Nominator's rationale: unnecessary category that does not fit the standard naming convention seen in every other category in Category:College sports coaches in the United States; see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 January 22#Category:California Golden Bears women's basketball head coaches Joeykai (talk) 22:36, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Evangel Christian Academy alumni. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 15:04, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This appears to be the only Category on Wikipedia for student-athletes at a specific high school. All of the pages in this category should just be moved to Category:Evangel Christian Academy alumni. Even if we were to start making categories for high school student-athletes by school (which we obviously shouldn't), this isn't formatted correctly. It should follow the format in Category:College athletes in the United States by team, which is Category:[School] [Mascot] athletes. So it would be Evangel Christian Eagles athletes, not "Evangel Christian Academy players." Dennis C. Abrams (talk) 21:12, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: keep. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 15:04, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT. Manually merge Anime Matsuri into Category:Conventions in Texas as well. –Aidan721 (talk) 17:28, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep as there is a "realistic potential for growth" and thus SMALLCAT does not apply.--User:Namiba 04:25, 3 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment – There has been 3 conventions in the past 100 years. Are we really going to keep this category because another page might get created in 30 years? Sure there's potential for growth, but it's not realistic in the next few years. Seems foolish to allow this to be an example of "realistic potential for growth". –Aidan721 (talk) 15:41, 3 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I just added 4 from Category:Conventions in Texas. Houston is one of the largest cities in the entire country, which is why it had a very realistic potential for growth.--User:Namiba 03:29, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom. 3 conventions in 100 years isn't realistic potential for growth. Kbdank71 18:17, 3 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep as it currently has 7 articles. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:55, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per Namiba. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 04:08, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT. Dual merge not needed as both pages are in Category:Political conventions in South Carolina. –Aidan721 (talk) 17:25, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: New nonsensical category including disparate things such as sex comedies, "adult animated films", and Adult Swim. —Alalch E. 14:41, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Adult comedy films[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: manual merge & delete. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 15:06, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This category only applies to certain Tamil and Telugu sex comedies. Such films from outside these cinematographies are not described as "adult comedy flms". It's also a euphemism. —Alalch E. 14:39, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom. Most films are aimed principally at adults, meaning that in the broadest sense this would be a massively unmaintainable category inclusive of a sizable majority of all comedy films that exist at all — but that's not what people actually mean when they single out "adult" as a film "genre", and instead that label is used as a euphemism for the much narrower set of films about sex, and in that more restrictive sense this just duplicates Category:Sex comedy films unnecessarily. However, as almost all of the films that have actually been filed here are Indian films, they should go into the subcategory for Category:Indian sex comedy films rather than the international parent — and while a random spotcheck did turn up at least one film that was a US-UK-France copro rather than an Indian film, it similarly should be (and already is) subcatted as an American, British and French sex comedy film. So I'd recommend a cautious manual upmerge here: it should simply be removed from any film that's already in an "[Appropriate country] sex comedy films" category, and replaced with "[Appropriate country] sex comedy films" in any film that isn't. Bearcat (talk) 16:03, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Note: Added Category:Adult comedy which will be emptied after Adult comedy films is merged. It is also a euphemistic category. —Alalch E. 23:22, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom and bearcat. As my comment in the above nomination points out, Adult films redirects to Pornographic film. Kbdank71 18:34, 3 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • If merged, it should definitely be a manual merge, diffusing among the subcategories by country (per nom). Marcocapelle (talk) 17:27, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Manual Merge and delete

The result of the discussion was: rename to "Heritage New Zealand". (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 15:13, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:C2D match parent Category:Heritage New Zealand, remove register, do not add "list" which has a specific meaning in categories.
speedy discussion
Nominator's rationale: WP:CATNAME: Do not write the category structure in names. While WP:SMALLCAT (1, 1, 2 respectively), these are able to grow.

  • Agreed. As noted for the other nomination on this page, WP:CATNAME: Do not write the category structure in names. So these would begin with "Historic areas". Fixed.
    William Allen Simpson (talk) 06:52, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • Oppose changed proposal without Heritage New Zealand in the category names. IMHO, this is a misinterpretation of WP:CATNAME. Without the "Heritage New Zealand" prefix, the scope of the category has suddenly become much wider, as it would include any areas considered historic by anybody, not just those designated by Heritage New Zealand, which is the intended scope. Paora (talk) 08:32, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe, but that's not our standard. We won't make fine distinctions between a parent and some other organization that designates historic areas. Categories are for navigation, not attribute tags.
      William Allen Simpson (talk) 09:02, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, it is our standard. WP:CATNAME is clear: Choose category names that can stand alone, independent of the way a category is connected to other categories. If we do as you suggest, then the sub-category will be broader than the parent category, so the categorisation becomes a nonsense. It should not be necessary to have to refer to the parent category to understand the scope of a given category, and the criterion that I have quoted above makes this clear. You have referred to the criterion Do not write the category structure in names, but if you continue reading you will see the example given is quite different from the situation here. Paora (talk) 09:16, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Subcategories with multiple parents will always be broader than only one parent. If and only if there are other local schemes for categorization, we'll be keeping them in the same category. The name should be as inclusive as possible. This is not an extended attribute tagging system from social media. This is for navigation.

The result of the discussion was: upmerge. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 15:18, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Redundant Mvcg66b3r (talk) 05:26, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Upmerge as nominated. It seems that almost all 171 articles are already in the parent. Innovate Corp. is in both, and is main article for the parent. So don't remove common articles from the parent. This is easy post merger cleanup.
