Nominator's rationale: Non-defining intersection between race, gender, and scientific field. WP:EGRS doesn't apply because the literature in this area uses chemistry etc as examples. (fwiw, I think that the parent intersection <African-American women scientists> meets the criteria for egrs as a meaningful intersection/substantial academic research etc) Mason (talk) 22:58, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: keep and nest under European people. (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 01:03, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: I would like some clarity on the nested category structure. Are people from the Republic of Geneva nested under Swiss people? I (and @Aciram:) interpret them as being nested, however, one other user @Sapphorain:, does not, and has removed Genevan people from Swiss categories (when there isn't a Geneva specific version), claiming that they are "incorrect"(see User_talk:Smasongarrison#Swiss_categories and Talk:Marie-Aimée_Lullin#Swiss_versus_Genevan_categories for recent examples. Mason (talk) 18:34, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, the point of the category is that Geneva was an independent city state, it did not belong to the Swiss Conferacy. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:14, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Marcocapelle, I also think it should be kept. Can you share your thoughts on the relationship between the categories? "Are people from the Republic of Geneva nested under Swiss people?" Mason (talk) 22:25, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • No, that is plain wrong, they should be under European. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:27, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, and nest under European people. Geneva was an independant city state for almost three hundred years, and did not join the Swiss Confederacy before 1815. Before that it was alternately under Savoy rule and Church rule, and at the very end under French rule. So I agree with Marcocapelle that it should not be nested under Swiss people, but under European people.
Swiss categories could however stay as parent categories, if deemed a convenient classification tool, but should not appear directly in the pages categories as this would convey false information, especially when a precise time indication is featured: a category of the type « 18th-century Swiss such-and-such » labelling a citizen of the Republic of Geneva conveys the false information that Geneva was in Switzerland in the eighteenth century, and this is unworthy of an encyclopedia.
The comparison often made with Italy in order to justify Swiss nesting doesn’t stand: Italy has been called « Italia » as a region for more than two thousand years; Tacitus calls it thus in his Historiae. There is no such old established name regarding Switzerland, which derives its name from the small Canton of Schwytz, and was not used to designate territories before they actually joined (or were invaded by...) the Swiss Cantons.--Sapphorain (talk) 22:10, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fictional characters by descent[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 18:13, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: delete in the spirit of WP:G4, see Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2020_April_11#Fictional_characters_by_descent. Formerly they were named e.g. Category:Fictional American people of Chinese descent etc. but that does not really change things. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:37, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@RevelationDirect, SpinnerLaserz, DexDor, Dimadick, Otr500, Carlossuarez46, and Soetermans: pinging contributors to previous discussion. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:49, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Since these have a different naming convention, the editor who recreated these would not have been aware of the prior consensus. But the onus here should really be on the creator to describe why these are different or how they comply with the editing guidelines, otherwise be deleted per WP:G4. - RevelationDirect (talk) 13:30, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete All These have the same combination of WP:OR, WP:OVERLAPCAT, and WP:OCEGRS as the last time. The reliable sources in Johnny Gat list the character as Asian American but the voice artist is Korean American so Wikipedia editors have made the determination the character is also Korean American. Samurai (Super Friends) is listed under both Japanese and Japanese American super hero categories (without evidence of emigration) but is really defined by being a fictional Samurai so I added him to Category:Fictional samurai. Chloe Frazer actually belongs in the category tree but, in addition to being described as of Indian ancestry, she is also "sexually forward" and a "reckless adventurer"; the ancestry is one line in the backstory among many and not defining. I'm not cherry picking articles here, those were the first three I clicked on. - RevelationDirect (talk) 13:46, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all Per RevelationDirect. Dubious confirmation of the characters' descents is a major issue, but even if they were all correct it would fall under WP:OCEGRS. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 15:50, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all: Per RevelationDirect that pretty much covers it all. -- Otr500 (talk) 04:27, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all. In addition to WP:G4, in most cases fictional characters are actually not defined by their ancestry as most have no fictional ancestry specified, with exceptions. They are, however, defined by ethnic stereotypes more often than real people, but that's not what these categories are for. Place Clichy (talk) 17:27, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Delete all per above discussion. Omnis Scientia (talk) 19:13, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Qwerfjkl, any reason you relisted this though? Genuinely curious because the consensus is unanimous. Omnis Scientia (talk) 19:16, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Omnis Scientia all categories must be tagged for a week before closure, to allow time for adequate discussion. As I noted in my relisting comment, one of the categories was untagged, so the discussion now needs to be open for another week. Qwerfjkltalk 20:00, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Qwerfjkl, ah, I see! Thank you, I didn't know that! Omnis Scientia (talk) 20:20, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all (pinged): Per RevelationDirect (WP:OR, WP:OVERLAPCAT, and WP:OCEGRS) and Place Clichy ("fictional characters are actually not defined by their ancestry"). Going too deep, as well as categories that aid in misrepresentation, hinders aid to navigation because of category clutter with unnecessary overcategorization. Wikipedia editors should not "have made the determination" for dual categorization (Johnny Gat) without sources. It is not only a misrepresentation but blatant group WP:original research. -- Otr500 (talk) 16:49, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 18:13, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Upmerge for now. There's only one page in here, which isn't helpful for navigation. (If kept, I think it should be renamed to 17th-century bishops of the Church of Greece to make it clearer that this isn't necessarily for greek nationals) Mason (talk) 14:25, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom. Also imho "Greek Orthodox" is an unnecessary category layer altogether. There is no church body named Greek Orthodox Church, there are just many Eastern Orthodox churches that use Greek language in their liturgy. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:28, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Video game characters by species and containerize. (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 18:11, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Classifying things as "non-human" fails WP:NONDEF. It's about what characters are not, rather than being about what they are. The subcategories are indeed defining, since they refer to what a character is. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 17:22, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Rename as Category:Video game characters by species, and purge any articles from the resulting container category. AHI-3000 (talk) 18:25, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I wouldn't really have an issue with this either as it would be made a pure container category. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 18:39, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
