Nominator's rationale: Contains only one page 2012 in Canadian business, which is already adequately categorised. It's a one-off article, rather than part of a series.

The result of the discussion was: rename. MER-C 10:04, 3 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: I recommend renaming all subcategories of Category:Universities and colleges in Europe by country to "Universities and colleges of", affecting 7 of 42 national categories. The advantage of this is consistency with the supercategory and also with the subcategories of Category:People by university or college in Europe, which all begin "People by university or college in". I think the categories should cover notable universities and colleges past and present, even if the category currently only contains universities. I will do a similar list of categories outside Europe shortly and would like to do speedy moves of university people, alumni, faculty and heads subcategories if the principle is agreed. TSventon (talk) 15:52, 25 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • While not formally opposing, I would suggest discussing the possibility of reversed renaming of the other 30+ countries as well. "Colleges" seems to be a mostly British/American phenomenon. Marcocapelle (talk) 00:57, 26 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Marcocapelle I want a discussion of the "Universities"/ "Universities and colleges" distinction. Can you suggest a better format? If so I would be happy to withdraw my suggestion. I considered a default to "Universities", but "Category:Universities and colleges" covers a wider range of institutions than universities, as seen in Category:Universities and colleges by type and I think that it makes sense to use "Category:Universities and colleges in Foo" at national level to recognise this. TSventon (talk) 09:46, 26 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Category:Universities and colleges" covers a wider range of institutions than universities indeed, but in practice it mainly leads to the phenomenon that vocational schools are also included in these categories. While vocational school is something else than college. A complicating factor is that vocational schools may or may not provide a bachelor degree. Oddly, in the real world, vocational schools in non-English speaking countries start translating themselves to English as university, e.g. [1]. So I see three possibilities:
  1. we completely ignore the distinction between types of tertiary education and it all becomes "universities" (not quite correct)
  2. or we ignore the distinction between types of tertiary education and it all becomes "institutes of tertiary education" (that would be correct, but it is maybe too long)
  3. or we make a distinction between universities and vocational schools in countries where this distinction is applicable (but this is becoming awkward when vocational schools translate themselves to English as universities, as in the example)
In addition, insofar "colleges" is really a 'thing' in the UK or the US we may make an exception for those countries and add "colleges" in the category name for them. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:41, 26 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Marcocapelle, I will look at your suggestions shortly but I would add two more possibilities:
4. We use "Universities and colleges" as I suggested above.
0. We don't change anything.
TSventon (talk) 14:19, 26 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Marcocapelle. I started this discussion to see whether there is agreement to rename subcategories of "Universities and colleges" to confirm that they cover all kinds of tertiary education institution and what kind of discussion would be needed.
My understanding (based on Category:Universities and colleges by type) is that "Category:Universities and colleges" covers tertiary education institutions, which includes universities, vocational schools (whether for children or adults) and other educational institutions for adults. Thus national subcategories should cover a similar range. I think "and colleges" was chosen to mean educational institutions other than schools (for children) and universities. Having checked the Oxford and Merriam-Webster websites that seems to work for British and American English. Looking at your and my suggestions
1. Using "universities" is confusing as editors have to decide whether an institution belongs or doesn't.
2. Using "institutes of tertiary education" is correct, but it is obscure. It would lead to subcategories like "Academics of institutes of tertiary education" which seems too long.
3. Splitting "Category:Universities and colleges" into "Universities" and "Vocational schools" would again be confusing as vocational schools become, merge with or describe themselves as universities. It also ignores other educational institutions for adults.
4. Using "Universities and colleges" covers all tertiary education institutions, however "colleges" may be confusing in some countries.
Of the four I still prefer "Universities and colleges" but would welcome further feedback from outside the UK and US. TSventon (talk) 09:39, 27 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @Marcocapelle: The standard ways to name categories containing a wide range of higher education intitutions (colleges, institutes, academies, faculties, polytechnics, specialized schools etc.) seems to be Category:Universities and colleges and its subcategories. Colleges within universities may be a Brito-American thing, but college is also a generic term for describing any higher teaching organization that is not called a university. It is perfecty true that translation into English is a big part of the issue. Actual status of institutions sharing the same English name (e.g. university) are often not similar at all. This is precisely why it would probably be safer to have a "Universities and colleges" country-level catch-all category, which can then, if applicable, be subdivided into the specific types of organization which are normalized in the specific country, if we know better. That's pretty much the situation we have now, except that some countries have a Universities in... category which contains institutions not called University locally because they lack a upper Universities and colleges in... category. Place Clichy (talk) 09:51, 27 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom. These categories are not only about universities but also about other higher education institutions, and WP:C2C per well-established Category:Universities and colleges and Category:Universities and colleges by country applies. Place Clichy (talk) 09:51, 27 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support along the argument put by Place Clichy. "Universities and colleges" is reasonably wide ranging, but not too technical. There are not nearly so many articles about what in the UK we would call colleges, but I dont see any obvious reason to separate them out at the country level. If we have enough articles about theological or agricultural colleges in a particular country we can give them a subcategory. Rathfelder (talk) 12:25, 27 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: The "Presidents" category explicitely states that various titles are used (president, rector, director, chancellor etc.). Therefore there is little reason to keep two separate categories. Place Clichy (talk) 12:44, 25 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Heads of universities and colleges in Mexico[edit]

The result of the discussion was: rename/merge. MER-C 10:05, 3 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Heads of universities and colleges in Mexico have various titles, and these titles are not currently reflected by the content of the 3 different ill-named categories covering the topic. Nominating the oldest category for renaming for history reasons, and the others for merge. @Spiderjerky, Rathfelder, and TSventon: pinging contributors in previous discussions. Place Clichy (talk) 12:25, 25 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Fine by me. And any similar categories. Lets try not to have categories based on titles unless the titles reflect real differences. Rathfelder (talk) 12:46, 25 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
