The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Light festivals. bibliomaniac15 23:58, 27 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: per WP:SHAREDNAME. This is an assortment of festivals in various countries, for various purposes, whose common attribute is a shared name. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 20:22, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. As currently structured, this is a category by shared name, since it uses the capitalised form of proper name. If kept it should be renamed to a descriptive title along the lines of the suggestions above, and purged. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:31, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: no consensus. Although it is a consensus that "by nationality" is not appropriate, it's not clear whether this is because "by country" is more appropriate, or because the idea of a song having a "nationality" is not sound. The trend appears to be moving towards the latter, but that will probably need to be another discussion. bibliomaniac15 00:12, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Unify with supercategory Category:Songs by country and other members of the tree. 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 17:08, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Changing this wouldn't just be a matter of renaming. For any countries "Foo" with a large diaspora, "Fooish music" is produced on a large scale outside of "Foo". For example, there is a lot of Irish music in England. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 17:35, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@BrownHairedGirl: Alt rename Category:Rock songs by country and Category:Dance music songs by country then? 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 17:58, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@1234qwer1234qwer4 I think that would be better for now. Without prejudice to any restructuring of the subcats. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:01, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think that demonstrates the difficulty with the whole concept of "songs by country/nationality". There's Irish folk music; isn't it still Irish folk music when sung by an Australian or an American? One may also quibble whether every song by every folk singer who is/was Irish ought to roll up to Irish folk music - but that's a problem with all the daughter categories. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 21:42, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support By "nationality" just sounds weird. They're not people.★Trekker (talk) 18:28, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename, by nationality is at least as inaccurate as by country. Perhaps a midway solution could be "by country culture" but we do not have any other container categories by that parameter. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:52, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment nationality is wrong; but are we still ascribing songs by "country" - it should be "artist nationality" as formulated in the first category nominated. Most of the daughter categories contain "Joe Blow songs" where Joe Blow is of the nationality of the daughter category. We've had this discussion before about whether songs have nationalities or countries. I don't remember how it came out but I contend that they do not. If they do; they change nationalities whenever covered by someone "foreign"? Carlossuarez46 (talk) 21:38, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
An attempt to rename the parent Category:Songs by country to "by artist nationality", similar to what was done with the scheme for Category:Albums by artist nationality, was made 10 years ago. While most of the categories are attributed based on the nationality of the singer or band who recorded the songs, there were too many other possibilities as to what would make a song "American" or "Irish" or "Japanese" (e.g. national anthems, traditional folk songs). StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 22:17, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Carlossuarez46, that depends on the song. If a Mongolian or a Samoan sings Sean South and/or Follow Me up to Carlow (Youtube), they will remain overtly Irish songs. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 22:22, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@BrownHairedGirl: The use of "Irish" in regards to folk music indicates not only origin but stylistic attributes, hence the citations to overtly "Irish" isn't nationality specific; the List of Irish ballads has Irish ballads composed other than in Ireland. Musicologists can probably identify "Irish folk music" regardless of who wrote it, where it was composed, or who sang it. Is that likely true with respect to Irish hip-hop, Canadian soft rock? Nothing indicates that a song has a nationality in the first place - which we have previously debated - does it depend on the composer (what if there's more than one, with different nationalities), where it was composed (a song "from" somewhere akin to how we categorize people), who recorded it (so covers can make a Fooish song into a non-Fooish song?) or where it debuted or something else? A folk song may remain "Irish" as you suppose on covers, but if a Mongolian composer/performer changes the song, does the resultant work cease to be "Irish" or become "Mongolian"? For example: Category:Fleetwood Mac songs are categorized in both American and British categories; songs which have been covered (notably) by other singers roll up to those singers' nationalities; America (My Country, 'Tis of Thee) sung to the tune of God Save the Queen is categorized under American songs even though the tune was composed elsewhere (perhaps the UK, perhaps not God Save the Queen) or Deutschlandlied music written by an Austrian isn't categorized as an Austrian song. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 23:55, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all except Folk songs which should be renamed as proposed. These are really silly categories, because you are mixing up arrangement (i.e. the way the song is played) and nationality/country. Take the song When Irish Eyes Are Smiling under the proposed schemes you might need Category:Irish folk songs written by American Jewish songwriters (who never visited Ireland). Then if I record and make famous(and somebody probably has!) a Rhythm & Blues version of it, where do we put it then? The underlying problem is songs do not have a nationality, a passport or a place of residence, and the genre of the song can change by artist, by performance and by the ear of the listener. Then to make matters worse you want to conjoin these two. Not necessary, misleading and shows a great disregard for great music. NB Also already covered by artist by nationality. --Richhoncho (talk) 08:28, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Procedural comment: deleting container categories while the subcategories are kept (because they have not been nominated) does not make sense. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:53, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

per WP:SMALLCAT thins is a ludicrous nomination; if you look on the left hand side of the page there is a Languages section, check the home language - >45 pages at present; also, on the left side under Tools, What links here you can find maybe a dozen or so English pages which currently should be added to the category; also, read WP:SMALLCAT re future potential, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 12:23, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Maculosae tegmine lyncis: if and when those other articles are created, then we can reconsider. But right now, we have a two-article category which serves no purpose. • Purge, the two inhabited islands are far away from the town. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:18, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
May I suggest you address your administrative concerns to the Japanese government - once they are in agreement, perhaps the islands might be recategorized, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 08:01, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The town and the two remote islands are apparently part of the same municipality, but the category is about the town (part of the "Populated places" tree) and the town does not coincide with the municipality. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:58, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
"What is a city but the people?" (Shakespeare/Sophocles/Thucydides) Japanese municipalities, whether "city", "town", or "village", are an administrative layer - were one to fall from the moon and land, for instance, in Usa, one would find oneself subject alike to municipal, prefectural, and national government and administration; one passes immediately from one municipality to the next (as the road signs attest), even where the "urban centre", such that it is, is dozens of kilometres away, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 19:40, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • We do not have categories of municipalities, we have categories of populated places. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:57, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Are you recommending additional categories? eg Matsumae (Matsumae) and Matsumae (not Matsumae) or Matsumae (qua town as populated place) Matsumae (qua town as administrative construct) Matsumae (qua lieu imaginaire) Matsumae (qua...) etc? Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 20:07, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Not at all, I have no idea what brought you to that thought. Marcocapelle (talk) 04:59, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
How would you categorize pages on a large number of notable uninhabited islands in one municipality? Also, Category:Islands of Edinburgh and Liberty Island, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 07:58, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • They should be in an islands category, not in a town category. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:35, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • So, you're proposing a separate category for the two islands that are part of the town? The islands are part of the town, so they belong in the category about the town. All this splitting hairs is getting ridiculous. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:13, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • You seem to be thinking that the category can't cover both the populated place and the municipality at the same time. These categories do exactly that. Additionally, there's no reason the islands can't be in all three categories (or two, if they are inhabited). They are part of the town itself, whether they have people living on them or not. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 07:28, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    • @Shooterwalker: The accepted number of articles to avoid SMALLCAT seems to be 5, based on reading through many, many of these discussions. Additionally, many of these cats are very highly populated on jawiki, which indicates a "realistic potential for growth", one of the SMALLCAT reasons given fornot deleting. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 21:04, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: Merge Timrollpickering (talk) 10:08, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT, almost suitable for WP:C2F. Contains only the head article Manoj Comics ... plus Crookbond, which redirects to Manoj Comics. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 08:21, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Only two pages: Mapoon, Queensland and Agnew Airport. No sign of anything with which to expand the category. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 08:17, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: Delete Timrollpickering (talk) 10:05, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Contains only two articles (Merenre Nemtyemsaf I and Pyramid of Merenre), and the head article shows little scope for expanding the category. The two articles are already well-categorised, so no need to merge. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 07:56, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Disambiguation. This category is for the family of United States Vice President Levi P. Morton. The head article Morton family is about a fictional English family. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 01:36, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Mortimer family (English nobility). bibliomaniac15 00:07, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: disambiguation. The article Mortimer family is about a different family, notable for their involvement in rugby league. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 01:33, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • 'Nobility' instead of 'aristocracy' is definitely an improvement. I am neutral about adding 'English'. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:47, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. bibliomaniac15 00:05, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT, and confused terminology. Only two articles in this cat: Monadology is a a philosophical book by Gottfried Leibniz and Monism is a philosophical concepts, but this category parented in Category:Calculus. So far as I can see, the only link to calculus here is that Leibniz also did a lot of work on calculus. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 01:21, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - send this back to the universal substance from which it was created. Grutness...wha? 04:43, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, category contains two entirely unrelated articles. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:05, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge to Category:Monism. This may not be the ideal solution, but it prevents the eponymous article (largely on a book by Leibnitz) being orphaned. Leibnitz and Newton were independently the devisers of calculus, but that seems quite separate. Peterkingiron (talk) 17:28, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
