Category:Female harem anime and manga[edit]

The result of the discussion was: merge. Given the existence of the "male harem" counterpart, it will be appropriate to redirect the nominated category page. – Fayenatic London 21:32, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: The harem genre is assumed to be female by default, thus why male-based harems are referred to as "reverse harems". This category is superfluous and represents overcategorization. Harems centered on female protagonists surrounded by female suitors can be grouped into Category:LGBT harem anime and manga. The result of the discussion was: soft merge (non-admin closure) Marcocapelle (talk) 04:31, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: The scope of these two categories are nearly identical, and semantically "condensed matter" is physics terminology. They both point to condensed matter physics as the primary wiki article, and the only other thing in category Category:Condensed matter is Category:Solid-state chemistry. 〈 Forbes72 | Talk 〉 13:52, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge North African to African, keep Category:African footballers‎. – Fayenatic London 13:03, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: These categories are not useful, we do not have categories for footballers of other world regions. S.A. Julio (talk) 02:43, 31 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Note while we do have continental sportspeople categories, the only sport-specific continental categories that exist are for the individual disciplines of swimming and athletics. I do not see much of a purpose for this container category, all the nationality categories are already included in Category:Association football players by nationality, and each nationality category is already a subcategory of the continental categories (for example, Category:Algerian footballers is a few levels below Category:African sportspeople). S.A. Julio (talk) 01:35, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
We have them. We probably should not have them. Continents are places; they are not the exclusive abode of nationalities. Nations straddle multiple continents. Laurel Lodged (talk) 12:26, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename. – Fayenatic London 12:54, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: The team held the name of Washington Football Team for 2 seasons until being renamed to the Washington Commanders. Prior to that, the team was named the Washington Redskins. This page was moved from Washington Redskins player stubs on July 27th, 2020, as a result of the last team rebrand.

The category currently contains 57 pages and the name is not representative of the content within it, as the most recent season article in this category is for the 2003 season, before the team was even named the Washington Football Team. This category is meant to represent the franchise's season articles that are stubs, and it would make more sense to have it under the Washington Commanders name or to revert to the title it had pre-move (Washington Redskins season stubs). • Merge/rename -- We should follow the practice of alumni categories where merged or renamed institutions take the name of the successor. Peterkingiron (talk) 14:57, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - the designation of "Washington Commanders" is for the franchise, not just teams with that name. (The category actually already uses this logic, with the inclusion of seasons from the team's history in Boston before moving to Washington.) As such, the category name should be updated to reflect the current name of the franchise. -fuzzy510 (talk) 05:46, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Rusyn villages[edit]

The result of the discussion was: delete. – Fayenatic London 14:24, 8 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: The Rusyn communities category currently contains two subcategories - Rusyn cities and Rusyn villages. I do not think these categories are needed. It would be much more practical to sort communities by their country like in the Ukrainian communities category, not by type. YoungstownToast (talk) 23:03, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete per WP:NONDEF, many articles do not contain any information about Rusyns and where there is information (e.g. in the articles of the five cities) the Rusyns are a very small minority. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:39, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Query In what sense are they Rusyn? Are they 100% Rusyn? Is it 1 old lady and her Rusyn cat? Would it be more accurate to state Category:Populated places with Rusyn majorities? Can we guarantee that they are majorities? If not, what's the purpose of the categories? Laurel Lodged (talk) 16:30, 25 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
None of the villages/cities are 100% Rusyn. Some of them have Rusyn majorities, but not all. The villages/cities listed have Rusyns, Rusyn speakers, or had Rusyns historically. YoungstownToast (talk) 18:39, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per Marcocapelle and NONDEF. Just took a look at some of the articles and, like Ňagov for example, there is nothing there to define them as Rusyn communities. No Great Shaker (talk) 11:49, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Support The proposition that this category could be WP:NONDEF makes no sense as whether communities are wholely Rusyn or majority Rusyn (presently or historically) is simple to establish through proper sourcing. (I would argue based on the work of historians such as Paul Robert Magocsi that the significance of some of these locales as Rusyn cultural centers is independent of majority population.) Additionally, the inclusion of data within the category can easily be supported through sources from historians and modern or historical censuses. I can go through the locations myself, one-by-one, and provide the relevant sources, but the process will take a couple weeks.
In my opinion, making an attempt to define and source the information would be more constructive than attempting a drive-by deletion.
Edit (18:50, 28 March 2022 (UTC)): Above position changed. Previous vote struck.

Thanks for pointing this out. I misunderstood the purpose of the "relisting" KaerbaqianRen💬 18:50, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • We do not categorize populated places by every small ethnic minority. If you find sources to prove the existance of these minorities, feel free to start a list instead of a category. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:11, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Your assertion above does not fall under WP:NONDEF; I'm not sure which guidelines it would. However, this is already quite a substantial category and yet at the moment mostly consisting only of locations within Slovakia. It has potential for expansion with further inclusion of locations in Galicia and Zakarpattia Oblast. And in that regard, is not WP:SMALL--if that is what you are trying to express. KaerbaqianRen💬 18:50, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • I wasn't suggesting WP:SMALL. As mentioned earlier, WP:NONDEF is applicable here. Populated places aren't primarily known for every small ethnic minority that lives there. Marcocapelle (talk) 11:14, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Regardless, these locations are historically majority Rusyn at least as far back as beginning of the 19th century and through the mid-to-late 20th century.

  • Comment -- I am puzzled by this one as to what the difference is between Old and New Church Slavonic. One of the criteria seems to be whether it is written in Glagolitic or Cyrillic script. My guess is that the works of the two authors remained current as a result of being transcribed into the later script. Peterkingiron (talk) 15:09, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: While this may fit Category:Nepotism, ultimately this looks WP:NONDEF, with weird title. Brandmeistertalk 16:59, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment, if fully populated the category would mainly contain monarchs. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:39, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment -- I created the category to help document how many national leaders are children of previous leaders, in non-dynastic families. I think this is a very useful category. It may not be a hugely significant trait in the life of any single person, but collectively, as a category, I think this list of names documents a cluster of similar patterns. I await the replies of the community. Pete unseth (talk) 18:00, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • If this is a notable topic at all it would be better to create a list. Besides if this is not about monarchs the page title should clearly say so. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:07, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per WP:NONDEF, not a hugely significant trait in the life of any single person in this category. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:07, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retain - As Marcocapelle noted, this category is "not a hugely significant trait in the life of any single person in this category". My idea for this category is not that it is so significant in the life of each, but rather that the groups is significant. Pete unseth (talk) 18:17, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep but rename. It seems that the intent is to include elected leaders who are not technically head of state (i.e. Westminster parliaments) and to exclude monarchs and dynastic families (for whom this feature is assumed, and non-defining). How about "Elected leaders who are children of former elected leaders"? I'm sure a better wordsmith can come up with something more fitting. I disagree about nepotism: besides the Kims (who are a dynastic family) most of the names on this list were not appointed to their position by their parent. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 18:29, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I also disagree about non-defining: besides the Kims (who I didn't check) all but one of the current member articles mentions that person's parent in the lede, and with only two exceptions in the first paragraph. Anecdotally: Justin Trudeau (who is not currently on the list but there's a dispute about adding the category on that talk page) hasn't done a single controversial thing in his entire premiership without some white-haired pundit comparing his action to what they surmise his father, Pierre Trudeau, would have done in the same circumstance. However, reading through these articles it's clear that "elected" is completely the wrong word to use. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 18:36, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
And all that being said, I also endorse the creation of a list article for this (under a better title) though the existence of a list doesn't automatically preclude the existence of a companion category. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 18:39, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep (possibly renamed). I do not understand why George H.W. Bush is not included, even though he was not his father's immediate successor. However the category should either exclude monarchies or treat them (together) as a single subcategory. A title that would bring in Justin Trudeau might be appropriate, though he is head of government, not head of state. Peterkingiron (talk) 19:34, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per NONDEF. Ludicrous category. No Great Shaker (talk) 23:08, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Smerge any articles/categories on the families overall into Category:Political families - other than that, delete. Grutness...wha? 23:51, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete Why exactly is not Elizabeth II on this list? For most of human history most states had the explicit plan that in most cases the new head would be the child of the last. To be fair most states in human history were extremely small, and lots of them we do not have articles on. Despite our claim that all heads of state are default notable, we probably have articles on less than half of all heads of state ever. However that does not change the fact that this is way, way too common to de defining.John Pack Lambert (talk) 20:28, 4 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak delete – As noted by others, the title of this category is a bit wonky and unnecessarily contorted, and it is to some degree non-defining. The apparent intent here is to create a grouping of "Children of non-monarchical national leaders who became national leaders" (head of government and/or of state). That does not sound like an essential—defining—characteristics of an individual. Rather, it sounds like a title of a stand-alone list article. I would find such an article quite interesting. Drdpw (talk) 16:11, 5 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    • Unless it should also have George W. Bush and John Quincy Adams, I believe it also has the idea of directly succeeding in there, so "Children of non-monarchial national leaders who became national leader direct after their parent". I also am not confident that the line between a monarchical and non-monarchical leader is clear enough to categorize on.John Pack Lambert (talk) 17:44, 4 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete Poorly thought out, non-defining category. No value in lumping Bush Sr, Junior, a bunch of monarchs, and by the looks of the pending Philippines election, Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and Jr.. ValarianB (talk) 20:09, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Suggest -- Category:Elected leaders following parent. Having two generations of the same family as elected leaders is unusual, but it applies to George Bush, Trudeau, William Pitt, Marcos. Similarly in North Korea, Syria, and a few more where elections are not free. Peterkingiron (talk) 15:15, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • The word "elected" is questionable in cases when no free elections take place. There was an objection against this word earlier in this discussion as well. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:58, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Further comment (already voted delete): meanwhile George Bush junior has been removed from the category while Bush was positioned in the header of the category page as a prime example. Moreover, I think the category no longer contains any properly elected leader. If the category is kept (which is meanwhile even more dubious than before) the header of the category page should be rewritten. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:25, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Note: I have trimmed the header to read, This category is meant to include children who followed their parents as heads of state. It includes both dictators and elected leaders, but not royal successors. Drdpw (talk) 18:54, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose it is clearly being disputed at the article talk page. Work it out there first -- 65.92.247.17 (talk) 22:24, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: either name is technically suitable. However, 'transit of Mercury' appears to have more frequent usage in published scientific papers than 'Mercury transit'. The current naming scheme is consistent with other transit articles. (Cf. Category:Astronomical transits.) But if we do change this then we should change the others based on the same logic.
