Local politicians in Australia[edit]

The result of the discussion was: rename. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 09:25, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: To clearly distinguish politicians in local government from state and federal. See the archived discussion at Wikipedia:Australian Wikipedians' notice board/Archive 61#Local politicians, which gave examples for Australian usage of "local politician" for state/federal. The nominated categories currently contain only subcats for councillors and mayors. – Fayenatic London 22:55, 17 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Pinging contributors to that discussion Mitch Ames, Wakelamp, WWGB.
  • Note: since that discussion some cleanup has taken place, but without full attention to detail, e.g. Henry Kenny (Australian politician) and Alexander Robert Richardson have been sub-catted incorrectly as councillor and mayor respectively by Steelkamp (talk · contribs) but were state politicians – they were already correctly in Category:Members of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly / Category:Members of the Western Australian Legislative Council, and should have been removed from the local politician hierarchy. So further cleanup of the sub-cats is required; but that does not detract from this nomination, since the sub-cats themselves do belong in "local government politicians". – Fayenatic London 22:55, 17 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    Support. Looks good, Wakelamp d[@-@]b (talk) 23:40, 17 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Fayenatic london: That is not correct. Alexander Robert Richardson was the chairman of the Northern Road Board (is that a misspelling of Northam?) and Henry Kenny (Australian politician) was on the Geraldton Town Council. For all the recategorisations I did, I checked to see that they were actually on local government councils/boards/etc.
What confuses me is why is Category:Mayors of places in Western Australia not a subcategory of Category:Western Australian local councillors. We're now in this weird situation where mayors and shire presidents and chairmen, who are also local councillors, are not in the local councillors category. I also want to know why it is necessary for Category:Western Australian local government politicians to be a separate category from Category:Western Australian local councillors. The same applies to all the states, which seem to have this strange hierarchy which separates mayors from local councillors, even though mayors should be a subcategory of local councillors. Steelkamp (talk) 02:12, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Alexander Robert Richardson was the chairman of the Northern Road Board ... and Henry Kenny (Australian politician) was on the Geraldton Town Council. — In that case the articles should be updated to say so, per WP:CATV, "It should be clear from verifiable information in the article why it was placed in each of its categories." Mitch Ames (talk) 03:23, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
mayors and shire presidents and chairmen, who are also local councillors, are not in the local councillors category — I don't think mayors are actually councillors. The mayor is elected separately from the council. You can run for both, but "the mayoral or presidential election is decided first. If the candidate is successful in the mayoral or presidential election, the candidate’s votes are not counted for the councillor election."[1] My LGA has "one Mayor and 12 Councillors" (total 13),[2] not "13 Councillors including Mayor". Mitch Ames (talk) 03:43, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
In WA at least, according to the Local Government Act 1995[3] it appears that a mayor or president may or may not be a councillor (clause 2.8(2)). If elected by electors, the mayor or president is not a councillor (2.17(1)), if elected by council, the mayor or president is a councillor (2.17(2)(a)).
Thus a mayor or president is not necessarily a councillor, and the category tree apparently correct. Mitch Ames (talk) 04:06, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Historically, the mayor/shire president/chairman has been elected from among the councillors by the councillors. This is still the case in a minority of local governments, and in that case, the mayor/shire president/chairman is clearly a councillor as well. Then there is the case of mayors who were councillors before becoming mayor, which is quite common. In the current situation, there are no mayors/presidents/chairmen in the councillors category which is surely wrong. I think mayors who were elected from the council and mayors who were previously councillors should be added to the councillors category. Steelkamp (talk) 04:13, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed - people can be in both "mayor" and "councillor" category if the former is not a sub-cat of the latter. Mitch Ames (talk) 08:20, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Mitch Ames (talk) 02:01, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Steelkamp may well have a point. The situation is not the same in every country. The separation of councillors and mayors makes perfect sense in countries where mayors are outsiders who are appointed rather than elected. But if, as in Australia, local people may have been both in different periods of their lives, the distinction between mayors and councillors becomes blurry and the mayors and councillors category trees may well be merged to local politicians. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:44, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
mayors and councillors category trees may well be merged to local politicians — Given this CfD proposal, I hope you mean "merge to local government politicians". But I think merging or changing the tree structure (whether "mayor" is subcat of "councillors") is orthogonal to the name of the cats "local politicians" vs "local government politicians". Mitch Ames (talk) 08:29, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes, I meant local government politicians. In that respect I support the proposal. Marcocapelle (talk) 10:14, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    • Even as a draft article, it doesn't look that notable. I'll AGF and assume that the article's writer isn't connected with Boyer or Perspective PAC, but it does look a little fishy. Grutness...wha? 14:51, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
