Category:National champions[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Rename to Category:Sports national champions Timrollpickering (talk) 10:47, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: disambiguation. National champions are corporations which are technically private businesses but due to governmental policy are ceded a dominant position in a national economy ... but this category is for winners of the national championship in their sport. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:46, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: Rename Timrollpickering (talk) 10:47, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This is project category, and should be named as such. The present title makes it look like a content category associated with the article Namespace. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:24, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support but without the full stop in the middle. Is that a typo? M.Clay1 (talk) 02:51, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge/delete. bibliomaniac15 23:49, 27 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT. Contains only the head article Nandurbar, and an image which should be moved to commons. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:18, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Nigerian physiotherapists. bibliomaniac15 23:51, 27 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:NONDEFINING. Contains the head article Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy and two biographies (Arinola Olasumbo Sanya + Joseph Abiodun Balogun), both of whom are defined by their academic achievements, not by membership of this professional society BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 22:43, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Rename without prejudice to a follow-up deletion discussion Timrollpickering (talk) 21:39, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Disambiguation. The article Norman family is about a different family. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 21:09, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete (or rename per nom), as this family does not have an article it also does not need a category. Also borderline WP:SMALLCAT. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:14, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename per nom. Clearer scope. Dimadick (talk) 07:46, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Oldenburg[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename for now, with no prejudice against another discussion if a better target is found. bibliomaniac15 23:53, 27 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This is a tentative proposal for a first step to try to unravel a messy a set of categories. The first problem here is that the bare title "Oldenburg" is highly ambiguous (see Oldenburg (disambiguation), which includes no less than 7 current and former areas named after the city of Oldenburg), and since this category is for the former Oldenburg Land, it should be renamed to match. The bare title Category:Oldenburg should then be re-created as a dab page.
See also Talk:Oldenburg#Requested_move_29_June_2020. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 20:03, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Reluctantly support, renaming is obviously better than keeping, but deleting is also an option. For many of the articles it is questionable whether they belong here and a mere (historical) region does not require a tree with geography and people subcategories. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:14, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Marcocapelle, I share your hesitation. But my thinking is that this will be a multi-stage cleanup, and if we start by disambiguating the categories properly, we can see more clearly what's worth keeping. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 21:11, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Reluctantly support "Land" is the German word we translate as State. Historical geography of Germany is confusing enough without giving the impression that Oldenburg is now a state. But I dont have a better suggestion at the moment and I agree we should try to sort it out. Rathfelder (talk) 18:18, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Just for info: "Land" in German is ambiguous, it may also mean "region" or "rural area". But admittedly it is confusing for English-speaking people. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:48, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: Merge Timrollpickering (talk) 19:04, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Only two articles (Old Bar, New South Wales and Old Bar Airfield), with no sign of scope for expansion. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 19:14, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:LGBT White American culture[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Delete Timrollpickering (talk) 19:06, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Non-WP:DEFINING and tendentious grouping. There isn't a single unified "LGBT White American" culture that unites on whiteness as an organizing principle in its own right, which is one of the central reasons why what's been selected for inclusion here is deeply random: apart from the category for white LGBT people that's been nominated below, the other contents here are three dolls of the Barbie or Barbie-knockoff families (one of which was merely the most famous member of a three-doll line whose other two members were Puerto Rican and Black!), a comic strip that included characters who weren't white and thus wasn't defined by the whiteness of other characters per se, and a type of social gathering that has no inherent association with whiteness at all as people of any racial background can organize or attend one. This just isn't a defined grouping of things that operate in any unified context. Bearcat (talk) 13:21, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: The reason I created this category is so that its parent category Category:LGBT culture in the United States doesn't directly contain many pages, and the reason I named it Category:LGBT White American culture instead of Category:LGBT European American culture is because I thought the term European American mainly referred to someone of recent European ancestry and that an unqualified or unhyphenated 'American' usually referred to someone of multi-generational European descent who's family have been in the United States of America for many generations, and because I didn't know about certain Wikipedia guidelines. I'm sorry about that, and I will rename it to Category:LGBT European American culture as soon as I can. -- PK2 (talk) 21:29, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose rename, European-American culture is only used as container categories for German-American culture, Irish-American culture etc. Not for having articles directly in it. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:56, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, there aren't any articles that are clearly about this topic. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:20, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - none of the articles mention anything about being specific to Caucasian/White American culture. The method for inclusion looks like WP:OR and/or WP:SYNTH. Inter&anthro (talk) 03:54, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Then what do you think of me renaming it to Category:LGBT European American culture instead? -- PK2 (talk) 10:24, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:LGBT White Americans[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Merge Timrollpickering (talk) 19:04, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Category for a non-WP:DEFINING racial classification. As always, Wikipedia does not categorize people by race -- we may sometimes categorize people by their membership in a particular culture with a defined legal, social and political context, but that's not the same thing as categorizing people by skin colour: people are categorized as African American because of African American culture, not because of "black" skin colour per se — especially since some African Americans actually look "almost white", but are still African American, and some South Asians and Polynesians are essentially also "black" in skin colour without having a claim to "African American" status. But there isn't one single unified "white American" culture or context that all of these people share, and even the definition of what is "white" in the first place isn't fixed: several of the people here are Jewish, at least one is Latino, and at least one is Iranian -- and these are groups that are not universally understood as "white" by all sources. As always, it's very rarely useful to categorize people by majoritarian identities: we don't need to categorize people for whiteness in contexts where whiteness is the "norm", we don't need to categorize for maleness in occupations where maleness is the "norm", and on and so forth. I'm proposing merger rather than deletion, however, as some of the people here were removed from the parent category in the process of adding this -- obviously the upmerge should be avoided for people who are already in other subcategories, but not everybody is. Bearcat (talk) 13:13, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose rename for the same reason as in the nomination above, and also per WP:OCEGRS below, as an unrelated intersection with sexuality. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:59, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. No idea why this was spun out, and it should be merged back, per Bearcat. Crossroads -talk- 16:57, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, we do not categorize people by skin color - and even if we would, the category should be deleted per WP:OCEGRS as a trivial intersection with sexuality. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:25, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - per nom and above. Very few of the articles here mention anything about being specific to Caucasian/White American culture. The method for inclusion looks like WP:OR and/or WP:SYNTH. Inter&anthro (talk) 03:55, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete per nom; another triple intersection of race/ethnicity, sexuality, and nationality; why WP keeps categorizing on these bases either singularly or collectively is beyond me. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 18:03, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Upmerge or redirect if not outright delete I guess. -- PK2 (talk) 09:43, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:East African Journalists[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Delete Timrollpickering (talk) 19:07, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Procedural nomination. These were listed on the Speedy page for renaming to lowercase, but Bearcat objected that "we normally categorize journalists by nationality, not by broader transnational region, and then we group the national categories in continent-level container categories. All of the journalists are already categorized by specific country, and the country categories are already parented by an Category:African journalists category". – Fayenatic London 10:52, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: I won't "vote", since my rationale in the speedy discussion was already quoted above, but I needed to add some context to the discussion. Sometime after I posted my original comment, a person who has been involved in populating the categories posted to my talk page and appeared to suggest that their actual intention was to serve as tracking categories for all articles created as part of a particular WikiProject, and that not everybody in the categories is even necessarily a journalist at all. Which means it's definitely a misfire as constituted — tracking categories go on talk pages, not articles, and their names shouldn't be inaccurate misrepresentations of the intended scope — but it does suggest that there may still be a path to salvation here, because the categories could potentially be renamed for clarity and moved to the talk pages if there's actually a useful purpose that isn't already covered off by Category:Visibility Project (East Africa). Bearcat (talk) 13:34, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per nom (or convert to tracking as described by Bearcat if and only if the purpose of tracking becomes clear). Marcocapelle (talk) 20:30, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment "East Africa" used to refer to the three British colonies of Uganda, Kenya, and Tanganyika, o which seem to have been added here, the former Belgian protectorates of Rwanda and Burundi. However I am not sure that there is any real unity between these warranting a sub-continental category, but someone needs to be sure that the articles will not be orphaned. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:59, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Good point, I checked the latter, the categories can now be deleted. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:40, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: "Works based on" tend to be for adaptations. It's a bit bizarre to see it used in this case here where the natural parent category for all these childcats and the film one would be "franchise name mass media". ★Trekker (talk) 10:46, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Per WP:OCVENUE, WP:SMALLCAT and the spirit of WP:C2F, one eponymous article.
I would have no conceptual problem with this category if it contained articles on each year's Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. It doesn't though, since those articles don't exist yet. The only thing here other than the main article is Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium where the game is played, but that venue hosts a number of other events so it doesn't belong under the category and it's already under Category:National Football League venues in any case. Both articles are defined by the association with the Pro Football Hall of Fame though so they should stay in the category tree. - RevelationDirect (talk) 02:03, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
