Crimes in the United States[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge and delete. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 10:43, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Scattered monthly categories with 1 article each. Merge all as above. No need to merge to YYYY crimes in the United States since the articles are already populated there. –Aidan721 (talk) 22:28, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support While month/year can be a valid way to break down larger categories, this grouping takes it too far. - RevelationDirect (talk) 22:41, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge/delete per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:04, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete. Favonian (talk) 13:41, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Empty category which housed a number of navboxes, all of which were just deleted with consensus over at TfD. Highly unlikely that any templates which are both worthy of inclusion and appropriate for this category are likely to be made. fuzzy510 (talk) 21:03, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Fuzzy510: You can just speedy tag this per WP:C1, as long as it wasn't emptied out of process. - RevelationDirect (talk) 22:44, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Yes, this is an empty category. Next time, tag it CSD C1, it doesn't need a week-long discussion. Liz Read! Talk! 01:09, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Liz @RevelationDirect Apologies, I hardly ever do anything for deletion with CfD, and I interpreted the guidelines (empty for at least a week) a bit too literally. Will speedy tag if this comes up again. -fuzzy510 (talk) 06:30, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Delete No problem. - RevelationDirect (talk) 07:09, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Bougainville politics stubs[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Papua New Guinea stubs. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 10:46, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Underpopulated stub category created for just one article with no indication of WikiProject approval. As always, stub categories are not free for just any editor to create on a whim for just a small handful of articles -- the minimum size bar for a stub category is 60 articles, and for that reason stub categories have to be authorized by Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting before they're allowed to be created. But there's just one article here, which isn't enough to warrant a dedicated category. And while there are a handful of other articles related to Bougainvillean politics sitting in the parent Category:Papua New Guinea stubs, there are nowhere near 59 of them, so there's no evidence that this can be populated enough to earn admission. Bearcat (talk) 20:46, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge to Category:Papua New Guinea stubs, as an out of process creation. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:09, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom. I did not realize when I created the category, that this was out of process and will definitely not do so again. Sorry about that. TartarTorte 13:07, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have now read the rules at WP:NEWSTUB to familiarize myself with them. Apologies for the inconvenience. TartarTorte 13:11, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Fires in South America by year[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 10:47, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: merge per WP:SMALLCAT, these categories mostly contain 1-3 articles. Especially in later years merging to a year disaster category in South America is unnecessary when articles are already in a year disaster by country category. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:09, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom. –Aidan721 (talk) 21:47, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge too granular to aid navigation between articles, per WP:SMALLCAT. - RevelationDirect (talk) 22:45, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose it is procidure to categorize fires by continent and year. Merging would just add to the confusion. There is also certainly area for growth, as many South American disasters (including fires) haven't recived the amount of attention as disasters in North America have, SmallCat doesn't apply. Inter&anthro (talk) 17:30, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • The nomination exactly aims to end this "procedure" because there is not enough content by year by continent. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:14, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No objection to recreation if they grow to 5+ articles. - RevelationDirect (talk) 19:39, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Rulers of Styria[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Medieval nobility of the Holy Roman Empire and Category:History of Styria. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 10:52, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT 2 C, 0 P. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 01:24, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Alt merge to Category:Medieval nobility of the Holy Roman Empire. Styria was not part of Austria yet. And also merge to Category:History of Styria. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:16, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well-spotted. Shortly after the March of Styria was elevated to the Duchy of Styria in 1180, it came into the hands of the Babenbergs of Austria in 1192, so both the Margraves and Dukes fit in medieval HRE nobility, and the Dukes also in medieval Austrian nobility. Merge to History of Styria is also a good idea. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 11:06, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support alt per Marco. Laurel Lodged (talk) 10:24, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose "rulers" is an appropriately vague term to cover margraves of Styria and other titles who were usually also ruling elsewhere. These are more than mere nobility. Peterkingiron (talk) 18:07, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.

Nominator's rationale: Most have 1-2 articles per month. WP:OVERCAT. Merge to month year events category. Do not need to merge to year sports category since all are already somewhere in that tree. –Aidan721 (talk) 19:00, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: Rename. - jc37 02:07, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: To match spelling of most other articles and categories related to the topic Artifact (error), including the subcategory Category:Computer graphic artifacts. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 18:05, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support: Most of intitle:"Artefact" is redirects and intitle:"Artifact" has far more results, plus all the article in this category which use the word spell it with an I. Makes sense to keep things consistent. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 18:54, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak support whilst artefact vs artifact is an WP:ENGVAR issue (artefact being the common UK spelling), it is sensible to make it consistent with articles and other categories, all of which appear to be using the US spelling artifact. Joseph2302 (talk) 13:16, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: keep. No real arguments for deletion have been offered. I was informed by Marcocapelle (talk · contribs) that category contents had already been purged at the time of the original closure. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 12:27, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This is a mixture of families that ruled as Hetmans and those who were descendants of families that used to rule as Hetmans without themselves being Hetman. Plus Don Cossacks were different from Zaporizhian Cossacks. It's all too confused. Laurel Lodged (talk) 17:13, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. I see a description of the category contents, plus a factoid. But no rationale for deletion given at all, no relation to the guidelines on categorization at all.  —Michael Z. 15:20, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Can't we just purge content about Don Cossacks (if there is any) and remove the confusing header? Marcocapelle (talk) 18:28, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If we purge the Don Cossacks, what is left that is not already in Category:Zaporozhian Cossack nobility? Laurel Lodged (talk) 20:21, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • That seems a fair point, but in order to solve that, all content of this tree should be merged somewhere. It will be a massive amount of work. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:51, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment, Laurel Lodged, it seems that you do not understand the principle understanding of what Zaporizhian Cossacks are. For you they are just whatever Cossacks as the rest articles about Russian "Cossacks", including the so-called Don Cossacks. One of the main goals of the Khmelnytskyi Uprising was acknowledgement of the Cossacks in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth as nobles the same with what in Polish known as "Szlachta" (part of the Estates of the realm). The Don Cossacks situation is very different. They were adopted in the Russian Empire as a separate community of people, not really within the estates of the realm. Nominator's rationale: WP:PRIMARYTOPIC Pageviews show a primary topic. (https://pageviews.wmcloud.org/?project=en.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&redirects=0&range=latest-20&pages=Hamilton_College_(New_York)%7CHamilton_College_(England)%7CHamilton_College,_South_Lanarkshire%7CHamilton_College_(Iowa)%7CHamilton_College_(Kentucky) and per WP:CATNAME, Names of topic categories should be singular, normally corresponding to the name of a Wikipedia article which in this case would match Hamilton College. Wozal (talk) 16:15, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Birmingham is not the primary topic and the longstanding mismatch with the category name acknowledges as much. - RevelationDirect (talk) 22:57, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Not remotely a WP:CATDEF. Countries add or remove official languages sometimes, or have different statues for different languages, and other sorts of legal wrangling. That doesn't make them part of some overarching group linked to other countries who may or may not have done similar. The geographical aspect is another layer of arbitrariness on top. Nominator's rationale: Nominating many 19th century yearly fire cats in US and North America. Most have 1-2 articles yearly. Merge up to century or decade as listed above. This tree will require some subsequent nominations to cleanup the remainder but not want to overload with too much at once. –Aidan721 (talk) 00:28, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge/delete per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:11, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge/delete per nom. This is also same reason as the European categories for fires listed above, and we should have the same outcome for both (which looks to be delete or merge as appropriate). Joseph2302 (talk) 14:21, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
