Also Category:Mammals of Costa Rica
Category:Mammals of El Salvador
Category:Mammals of Guatemala
Category:Mammals of Honduras
Category:Mammals of Nicaragua
Category:Mammals of Panama
Nominator's rationale: That, for example, the Gray fox or Jaguarandi (which is currently in 25 geographical categories) is found in Panama is a non-defining characteristic of the species.  Note: There are list articles and categories such as Category:Endemic fauna of Honduras.  Example similar previous discussion: 2016. Nominator's rationale: It's been pretty much agreed upon that the Arthurian characters are just that, fictional characters, I don't see how it's helpful to categorize three articles of fictional characters by an equally fictional relationship. None of these characters are defined by being the children of this other fictional character. Arthur is best known as Arthur and the other characters simply as supporting characters in his stories. ★Trekker (talk) 21:00, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom. There is no need to merge, the articles are already in Category:Arthurian characters. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:42, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose They are mythological characters, and not fictional. Their hereditary rights to Uther's throne is a defining elemement of the Arthurian legends. Dimadick (talk) 11:25, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
They are fictional @Dimadick:. No historian today supports that there was ever a King Arthur. It's not like with the Iliad where its actually possible that some of those people may have existed. And even then, if they were real it's still a very small category. Dimadick I appreciate all the good work you do, but you need to stop making categories like these all the time.★Trekker (talk) 11:37, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: This category has been deleted by discussion twice before as basically redundant to Category:Films. See Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2018_January_30#Feature_films_by_country and Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2007_September_7#Category:Feature_films. Also all the subcategories listed should be deleted for same reason. Geraldo Perez (talk) 20:29, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support per above, added and tagged two more.--☾Loriendrew☽ (ring-ring) 23:49, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Redundant. Films are generally feature length anyway, plus films are always categorized into a lower level defining category such as Action, Sci-Fi, Drama, Romance etc. A generic category at the top level that also includes all feature films from certain years doesn't seem helpful as anything but a container category at best. Canterbury Tail talk 15:23, 18 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support still not defining as I said 13 years ago. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 00:22, 19 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. The vast majority of all films that are notable enough for us to have articles about at all are going to be feature films by definition, so "feature" status is not a useful point of categorization — while short films do also exist, they generally don't get detailed or substantial critical reviews or media coverage, so their only real path to actually passing WP:NFILM almost always depends on the award criterion, and thus exponentially fewer short films are actually notable at all. The exceptions that are notable already have a Category:Short films category for them, but it doesn't need to be paralleled by a "feature" sibling to encompass literally every single film that isn't a short. Nominator's rationale: The only content is Category:West German defectors to East Germany Rathfelder (talk) 19:47, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment -- There ought also to be a category for those who went the other way, which ought also to be in this. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:24, 19 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • There were a lot more who went from East to West, but none of them are categorised as such. Arguably it was less defining, at least for those who survived.Rathfelder (talk) 22:25, 19 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. MER-C 09:48, 25 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Articles such as Acra, New York and Delta Reservoir are about places, not about names. We don't generally categorize things by characteristics of their names - especially when the articles don't mention that characteristic.  Example similar CFD: Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2012_November_29#Category:Place_names_of_Hampshire_origin_in_the_United_States. DexDor (talk) 16:53, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
New York State is a special case because a Classicist (Robert Harpur) was also a surveyor and was able to apply Classical names to newly-named places, in the Central New York region in which he was working. There are two books on these New York names ([[1]]). There is nothing similar in any other state. But it would be absurd to mention this in all the articles on the individual towns, although the category at the bottom provides information to the reader. That's the advantage of categories over lists. deisenbe (talk) 23:08, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The purpose of categories is to make navigation easier between articles. If a reader was interested in the place names, having this quick link between, say, Babylon, New York and Sodom, New York wouldn't help them understand the place names. A list article explaining Robert Harpurs influence would. RevelationDirect (talk) 01:10, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete We could categorize everwhere in the US by places named after places in the old country, places roughly named after Native American phrases, places named after geographic features, places named by French fur trappers or Spanish missionaries, etc. Lists that explain the place name etymology are helpful. Placing Goshen, New York under the Category:Christian Bible tree doesn't aid navigation and is non-defining because it's WP:SHAREDNAME. RevelationDirect (talk) 01:06, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, this is not a defining characteristic. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:53, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment RevelationDirect: to my knowledge, and I've looked, there are no other books on the characteristics of place names in one state only.

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge. bibliomaniac15 18:17, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: We already have Category:Yazidi villages in Turkey and all Yazidi populated places in Turkey are indeed villages. So no need for this. Semsûrî (talk) 12:57, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I would suggest instead that the Yazidi populated places categories and Yazidi villages categories be brought into line with the other Category:Communities by ethnic group, and moved to a single Yazidi communities category per country. Or at the very least get rid of the Yazidi villages categories instead as Category:Yazidi populated places is the parent category of all of them. Mugsalot (talk) 19:08, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge and leave the discussion about the exact name to a bundled nomination for all categories containing ethnic populated places in the Middle East. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:58, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete categorizing places by who lives there is often problematic akin to temporary categories. Also, must a place be 100% Yazidi for inclusion? Carlossuarez46 (talk) 00:26, 19 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge or reverse merge. They are very probably Yazidi majority populated, and probably have been longer than Utah has been populated by Later Day Saints or even America by people of European descent. Unlike America, Europe and Middle East are not melting pots. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:28, 19 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Carlossuarez46 and Peterkingiron: In this specific case, most Yazidis have left Turkey for Europe so we are talking about historical Yazidi villages. --Semsûrî (talk) 19:19, 19 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This is no less defining. Wikipedia takes history into account. Place Clichy (talk) 00:56, 20 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge to Category:Yazidi villages in Turkey (or reverse merge). Ethnoreligious communities have shaped places in the Middle East at least since Ottoman times, and this character (when sourced) is defining. However there is no need for a duplicate. The result of the discussion was: no consensus. bibliomaniac15 19:34, 27 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: add links in main article, add main article to all parent categories, add Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Istanbul to Category:Catholicism in Georgia (country), then delete category per WP:SMALLCAT, only four articles, and the category is an odd mix of a topic category (two articles) and a set of biographies (two articles). Marcocapelle (talk) 08:16, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Alter per nom, then delete -- This seems to be a small denomination, which does not merit multiple categories. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:31, 19 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. Eastern Catholicism, albeit small in numbers, is a topic of encyclopedic worth. There is distinct history for the Georgian community, as shown in main article Georgian Byzantine-Rite Catholics. Following this April 2020 discussion, all related categories have been merged into this single one, which is named after the article. There are therefore no longer multiple categories on this topic. The fact that this community was seemingly more active in Istanbul than in Georgia, as explained in articles Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Istanbul and Peter Kharischirashvili, tells us that Category:Catholicism in Georgia (country) would be a bad place for this content. Place Clichy (talk) 00:56, 20 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support There's a difference between "small in numbers" and "defunct", which this church, if it ever truly existed, currently is. The proposal saves all worthy material while removing categorical clutter. Laurel Lodged (talk) 10:25, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Speedy rename per nom and also, when will we have the rename button on the categories? SpinnerLaserz (talk) 08:13, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename per nom The current title is misleading. Dimadick (talk) 14:47, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename. bibliomaniac15 18:12, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: I am uncertain whether this category should be renamed or upmerged. The current name is inconsistent with Category:Transgender and transsexual people and its other subcategories. Category:LGBT people by religion does not contain any other sub-categorisations within LGBT (e.g., there is no Category:Lesbian Muslims or Category:Bisexual Christians). To avoid overcategorisation, it might be better to upmerge to the parent categories Category:LGBT Jews and (carefully, where not already in a child category) Category:Transgender and transsexual people. Cheers, gnu57 04:14, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge (or else rename), per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:42, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Definitely Rename/Neutral on Merge We should definitely rename this to fit the convention. I'll defer to other editors whether there is something about this intersection that warrants a more specific subcategory than with other religions. RevelationDirect (talk) 00:57, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete do transgender Jews differ from transgender Gentiles? We don't have articles Transgender Jews (a redirect to List of LGBT Jews) or Transsexual Jews, and per WP:OCEGRS ("If a substantial and encyclopedic head article (not just a list) cannot be written for such a category, then the category should not be created.") we ought not have a category. The result of the discussion was: Merge/rename as proposed; revisit if necessary Discussion has deadlocked and gone quiet for weeks. The wider category tree is Category:Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic and is almost completely at the long form so any proposal to use the acronym is probably best brought in a separate nomination. Nominator's rationale: Per WP:OVERLAPCAT, and the fact that the country existed as the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic from 1940 until 1991. — 1857a (talk) 00:30, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. MER-C 09:48, 25 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:NONDEFINING (WP:OVERLAPCAT and WP:OCAWARD)
The Paralympic Hall of Fame celebrates the earlier success of athletes at the Paralympic Games. Without exception, all of these articles are already in that category tree in more specific country, sport, year, and, usually, medal subcategories that better aid navigation. The articles are a mix of ones that mention the award in passing, that don't mention it at all, or that mention it in the lede, but that last group is almost entirely due to a single enthusiastic editor so this award doesn't seem defining. The contents of the category are already listified here in the main article for any reader interested in the topic. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:07, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge. bibliomaniac15 18:21, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:NONDEFINING (WP:OVERLAPCAT, WP:OCAWARD)
The International Rugby Hall of Fame was a New Zealand award for rugby union players that existed from 1997 to 2007. In 2014, the International Rugby Board Hall of Fame changed it's name to the World Rugby Hall of Fame and automatically inducted all of these earlier winners. (Got all that?) We generally keep separate alumni subcategories for merged schools—example—but in this case I don't think the distinction is defining and it's better to handle this in lists rather than have multiple award categories/subcategories. The contents of the category are already listified here in the main article for any reader interested in this former award. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:07, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Merge per nominator. This is just duplication. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:05, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Certainly merge but do we really need either? We have consistently deleted halls of fame, unless there is a physical museum. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:39, 19 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
