The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete. (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 23:42, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: No category scheme for high school wrestling. I am suggesting upmerge to the parent category the one article isn't already in. The subcategory Category:High school wrestlers from Pennsylvania has been nominated separately for renaming. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 23:44, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:High school wrestlers from Pennsylvania[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 23:41, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: There is no scheme for high school wrestlers as the sports played in high school are not particularly defining to the individual and what made those individuals notable. The renamed category should then be placed in Category:American wrestlers, Category:Sportspeople from Pennsylvania, and Category:Wrestling in Pennsylvania. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 23:35, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The above is preserved as an archive of the discussion. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 23:40, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Upmerge for now. This category with only one category in it, is unhelpful for navigation Mason (talk) 22:55, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The above is preserved as an archive of the discussion. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.

Philadelphia street categories[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 23:43, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Ambiguous as there are multiple streets with these names that also have articles (and numerous others that don't): Chestnut Street, Front Street, and Walnut Street. Best to match the name of the category with the article name in such cases. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 22:50, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:42, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep as is Absent some other street category with these names, there is no need or basis for renaming it. Keystone18 (talk) 21:11, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes, I would never have commented if I hadn't. There are many Chestnut Streets, but only one Chestnut Street category, so there is zero basis for renaming it with any qualifiers at this point. If a category did emerge, then it would be a consideration. Keystone18 (talk) 16:35, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename per nom - disambiguation can occur even if there's not another category to specifically disambiguate against. SportingFlyer T·C 19:21, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:East German expatriates in Yugoslavia[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge as nominated. No prejudice against nominating the targets for deletion. (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 23:43, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Only one person in this category, which isn't helpful for navigation. Dual merge, it is a small intersection that doesn't help navigation. In the same spirit as Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2023_May_7#Emigrants_from_former_countries Mason (talk) 22:45, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 09:37, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge to expatriates but delete German expatriates/Italian expatriates as inaccurate as East Germany and Venice were both nations at one point, though I haven't checked to see who is in there. SportingFlyer T·C 20:21, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Both East and West Germany considered themselves as the rightful government of the undivided German nation, so I don't think it was a separate nation at any point. Re: Venice and the lone article for Antipope Alexander V, I think it is perfectly fine to consider him Italian. Despite being born in Venetian Crete, joining the Franciscans would indicate that he would belong to the Italian Catholic minority rather than the Greek Orthodox population. Also, before his election, he was most known for being bishop of several Italian sees and then archbishop of Milan. In fact I doubt that he belongs that much in an expatriate category, which I believe refers to his studies in Oxford and Paris. Place Clichy (talk) 14:27, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom. Place Clichy (talk) 14:27, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Non-binary computer scientists[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Non-binary scientists. (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 23:39, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Upmerge for now. There's not enough content to diffuse by type of non-binary scientist. The only archaeologists in this category India Logan-Riley is already in Category:New Zealand archaeologists, similarly for computer science. I haven't formed an opinion on whether is is a defining intersection, and do not intend for my nomination to be interpreted as such Mason (talk) 21:37, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • If the number of articles increases and if there is consensus that WP:EGRS does not apply we can easily recreate the categories. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:28, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I do agree that the level of acceptance is growing quickly (which is LOVELY). But, I think isolating non-binary scientists into very specific categories, makes them harder to find and appreciate. With this merge, these scientists will still be in a non-binary occupation category, just not one that this specific. Mason (talk) 22:50, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge the computer scinetists per nom. That is not a good category name, since they could be researchers into non-binary logic systems, such as balanced trinary, etc. -- 65.92.247.66 (talk) 08:46, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom. I'm not entirely sure that non-binary science is a topic, but I'm pretty sure that non-binary associated with these fields of science is not. This is one of those cases where WP:FINALRUNG applies. Place Clichy (talk) 14:31, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 23:38, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Buildings subcategory with a single entry, for a municipality of 2000 which does not have its own Location category, within a district which could have a Buildings subcategory but doesn't. Entirely out of sequence. Crowsus (talk) 19:36, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Recreation by city[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 23:44, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Per past precedents, rename to "by populated place" as categories include towns, cities, villages, etc. See: Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 February 2#Category:Education by city or townAidan721 (talk) 16:02, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename per precedent, "populated place" is becoming the new norm. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:38, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • Oppose I honestly strongly disagree with this, populated place is far less descriptive than city, harder for non-native speakers to understand, and almost if not all of the subcatted terms would be cities anyways. Disagree enough to the point where we should reconsider the last discussion. SportingFlyer T·C 19:02, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
      • Note that it is not an entirely new phenomenon, e.g. here is a discussion from 2010. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:20, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That did make things more concise, which is the opposite of what we're doing here. This is a really bad change. SportingFlyer T·C 23:12, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Rename per nom and per precedent. Omnis Scientia (talk) 22:15, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Rename per nom. @SportingFlyer I think PP is better because it really doesn't matter for these venues if the location is a city, town, or village. Mason (talk) 22:52, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's a distinction without a difference. Populated place is a term used only by the US census, it's not used naturally in English, there are very few if any towns or villages in these categories, and we ourselves define city as "A city is a human settlement of a notable size." That is perfect for any article that would possibly be categorised in one of these categories. SportingFlyer T·C 23:11, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
A sports venues, organization, or club is not defined by the size or political definition of its location. –Aidan721 (talk) 00:00, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: WP:NARROWCAT. Merge/delete. The lone articles are already in the parent trees, so an additional merge is unnecessary. –Aidan721 (talk) 18:20, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge all. (non-admin closure) Toadette (Let's discuss together!) 07:38, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This was made by a disruptive user, and it is more of a defining topic in real life than it is in fiction, where it can often be treated as just a fact of that fictional universe - is Mario on a killing spree when he gets a combo off 3 Goombas? Goombella shows that they are sentient creatures, after all... Having this level of refinement about the crimes of fictional characters seems unnecessary. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 19:41, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose, I don't see what the issue here is, nobody's going to list the likes of Mario as a spree killer. AHI-3000 (talk) 21:03, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The point I was trying to make is that someone could likely do so and feel they were justified. Fictionally, one could interpret it any number of ways, making such a category problematically subjective compared to real life. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 21:40, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well that's the thing about categories, AFAIK there's no official policy or rules requiring a source to justify adding a category to an article. Even if there is, just feel free to remove whatever you think is an incorrect category and explain why you think it doesn't fit, instead of suggesting that whole categories should be deleted over hypothetical scenarios of abuse and misuse. AHI-3000 (talk) 21:47, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The topic being WP:SUBJECTIVECAT is a reason though. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:25, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WP:CATV says that [i]t should be clear from verifiable information in the article why it was placed in each of its categories. HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 18:38, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As someone who edits in this area a lot, the category divisions between "spree" and "mass" killers tend to be very very blurry even if it's not fictional. The way people tend to decide which goes in which category (I'm not talking about fictional here) seems honestly to be 100% arbitrary and the whole definitional dispute over these terms has been going on forever (though mass killer has the unfortunate affect of overlapping with people who ordered political, state killings, who also tend to be tagged as this) This has always bothered me but there's no clean way to deal with it, alas.
Anyway this is sort of a microcosm of that issue, so I can't really vote. PARAKANYAA (talk) 05:31, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Like for example, mass killer used to mean serial killer and spree killer was basically used for what is now a mass killer, but then spree killer basically started to mean "mass killer who did it at multiple locations" and there's a handful of weird edge cases like Andrew Cunanan who are technically serial killers but often called spree killers. It is a mess. PARAKANYAA (talk) 05:32, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, Qwerfjkltalk 14:50, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • The fact that sources use the term does not mean a lot in a discussion about subjectivity. What matters is if sources agree on the meaning of the term. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:27, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Again, that also applies to the non fictional categories. If this cat is deleted all of the spree killer ones should also be merged to the mass killer categories, because these terms have an extremely marginal difference and are often used interchangeably. PARAKANYAA (talk) 13:32, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Merge now that I have also CfD'd the non-fictional spree killer categories. The distinction between mass and spree is too subjective and obscure to be defining. PARAKANYAA (talk) 21:16, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge as nominated: "Objective" does not mean "documented in reliable sources". HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 18:38, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: rename, these are categories by ethnicity, not for descendants of emigrants. I am not sure if "Burmese" in the name is absolutely necessary in all these cases, or whether it can simply be assumed without mentioning, but it does not hurt to mention it. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:07, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Rename per nom Omnis Scientia (talk) 15:34, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • There are currently 36 people listed in the category, so far as I can see, no women. Thus a move to include men's is sensible, and if there are enough notable women in the future, then women's category can be created separately. 36 men is enough to split by gender, and there was consensus at WT:FOOTY last year to split footballer categories by gender too. The result of the discussion was: merge to "YYYY in sports" (and "YYY0s in sports" for the decade categories) (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 17:02, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Until 1900
Nominator's rationale: These contain only "YYYY in horse racing", and are therefore redundant. (Category:1900 in equestrian is the first with more than one member, so I'm ending there, and it's also a natural boundary). If kept, speedy rename to "YYYY in equestrian sports" per Category:Equestrian sports * Pppery * it has begun... 01:38, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, redundant category layer with only one subcategory each - but shouldn't they be merged to their Sports parent? Marcocapelle (talk) 05:16, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Upmerge all to the appropriate Category:X in sports (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) parent categories. Joseph2302 (talk) 12:20, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Upmerge all per Joseph2302. –Aidan721 (talk) 14:48, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose I don't think these are necessarily redundant, just that the decade container category isn't appropriate here - perhaps an upmerge to 19th century in equestrian sports would be more appropriate? SportingFlyer T·C 21:34, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is precisely redundant. There two centuries of categories that contain horse racing categories. Upmerging is futile because of Category:19th century in horse racing. –Aidan721 (talk) 23:57, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Upmerge the individual year categories, but just delete the decade categories (as the YYYY in sports categories are already in the decade categories). HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 20:06, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Upmerging the decade categories just moves YYY0s in horse racing to YYY0s in sports. –Aidan721 (talk) 15:49, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: overlapping category. (I didn't want to do speedy, because these categories are newly created by a user who doesn't yet understand how categories work) Mason (talk) 01:06, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
