The result of the discussion was: merge all as nominated. (non-admin closure) HouseBlastertalk 02:20, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: overly specific triple intersection of nationality, occupation and political orientation (WP:NARROWCAT). Place Clichy (talk) 23:16, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Support per nom. Mason (talk) 00:32, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. (non-admin closure) HouseBlastertalk 13:57, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Following the discussion at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 November 16#Category:Arab people of Belgian descent, ethnic categories should be reserved for individuals who are identified as Arabs in reliable sources, rather than being used as containers for countries. The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:African diaspora in the Middle East. (non-admin closure) HouseBlastertalk 02:19, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Overlapping categories, the content will fit into the Middle East category. Yorkporter (talk) 20:56, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Paintings by Lorenzo Costa the Elder[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Paintings by Lorenzo Costa. (non-admin closure) HouseBlastertalk 02:18, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Italian painter Lorenzo Costa is universally known as Lorenzo Costa, like its shown in the English language and other Wikipedias. He is sometimes called "The Elder" not to be confused with his grandson, Lorenzo Costa the Younger, but its rare and not that usual. In the Encyclopaedia Britannica he also appears as Lorenzo Costa: [1]Mistico Dois (talk) 19:59, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nominator's rationale and per consistency with the article's title. --Cavarrone 13:30, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Foreign Ministers of X[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Rename as proposed (excepting the stricken nominations). One comment and one weak oppose does not override three full supports based on MOS:JOBTITLES; I also took into account the implicit appeal to WP:C2D (the article being ministry of foreign affairs). HouseBlastertalk 21:44, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Per MOS:JOBTITLE, job titles should not be capitalised.
This nomination is a result of this discussion. Pinging @Naraht. Qwerfjkltalk 18:47, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Foreign ministers" is a common enough term for the governmental position. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:44, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ministry of foreign affairs might disagree with you. Qwerfjkltalk 21:25, 22 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Maybe, but throughout that article the term "foreign minister" is used. So if someone would propose to rename all of them to "ministers of foreign affairs", I would probably stay neutral. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:03, 23 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Marcocapelle, sorry if it wasn't clear, but I was agreeing with you. My comment was addressed to Liz. My point was, as you say, that that article uses the term "foreign ministers" . Qwerfjkltalk 21:22, 23 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak oppose. Per Liz, it seems to me that "Foreign Ministers" avoids ambiguity. But it's not a major issue either way. Aridd (talk) 11:53, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: dual merge to Category:Treaties extended to dependent territories in Asia and Category:Treaties extended to dependent territories of Japan. (non-admin closure) HouseBlastertalk 02:17, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Also merge to Category:Treaties extended to dependent territories in Asia. Only one page in it at present. toobigtokale (talk) 17:58, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The above is preserved as an archive of the discussion. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.

Category:Trees of Subarctic America[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge all to Category:Trees of North America, which will be renamed to Category:Trees of Northern America. (non-admin closure) HouseBlastertalk 02:38, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: I'm also proposing the renaming of Category:Trees of North America to Category:Trees of Northern America in line with the definition and name used by the World Geographical Scheme for Recording Plant Distributions and the merger of all the subcategories to the renamed botanical continent category.

This would eliminate an inconsistently used set of categories that is not well defined as there is no botanical separation of Trees from Shrubs. It will reduce the amount of WP:OVERCAT and be similar to a previous merger of all the national categories for tree to the umbrella Category:Trees of Europe in 2015.

I considered merging all the categories to their equivalent "Flora of X" category, but as the Tree categories have not been well managed I think it would have more potential to introduce error than simply merging them up and it keeps the subcategories like Category:Arboreta in Iowa and Category:Individual Douglas firs and so on in a tree category.

If this proposal is not successful I will try to clean up the categories by starting to remove trees from the "Flora of" categories and placing them in their equivalent "Trees of" categories and creating all the missing categories. 🌿MtBotany (talk) 17:25, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support Pruning, for the sake of editors who might not know the background of this proposal, for a long time at WP:Wikiproject Plants these "Trees of foo..." categories have been been basically ignored, and therefore inconsistently applied, by project members. Moreover, most tree species have wide ranges (such as "the Rockies" or "the deserts of North America") and breaking them down to states is pointless. I can predict that most Wikiproject Plants editors will object to removing the "Flora of ..." categories, as these are well maintained. Abductive (reasoning) 20:39, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Clarification, I'm not proposing to merge any "Flora of..." categories. In the proposal I was mentioning the possibility of merging "Trees of Subartic America" to "Flora of Subartic America" and the rest to their equivalent Flora categories, but thought it not as good an option as merging to Northern America.
My end comment is about what to do IF this proposal is not successful because editors think they are useful. I think it would be good to actually try to make the various "Trees of..." categories sensible by not having trees in both "Flora of Place" and the equivalent "Trees of Place" categories at the same time. So I will do my best to make it work if that is what the community prefers. Though the better option is all to one larger trees option and using "Flora of..." for distribution. 🌿MtBotany (talk) 22:21, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support upmerging Ideally I would prefer the "Trees of" categories completely removed, since there is no clear botanical definition of the term "tree". But upmerging is better than the current muddle. Peter coxhead (talk) 08:23, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support upmerging, in line with Peter coxhead's reasoning. Declangi (talk) 00:55, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete. (non-admin closure) HouseBlastertalk 02:16, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: There is no definition, article, or categorization scheme for Literature albums on Wikipedia, and the two articles placed in the category are in Category:Spoken word albums by Irish artists, which should be sufficient. Nominator's rationale: Unnecessary eponymous category for one additional related article. WP:OCEPON. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 15:10, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Support per nominator's rational. Clearly unnecessary. 🌿MtBotany (talk) 18:33, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. signed, Rosguill talk 00:28, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Upmerge as there's only one page in here. John Speed map of Canaan describes the "Land of Israel", the fact that Phoenicia is on the map isn't really a defining feature. Mason (talk) 13:54, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Only category is about the ottoman empire (Category:Maps of the Ottoman Empire‎), which isn't the same as Turkey. Child category is already in the appropriate categories. Mason (talk) 13:30, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 13:50, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Upmerge for now. It doesn't aid navigation to have 1 category in here. Mason (talk) 13:22, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. This is the same as country as the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, whose categories are being split off from former Yugoslavia in separate RFDs. The logic of {{EstcatCountry}} is to merge different country names under the latest ones, so this one for S&M should probably pick up the FRY ones, and then we'd have 2 decades here instead of just 1? --Joy (talk) 16:08, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I added or edited a fair few redirects and categories to demonstrate this. (It should not be taken to prejudice the other CFD discussions, can be reverted at will.) --Joy (talk) 16:22, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 13:52, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Non defining for every drug in this category. Whether it was a breakthrough therapy or not would become entirely irrelevant once it's approved. In contrast, other ways that drugs are classified such as the mechanism of action, manufacturer, chemical structure etc. remain relevant. (t · c) buidhe 04:35, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 13:53, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Completely redundant with each other. JDDJS (talk to mesee what I've done) 23:54, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. They're not redundant or even the exact same thing. Not all assassins are contract killers. See Category:Assassins and Category:Contract killers. AHI-3000 (talk) 23:57, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge Per WP:OVERLAPCAT and possibly WP:SUBJECTIVECAT as well, depending on how one defines a contract killer. An example of overcategorization in which one mostly overlaps the other. We aren't obliged to make subcategories for every possible variation and permutation of the subject. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 05:30, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
merge per ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ Mason (talk) 05:45, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Assassin =/= contract killer in every case. Someone who assassinates for personal or political motives is not the same thing as a hired killer who murders for money. AHI-3000 (talk) 06:29, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • @AHI-3000: it may help when you give a few examples of characters in Category:Fictional assassins who assassinate for personal or political motives. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:44, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't believe they are totally redundant, but I do believe they are so similar as to be unnecessarily confusing and overlapping. What ultimately matters is that someone is an assassin, not the specific motives behind their actions, which may change from job to job even in the same work. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 07:29, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
      • In real life there is also a distinction between a contract killer and an assassin. I do not explicitly oppose yet because I am not so sure if the distinction is equally clear-cut in fiction. Hence my comment to AHI-300. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:28, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: Needa a third-party judgment on whether the categories are duplicative.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, –LaundryPizza03 (d) 01:48, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support: Not all assassins are contract killers, sure, but since this is going the other way I don't think that distinction necessarily matters. On the other hand, I don't see why it would make sense to say all contract killers are assassins, and the argument that the similarity between the terms is close enough to create confusion and redundancy makes sense to me. • Merge per nom (or delete if the target is deleted). I expected the category to contain mainly fictional populated places (cities, towns, villages) in which case I might have opposed, but it appears to be not that clear cut. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:51, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
