Nominator's rationale: Seems to be an arbitrary distinction, destination category could be renamed to "destroyed settlements". –DMartin 18:58, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Relisting comment: Merge both?
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, CLYDE TALK TO ME/STUFF DONE 18:48, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think that merging both is a great suggestion. Towns and cities aren't really the core feature of the category, like a destroyed place is destroyed regardless of whether it's a town or city. Mason (talk) 19:00, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: keep. (non-admin closure) (t · c) buidhe 14:21, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Title should be plural not singular Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (talk to the cutest Wikipedian) 01:32, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. The first paragraph of the Kofun article says "Kofun were mainly constructed in ..." suggesting that Kofun can be used as plural. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:21, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Kofun is both singular and plural. The term "kofuns" does not exist in academia. --MChew (talk) 01:52, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Per WP:TRIVIAL. The location of a body when or if it is dissected is a non-defining characteristic. User:Namiba 19:07, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:20, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Delete. is indeed trivial Mason (talk) 01:19, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Listify - Actually, in this case, where the bodies were, was notable. See also Burning of Winchester Medical College, etc. That said, the current title doesn't give any sense of the significance. So it would need to be renamed at the very least. But when I was considering rename possibilities, it became clear that the entries really could use some clarification, and so, per WP:BEFORECAT, this should probably be a list. - jc37 01:30, 24 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: no consensus for nominator's proposal. There is consensus to rename them both to "Foo in the medieval Islamic world". (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 20:10, 19 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Follow-up to Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 August 31#Category:Viziers of the medieval Islamic world (closed as no consensus). As closer suggested, we should start over. The basic argument remains the same: the "medieval Islamic world" was not a "country", but we can rearrange these categories as part of the Category:Medieval people by occupation tree. I did all the preparatory work this time, following Marcocapelle's successful Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 August 18#Heads of government. I created Category:Medieval government officials as the merge target and populated and parented it already, as well as creating the new Category:Government officials by century tree to go along with it.
The Officials cat will be a simple Merge. The Viziers cat will be a simple Rename. NLeeuw (talk) 20:32, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Marcocapelle and Fayenatic london: pinging participants of previous discussion for follow-up. NLeeuw (talk) 20:36, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Still oppose and I am not sure there is any merit in starting this over. I have argued before that 1) there is no need for categorizing by country per se and 2) that categorization by cultural region is the most convenient solution for not having countries altogether. The medieval islamic world was mostly organized by short-living dynasties with varying territories, not by stable countries where one dynasty succeeded another while the country remained the same like in Europe. Many dynasty categories do not have enough biography articles for a very detailed subcategorization by occupation. Marcocapelle (talk) 03:36, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Marcocapelle I'm sad that you don't agree. As a historian, I must object to the simplistic idea that [in Europe, there were] stable countries where one dynasty succeeded another while the country remained the same. That is a very modern Western European point of view. I've spent many years writing about war of succession, and List of wars of succession in Europe. As I wrote some years ago, Moreover, the legal and political coherence of the various provinces of a 'state territory' [in Europe] often consisted merely in nothing more than having a common ruler (a personal union). Early government systems were therefore based on dynasties, the extinction of which immediately brought on a state crisis. And: Early medieval Europe was rife with conflicts over property or property rights. R. I. Moore (2000) characterised the situation as 'apparently endless and pointless internecine conflict which raged at every level of aristocratic society from the tenth century onwards. It continued everywhere in Latin Europe (though taking a somewhat different form to the east of the Rhine) throughout the eleventh century, and did not subside in most regions until well into the twelfth.' Countless dynasty-based states in Europe collapsed precisely due to succession disputes, and some of the worst wars in European history such as the War of the Spanish Succession were, as the name hints, caused by dynastic succession crises. A serious argument can be made that there have been more dynastic wars of succession than religious wars in Europe. We've just forgotten about them, because nobody (in Europe) remembers what absolute monarchy was like, but we do still know what religious conflict looks like. Anyway, perhaps this is a topic we should discuss privately, because I risk going offtopic here, even though I think it's important to explain why I think you are mistaken. Just like "the medieval Islamic world", Europe has always been dynastically unstable (until we invented constitutional monarchies and republics). NLeeuw (talk) 20:44, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • I agree that the statement was simplistic. There are also enough cases of unstable, small and/or short-living polities in medieval Europe. But that merely strengthens my argument, because in those cases historiography also often focuses on a longer lasting cultural region, and so we have categories for Anglo-Saxons, for Kievan Rus' people and (more dubious) for medieval Italians. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:09, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Since these have been re-nominated, how about renaming to "in" following the precedent for monarchs in continents? i.e. to Category:Officials in the medieval Islamic world and Category:Viziers in the medieval Islamic world. – Fayenatic London 14:07, 14 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree with the rename, that is slightly more precise. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:10, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: 1 article (Wilhelm Hendrik Franquinet) for which this is not defining. This 3-line biography tells us that Franquinet, born in Maastricht in 1785, educated in Antwerp, lived and worked in Maastricht in from 1804 to 1816, and settled in Paris in 1816. I doubt that the gap between the formation of the UK of the Netherlands in September 1815 and an unknwown date in 1816 allows us to consider that the nominated category appropriately describes someone that was, in fact, French before and after this "emigration". The result of the discussion was: dual merge to Category:Vietnamese families and Category:Political families. Nom proposed splitting, but then called for upmerging; given that there is only a single page in the category that would belong in both merge targets I am taking the distinction between a split and a dual merge to be semantics. The result of the discussion was: delete without prejudice against recreation if it can be populated. (non-admin closure) HouseBlastertalk 14:09, 18 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Improperly-named WP:SMALLCAT that was created just to hold one template that consists almost entirely of redlinks. Even if this were warranted, the template's naming as {{Alentejo Line stations}} cleary indicates that the topic has an English-language name, which would in turn mean that any category for it would also have to use that English-language name rather than a Portuguese name -- so no prejudice against future recreation of a Category:Alentejo Line once there are at least five things to file in it, but the category shouldn't be named in Portuguese and isn't needed just to hold a single template. Bearcat (talk) 04:34, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete for now per nom. There are very few articles about railway stations in Portugal to begin with and most of them are on the Algarve Line. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:53, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete for now. Although the main article is at Linha do Alentejo, there is just not enough content related to this railway line at this point. Place Clichy (talk) 05:54, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. This should be a category for mainspace articles so the template doesn't belong here. This is basically an empty category, alhough I suppose Barreiro railway station should be included. Still, that's a really small category that's not needed currently. Pichpich (talk) 21:06, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Films set in Tamil Nadu without prejudice against recreation if it can be populated. (non-admin closure) HouseBlastertalk 14:09, 18 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT created for just one film. As always, every place that exists does not automatically get its own dedicated "films set in [there]" the moment one film exists to file in it -- there would have to be at least five films to file here before a category was justified, and below five the films should just be categorized at the Tamil Nadu level. Navigation of the Wikipedia is not aided by obsessively winnowing everything down into narrow microcategories of one. Bearcat (talk) 04:12, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: small, overlapping categories that's not distinct from Coats of arms. Mason (talk) 04:04, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom. Coats of arms are usually associated with families! Although there are circumstances in which minor members of a family would take a modified coat of arms, and coats of arms attributed to organizations such as cities, I believe that to be the exception rather than the norm. @Smasongarrison: I took the liberty to combine three near-identical nominations, please revert that if I did not respect your intention. Nominator's rationale: Eponymous category for a small town without the volume of spinoff content needed to justify an eponymous category. The only thing that's been filed here is one event that certainly affected the town but wasn't limited to only that town alone, and the only other possible contents (based on a scan of the town's "what links here") are the town itself and one high school in it -- but that would only be three things, still falling short of the five things it takes to warrant an eponymous category. Nominator's rationale: Triple intersections of nationality, occupation and ethnicity, each created solely to overcategorize one or two people. Per WP:CATEGRS, people are not typically defined by this intersection of traits -- there isn't, for instance, any particular evidence that lawyers of Lebanese descent do the job differently than lawyers of Italian, Japanese, German, Finnish or Indonesian descent do, or that musicians of Nigerian descent sing differently than musicians of Ghanaian, Congolese or Liberian descent. Bearcat (talk) 03:52, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep for attorneys of Lebanese descent, it helps avoid stereotypes of Arab communities, especially with what is happening in the Middle East right now. It helps people to understand that the Arab-speaking communities are of a diverse collection of cultures, and that there are people from their community that have good jobs as educated professionals. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Starlighsky (talkcontribs)
  • Delete as I don't think that this intersection is defining. Also please remember to sign your comments. Mason (talk) 18:50, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep as it appears that categories pertaining to American legal professionals of Middle Eastern descent in general are underrepresented. Montgomery28 21:47:20 UTC, 11 October 2023
  • Delete as trivial intersections. I would add that Starlighsky's argument above that we should keep the Lebanese lawyers category to right wrong perceptions is an extremely weak one.
