnote. My proposed target would include refugees from the Sudetenland, the Polish part of Pomerania and East Prussia, as well as Silesia. Such people tended to have lost everything they owned before 1945, which is certainly defining. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:56, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • While not disagreeing that there may be room for such a category, neither of the five articles in the nominated category would get into it, because the circumstances in these five cases are different from being displaced in 1945. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:05, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.

The result of the discussion was: rename. Note: for the record, user:Ich has already implemented this, which is not best practice, especially as disagreement had already been expressed. – Fayenatic London 21:07, 29 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The term "Third Reich" has ideological baggage because of its origin and use in Nazi historiography, and is not as clear as "Nazi Germany". The term "Third Reich" has been out of favor among German academics since the 80s for these reasons.-Ich (talk) 09:59, 11 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Rename per common name / NPOV. K.e.coffman (talk) 07:26, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename to match main article Nazi Germany. I am not certain, however, why do classify the opponents of Nazism by their religion. Dimadick (talk) 13:00, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, indirectly per comment of User:Dimadick. The role of certain Protestant and Catholic church leaders in opposing Nazi Germany has been quite prominent (see Catholic Church and Nazi Germany and Confessing Church) so categorizing by religion does make sense to some extent. But there were hardly any Eastern Orthodox Christians in Germany. Two articles in the category are about people whose Orthodox belief wasn't defining for them and two articles are about Greek clergy who opposed the German occupation of their country - which is a totally different situation than German clergy opposing the Nazi regime.
